LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

Let’s get real fellow conservatives. The stakes are far too high to allow the reelection of Hussein. In a few short months we are going to nominate a Republican for President. He or she won’t be perfect but we MUST support any of these fine candidates! Here’s how I handicap the candidates
1. Bachman - the truest conservastive. Little shrill probably difficult to elect. I would vote for her
2. Mitt - Establishment flip flopper. I would hold breath and reluctantly vote for him
3. Newt. What a firecracker! I would vote for him because he could make O look like a fool with his teleprompter
4. Santorum - similiar to Bachman. needs a little charisma. definitely would support
5. Ron Paul. look out for aliens
6. Huntsman - makes Mitt look palatable
7. Cain. dropped a few notches, not because of lies, but response

Well, we got one.

Please get real. The GOP is doing fine. That was no disaster they suffered in 2008.

We are shutting down our 13th Planned Parenthood in Texas since Perry defunded it.

We keep forgetting this important fact. Perry also saw the necessity of reigning in the out-of-control lawsuits which has helped create a favorable business climate in TX.

Perry is the only one running who has a record of accomplishment on which to run.

Yes I forgot and his plan for DC will actually cause a dramatic change and shift in power from DC to the states and therefore the people.

America doesn't need a fundamental change, it needs to get back to the fundamentals.

It is inappropriate to say that Clinton schooled Gingrich. I’d be more inclined to say that Peter Jennings did.

Newt gave them the ammunition. I remember Newt complaining about being on the back of the airplane, while Clinton was in the front, when they went somewhere. The press played it up like he was a spoiled brat. I understood what Newt meant, he didn't want to waste time getting to a resolution of the shut down. He should have said it's up to the POTUS timetable to resolve the impass.

If nominating John McCain and then electing obama doesn't qualify as a disaster what in the name of all that's holy would?

You think Romney would be a better president than Gingrich or a better opponent to Obama?

I think Romney loses to obama. Rasmussen ran a poll not to long ago that 15% of Pubs will definitely not vote for him and another 17% said they were not likely to vote for him against obama. Romney may pick up some northeast liberals, but he loses the energetic vocal support of the base.

Any one of them will do better than Obama; but Conservatives need to beat Romney. There are 2 ways this can happen. Forget Paul and Huntsman. Cain, Santorum and Bachmann are the strongest Conservatives but I don't see Santorum or Bachmann being contenders (but who knows at this point). Cain is losing ground but MAY have a chance. Newt is a distant 4th as a Conservative, but is still more Conservative than RINO; and is the quickest whit of the nominees. So as of right now it's either Cain or Newt; but one of these has to beat Romney.

But is it too late? Have the media and trolls killed his chances? I know it was an all-out blitz to portray him as an idiot and none of them are talking about how he’s hung in there and fought back.

I hope he’s still in. Much preferable to Newt.

World class denial is thinking that #1, Newtie is on the side of Conservatives and #2, that he’d ever be able to win a Presidential race in a general election. Not just denial, but epic delusion.

You and I are on the same page with Zippo.

I don't have a doubt in my mind Zippo’s going to be forced out and it will be blamed on “Rich White Wall Street” and the left will get the race war as a path to power they have had wet dreams about for over 40 years.

Hillary intends to get in the WH regardless of how many people get killed and how many cities burn to the ground.

World class denial is thinking that Herman Cain doesn't have a woman problem. Cain's done. If you care about nominating a conservative to face obama next year you need to get over YOUR denial.

Romney is the Dems’ pick for the Rep candidate. Mainly because they know Obama will cream him in the election with the help from the News Media.

Maybe. But how does that make him different from other candidates? Does Cain or Perry or Gingrich or Bachmann really stand a better chance?

Wm, that was all media.

An associate of Newt at the time wrote:

***And Gingrich’s alleged complaint about the airplane landing was taken out of context. He pointed out that Clinton had avoided the GOP leadership on board for the 20-plus hours of the flight. Budget negotiations could have been taking place. Then the president simply lacked manners in shunting the Republicans out the back of the plane.***

So, the media ran with a caricature...are you surprised?

I am so sick of this, any of them can win if 51% of the people vote for them. Its that simple. If they can elect Clinton and Obama we can elect any republican in the current crop. Anyone saying this person can never win is not seeing history.

"Romney requires a vote for a third party.....This would give the Presidency to OBAMA. Is that what you really want?'

I don't want a democrat in office. So I am NOT going to vote for ROMNEY who is a democrat no matter what he calls himself.

If a democrat is going to be in office, it's better that the Democrats own it. If Romney is elected, we will have a democrat in office, but the Republicans will own it. Is THAT what YOU want?!!

Romney can't win the nomination anyway because the South is going to hand him a massive defeat again. No matter how much the MSM push Romney on us. He needs to drop out now so that the field is less cluttered.

And I suppose Mittens Romney would be just peachy as a nomination... My thoughts exactly... first Bachmann would be a disaster, then Perry, then Cain and now Newt. Truth is that Romney would be the biggest disaster. I could see any supporter of the mentioned vote for another name. I can't say that about Romney. If he gets the nod I believe many will not vote or go third party.

Actually third party may not be so bad. How about Trump/Palin; or Palin/Trump; or Palin/and the Jr. Senator from South Carolina.

I won't vote for Romney. I don't expect zero to be the Democrat nominee.

Newt isn’t my first, second, third, or fourth choice, but if he is all conservative Republicans can offer up besides Romney, I’ll vote for him. I’ll vote for anyone besides Obama.
