Arizona-New Mexico project aims to learn more about imperiled cats Camera network will focus on jaguars

Starting next year, jaguars will be the target of an extensive network of remote cameras placed across Southern Arizona and southwest New Mexico.

In a three-year, $771,000 project that has been greeted warmly by environmentalists but warily by cattle growers, University of Arizona researchers will try to learn more about the status and presence of the endangered animal.

Yes indeed.

The E-type is very rare, and quite beautiful.

My guess is that lots of hunters in those states will wind up with lots of new ‘trailcams’.

Why isn’t U.S. Fish & Wildlife financing this? Anybody think this will lead to more excuses not to secure the border (Border Patrol traffic, etc. will disrupt the jaguar)?

>>Why isn’t U.S. Fish & Wildlife financing this? <<

Because Fish & Wildlife didn’t have all those unused cameras and resources laying around.
I strongly support a healthy Jaguar population. If plentiful enough they might aid is securing the border and they don’t suck up wages or pensions. What’s worse, loose a few head of cattle to a Jaguar or your ranch to the drug trade?
You can bet the Government will quit this when they find out Jaguars don’t vote democrat.

It already has. I read this story the other day on some dot.com news and, yes, there was already some "talk" that a secure border fence "might" disrupt the peregrinations of jaguars.

As for me, I'm thrilled by this recent jaguar sigting in SE Arizona. I think the last one was in the late 90s in the Peloncillo Mountains on the New Mexico/ Arizona border, so there ARE jaguars down there.

As for the "traffic" of big cats (or Sonoran pronghorn) across the border, the situation can be easily resolved by having strategically placed open areas along the border without a physical fence. But at those points without a physical fence, HAVE THE AREA MANNED BY BORDER PATROL AGENTS! This would let wildlife through, and keep human smugglers/illegal aliens out.

This idea is not new -- it's been discussed before -- but the Left won't sign onto it, despite their "concerns" for wildlife.

To call these leftist environmentalists a bunch of filthy hypocrites is to dishonor the phrase "filthy hypocrite."

And by the way, where was my ping, girlangler?????

LOL!

Why does each government project worth, say, $75,000 cost close to a $ million???

My previous town in RI resurfaced six high school tennis courts, and put up new fencing for a total bill of $700,000. That was after irrigating the middle school soccer pitch for $450,000.

It’s been so long since I posted anything. I knew I was missing someone, but how could I have missed one of my favorite freepers?

I am in New Mexico now until March. Going to Bosque Del Apache this week to see all the migrating birds, including Sandhill Cranes.

Freepmail me and let me know how you are doing. I’m freelancing for some newspapers.

Yes, I too am thrilled about the jaguars. I’m not too far from the Gila National Forest.

This story is one to watch.

It’s fun watching birds. My boyfriend is somewhat of a bird expert. He is getting me into it now. Glad to hear we have one more thing in common Jaz.

Be careful and have fun Flycatcher.
