Obama Legalizes Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption
Technocrati ^ | 11-28-11

Horse slaughter plants are legal again in the United States. Restrictions on horse meat processing for human consumption have been lifted.

In a bipartisan effort, the House of Representatives and the United States Senate approved the Conference Committee report on spending bill H2112, which among other things, funds the United States Department of Agriculture. On November 18th, as the country was celebrating Thanksgiving, President Obama signed a law, allowing Americans to kill and eat horses. Essentially, one turkey was pardoned in the presence of worldwide media while in the shadows, buried under pages of fiscal regulation, millions of horses were sentenced to death.

Horse slaughter has been prohibited in the United States as funding for inspections of horses in transit and at slaughter houses was non-existent. This worked because the horse meat cannot be sold for human consumption without such inspections. The House version of the bill retained the de-funding language and the Senate version did not. The conference committee charged with reconciling the two opted to not include it. The result is that it is now legal to slaughter horses for humans to eat.

Notwithstanding that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter, that President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption (horses can be sent to Mexico and Canada), that documentation of animal cruelty, slaughterhouse stench, fluid runoff and negative community impact exists, it is taxpayers that will bear the costs!

Wyoming state representative Sue Wallis and her pro-slaughter group estimate that between 120,000 and 200,000 horses will be killed for human consumption per year and that Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Georgia and Missouri, are considering opening slaughter plants.

During these trying times, is the only thing that Democrats and Republicans can agree on is that Americans need to eat horses?

This is horrible as the reliable sources I have read show there is no such thing as humane horse slaughter.

BAck during the bogus ‘beef shortage’ of the 70s, it was for sale in the supermarket in Las Vegas.

Very low fat, and tasty.

Mule isn’t so good.

Took a pass on dog while in the ROK...

Plus, some kind of disease or the other. Not enough people here to kill them all. That took thousands of years. Now we can kill anything!

I’ll take one of those with a pile of fried potatoes and onions and large, cold glass of raw milk.

We keep sending rice to the NORK military to feed the prison guards that oversee prison camps where several thousand children are butchered and eaten every year.

Horse meat has been part of human gastronomy going back to the original untamed horses in central Asia highlands.

IN the continental United States, no area of wilderness is more than 18 miles from a road. There is no longer a wilderness for the pretty horses to run wild, and the BLS has been fighting to maintain healthy mustang populations through culling programs for years, and the situation is untenable at current. Saving the mustangs by not culling destroyed the ENTIRE ecosystem, the horse herds ate every piece of vegetation and created desertification in under 20 years in some areas.

As mentioned in an above post in the NYC area there are so many deer due to idiotic anti-hunting regulations that over 30 species of native ground nesting birds no longer exist here, as well as many many other species of flora and fauna. And the prior NJ DEP head is the Obama EPA head, and Lisa P Jackson is an anti-hunting zealot...

The watermelon and emotive enviros can not properly form conservation policy, as they have proven over and over again in the prior four decades. Hopefully Congress will stop whoring themselves out to insane PR campaigns by enviro-idiots in the future.

I own a very nice horse leather holster for my Glock 19, a Galco Skyops. Horses ARE killed for human consumption in the USA. Not something I particularly want to eat, BUT again, we will be using more of the carcass.

Yes, this is good for the horses. It restores a monetary value to older horses that no longer earn their keep, and will encourage owners to sell them rather than neglect them to die from poor nutrition and declining health.

As mentioned above, far too many horses have been dumped onto public lands by their economically challenged owners. When turned loose, the horses usually die a horrible death within 18 months.

As to which is smarter, the horse or cow, hands down the cow! Horses are really stupid, but mules are a whole nother story. Mules are often smarter than their riders!

Good.

Better that they are sold for legal slaughter than what is happening now which is people are dumping them.

People can take dogs or cats to shelters. Cows and pigs can be sold for slaughter but what the heck do you do with a unwanted horse, donkey or mule?

Not that I think any states would endorse eating bikers.

No probably not. . .especially those; like our Prez; who, according to all vacation pics; prefers to ride a girls bike. . .

Difficult, actually, to imagine Obama on a 'real' man's bike; much less a motor cycle...No, the 'girl's bike'does work. . .but is low on appetite scale.

Millions of "play horses" in this country.

No forage, no feed due to drought.

Cheap-a$$ grass hay that was $4 a bale last year, now $12.

Can't feed 'em, can't sell 'em. The only thing some people can do is to turn them out or shoot them and let them rot where they fall.

The ones that get turned out often wind up coming through a windshield.

This may be the only thing Obama and his bunch have done with which I can agree.

Horse has a finer grain, is more tender and a touch sweet.

Bison is coarser, can be tough and has a richer flavor than beef.

I like ‘em all.
