~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee

Arnold Air Force Base (ICAO: KAYX, FAA LID: AYX) is a United States Air Force base located in Coffee and Franklin counties, Tennessee, adjacent to the city of Tullahoma. It is named for General Henry "Hap" Arnold, the father of the U.S. Air Force.

The base is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), the most advanced and largest complex of flight simulation test facilities in the world. The center operates 58 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units. AEDC is an Air Force Materiel Command organization.

Twenty-seven of the Arnold Engineering Development Center's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; 14 are unique in the world.  Facilities can simulate flight conditions from sea level to 300 miles and from subsonic velocities to Mach 20.

The AEDC is an Air Force Materiel Command facility and an important national resource.  It has contributed to the development of practically every one of the nation's top priority aerospace programs including the Atlas, Titan, Minuteman and Peacekeeper ICBMs, the space shuttle, space station, and Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

The von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility has three continuous-flow units, Tunnels A, B and C. The tunnels are used extensively to obtain large aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic databases that are used to develop supersonic and hypersonic flight vehicles. Virtually every high-speed flight vehicle has required testing in Tunnels A/B/C, from reentry and tactical vehicles and space capsules, to the X-planes and winged vehicles.

The Aeropropulsion Systems Test Facility at the Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Center, located at the Arnold Air Force Base in southern Middle Tennessee, is a unique national facility designed to test aircraft propulsion systems in true mission environments without leaving the ground.

ASTF provides the United States with the unique test capability of simulating flight conditions at altitudes up to 75,000 feet, at speeds up to Mach 2.3, for engines rated up to 100,000 pounds of thrust.

Situated in a picturesque campus-style setting adjacent to the Tullahoma, Tennessee Regional Airport is the Beechcraft Heritage Museum.

An attractive blend of authentically restored early American log structures and modern museum-quality construction, this 60,000 square foot facility currently houses more that two-dozen aircraft, plus many aviation artifacts and memorabilia for the enjoyment of Members and visitors.

Honoring Your Parents

November 29, 2011

My dad recently turned 90 years old and his physical capabilities are fading. He can still move around with his walker, but he needs someone to cook his meals and help him with other tasks.

My older brother Steve and his wife Judy lived close to him, so they decided to move in with Dad to care for him. Wanting to help in some way, my wife and I flew across the country to help out a bit by watching Dad while my brother and his wife had some time away together. We enjoyed our time with my father and were glad to ease Steve and Judy’s load—even if it was only for a few days.

The Bible says to “honor your father and mother” (Eph. 6:2). One New Testament commentary says that to honor someone is to “treat him with the deference, respect, reverence, kindness, courtesy, and obedience which his station in life . . . demands.”

For young children, this means obeying parents. For teenagers, it indicates showing respect for Mom and Dad even if you think you know more than they do. For young adults, this means including your parents in your life. And for those in middle-age and beyond, it means making sure that parents are cared for as they move into old age or their health declines.

How can you honor your parents this week?

Don’t miss the opportunity
To honor and obey
The parents God has given you—
For they’ll be gone someday. —Sper

Honoring our parents has no age limit.

Read: Exodus 20:1-17

Honor your father and mother. —Ephesians 6:2
Bible in a year:
Ezekiel 35-36; 2 Peter 1
