Great news, if true. Maybe fewer people will abandon or starve their horses with the slaughterhouse option reopened.
I’m not interested in horse meat, but I think it’s absurd that the government tries to tell us what we cannot eat.
If I want to eat my dog, I should be able to.
Disgusting, but freedom isn’t always pretty.
During World War II and the postwar years, when beef and pork were scarce or priced beyond most consumers means, horsemeat appeared in the butchers cold case. In 1951, Time magazine reported from Portland, Ore.: Horsemeat, hitherto eaten as a stunt or only as a last resort, was becoming an important item on Portland tables. Now there were three times as many horse butchers, selling three times as much meat. Noting that people who used to pretend it was for the dog now came right out and said it was going on the table, the article provided tips for cooking pot roast of horse and equine fillets.
A similar situation unfolded in 1973, when inflation sent the cost of traditional meats soaring. Time reported that Carlsons, a butcher shop in Westbrook, Conn., that recently converted to horsemeat exclusively, now sells about 6,000 pounds of the stuff a day. The shop was evangelical in its promotion of horse as a main course, producing a 28-page guide called Carlsons Horsemeat Cook Book, with recipes for chili con carne, German meatballs, beery horsemeat and more. While no longer in print, the book is catalogued on Amazon.
So, this is a sign that the economy is getting worse.
How many neigh votes were there?
I’m thinking tough meat and bland flavor.
I never realized it was illegal to eat horses. I just thought people didn’t do it because horse meat wasn’t any good compared to other much tastier options. Of course that is also why even if legal most people won’t eat horse.
Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat cake"
Obama: "Let them eat dog food"
Yes, it seems most posters don’t know what a cruel thing the Animal Rights Nazi’s had forced into law. Their laws have caused great suffering for horses.
This is one of the few humane things Obama has done. Good for him.
Unless it's processed, packaged, and distributed for use, it's a wasted resource which gets cleaned up by maggots.
Ew.
I’ve had it in restaurants in northern Japan.
To me, eating horses is like eating dogs and cats. It’s just wrong. I don’t know why he did this.
"I slaughtered this horse last Tuesday. I think it's startin' to turn. "
