Syracuse (CNN/WSYR-TV) - Bobby Davis, an alleged molestation victim of Bernie Fine, recorded a phone call with the coach's wife in 2002, according to ESPN. (Full story)
The tape, aired by the network on Sunday, indicates Laurie Fine may have been aware of her husband's alleged inappropriate actions.
ESPN's Mark Schwarz explained in an interview on CNN why the tapes were not made public back then.
We did not go to authorities with the tape. The authorities did speak to Bobby Davis before the tape was made in 2002. He spoke to a Syracuse Police detective, who he says spent five minutes on the phone with him, and didn't even do a detective report... told him the statute of limitations had come and gone, and that is why Bobby Davis says he recorded the tape to try to at least corroborate his story this way.

more “homosexuals behaving badly.”
I hate the word “inappropriate.” Call it what it is-—child rape.
From what I have seen, the media is almost always complicit in these cases. They only get all moral when they decide they want to destroy someone.
At age 27, this guy is still hanging around with the old perv? Asking him for money? ewwwwwwwww
The story is poorly written, but I read it the same way you did. It sounds like ESPN sat on the tape for 9 years for whatever reason. The sports media likes Cinderella stories. Not icky boy-rape stories. Sports make $$$$$. The media counts the cost to determine what stories are worthy of publishing and what stories are not. Boy-rape stories are not worth it.
“Poorly written” is an understatement. It “explains” nothing.
I read this thing twice and can’t make anything out of it. Did the tapes just turn up? Obviously the writers first language isn’t English.
The same as Penn State and Paterno and Spanier.
I have been dealing with this homo rape problem for boys for a number of years now. Normal men DO NOT want to even think about that and don’t know any better that they HAVE to deal with it because it is irresponsible and cruel to stick their heads in the sand. Men will shut you up if you try to tell them about it because they don’t want to deal with it.
A local school system where I once lived released the middle school’s sex ed curriculum which was basically gross in it’s graphic depiction of homo sexual behavior. It was grooming 101. When I showed it to some dads on the side of the sports field, you would have thought I put a cross up to vampires. None of them wanted to deal with it and seemed angrier at me for showing them than they were at the homos who were bothering their sons and daughters at school.
Men who don’t know and/or don’t want to know are going to have to be confronted. I think they are afraid of homo drama themselves. They don’t want to stand up to them and use their power to make them put their adult sex in the closet (private), where it belongs. It has to stop. Only men will stop it. If they fail to do that, homos will be legally raping boys in a few years from now.
Strangers at schools - government employees - have no right to be talking to children about sex. They have abused that trust and now sex education must be handled by parents privately - outside the school system. Teachers have no business inserting themselves into the sexuality of children.
Not only did they sit on the tape, They said they didn’t move forwrad with the story earlier due to lack of corroboration. ESPN = Ethical Sports Professionals...Not
It’s not ESPN’s job to report this to the authorities. This is an adult making the claim - he’s the one who should go to the police, which he did and was dismissed.
If ESPN was an eyewitness to molestation, as Coach McQueary claims he was in the Penn State case, that’s a different story.
I realize we get jaded with media charges against Republicans but a news organization is supposed to sit on a story until it can be corroborated, which it sounds like ESPN could not do probably because the police didn’t file a report.
Charges like this are highly prejudicial and hopefully we all remember the damage done to the young athletes in the Duke Lacrosse case. It’s also possible that cases like Duke’s or the Olympic Park bomber are exactly why news organizations shouldn’t be in a headlong rush to spread salacious stories until they can get some independent verification first.
have you heard the tape?
It would seem that the tape, itself, is a “story” all its own.
The woman is vile, repugnant, vulgar, and unbelievably immoral.
Her actions (or inaction) as described on the tape are criminal
Recently the network employed voice recognition experts to verify her voice before releasing this.
I’m not sure why they couldn’t have done the same back in 2002.
others have done similar things before and called it “investigative journalism”
media coverups...John Edwards, Bill Clinton, why hasn’t a childhood friend of Barrack Obama’s come forward, a girlfriend, or a classmate, and now the media is letting a child molester run free
She’s disgusting too. They both should go to jail.
ugghhh! I still can’t get over the depravity.
How many of these degenerates are parading about among the “elite” and the “well respected”???
unbelievable.
Can you imagine if that was Sarah Palin on tape?
How long do you think they would have waited then?
They wouldn’t have bothered consulting the voice recognition expert.
I hate to generalize, but I can see the truth in your post.
Time and time again we see the fear of confrontation - the inability to confront the ugliness.
But I also see that these predators are masters of manipulation.
One way they pick their victims is by choosing the ones who will have little credibility later on.
So when they do start to make waves it is easier for the other adults to look at these kids and say....well, so&so has always been a trouble maker and a spinner of tall tales.
On a CBSSprots blog today, it’s also being reported that on the tape the wife, Laurie Fine ALSO admits that SHE had sex with the kid when he was in HS..
Syracuse won the NCAA mens championship in 2003. Oviously, this was going on at the same time...possibly explains why ESPN sat on it..
