David Frum: In the Republican race, it’s Romney, Huntsman or bust
National Post ^ | 11/26/2011 | David Frum

Posted on 11/26/2011 5:41:45 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Yesterday, 11 National Post contributors named their preferred Republican nominee in less than 250 words.

Being more indecisive and longer-winded, I needed 24 extra hours and 500 more words.

I’m looking for two chief things in a candidate for 2012:

The temperament, judgment, deftness and largeness of spirit required in the presidential office; and The creativity and intellect to respond to the global economic crisis — a crisis threatening to actually get worse if (or when) the euro implodes.

Those conditions obviously and categorically exclude the clownish Herman Cain, the daffy Ron Paul, the dim Rick Perry and the firebrand congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

A step up from those four is former U.S. senator Rick Santorum. Santorum, who is the only candidate in the race to talk about the stagnation of wages and the slowing of upward mobility in the United States. Unfortunately, Santorum — a fierce social conservative — speaks for too narrow a slice of modern America. Santorum has also never held any administrative responsibility. It’s not enough for a president to say “do this” or “do that.” Issuing the orders is the easy part. The president must ensure that “this” and “that” actually happen. If you have never had such a responsibility before, the White House is a bad place to learn — as President Obama (who also lacked any prior administrative experience) proves on a daily basis.

DC insiders don’t get it. On either side.

That settles it... I’m voting for Mitt Romney or Jon Huntsman because David Frum says no one else has a snowball’s chance in hell of getting elected. That also shows how much he really knows about American politics since moving back to Canada.

It is also important for a candidate to be principled and have the courage of his convictions.
Of course, that requires having principles and convictions.

This is an old cartoon, so don't forget the "Pro-Communist Health Care" and "Anti-Communist Health Care" podiums:

Mitt Romney supports homo activists in their war against the Boy Scouts.

Starting during the Clinton Administration (does the name Roberta Achtenberg ring a bell?) the Boy Scouts came under relentless fire by the Democrats and their newsrooms for rejecting the idea that they, the Boy Scouts of America, should welcome homosexual scout leaders into the organization and let them take little boys off into the woods. Boy Scouts leaders didn’t think this was such a good idea. Naturally, Massachusetts Mittens sided with the homo activists.

Below are a couple of columns from 10 and 12 years ago about the Boy Scouts being turned away by Mitt Romney and the Olympics Committee for volunteer work on the Salt Lake Olympics. The Boy Scouts had been very active and high profile at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and were looking forward to participating once again. But the Boy Scouts had just won an important Supreme Court case (in June 2000 the Supreme Court ruled that the BSA was a private organization that could choose whoever they wanted as scout leaders and could therefore reject sodomites) and the Democrats/homos were still mighty ticked off about it. Massachusetts Mittens could always be counted on to pander to homo activists, of course, so he gladly came up with a lame lie of an excuse for turning the Boy Scouts away from the Salt Lake Olympics. The Boy Scouts’ disappointment was palpable, and Mitt Romney never returned their calls.

Newt WOULD yield an Obama landslide. He is reviled in and out of the party.

If the GOP nominee is Romney, I stay home. A Romney presidency would only serve to provide cover for "moderate" (ie., liberal) Republican whores to advance their own version of a big-government liberal agenda.

Personally, I will not reward the establishment scumbags of the Rockefeller wing of the GOP with a vote for their candidate, Mittens.
Screw them.

Romney has spoken well and firmly about the need to stop Iran’s nuclear weapons program. He has a keen understanding of the debt and financial problems of the U.S. and Europe.

“Hunts?” Guy’s your buddy right? I get it now. You don’t hate Newt because you’re an idiot, you hate him because you’re a liberal asswipe. Glad you outed yourself.”

Help me out here. I don’t hate Newt (I don’t hate any of the candidates, but admit that Romney makes me cringe with embarrassment) but I am a solid supporter of Jon Huntsman.

Does that make me one of those pro-life, pro-gun, tax-cutting, Ryan Plan supporting, ‘liberal asswipes’ too?

“Obama was scared of him and thought he better get hunts out of the way sooner rather than later.”

Exactly right. Pretty tough to beat a successful conservative governor (Huntsman hit 90% approval at one time, in one of the most conservative states in the nation - #1 in Job Creation, ‘Best Managed State in the Nation’ etc) who also has appeal to independents and conservative Democrats.

Far better, thought Obama, to remove this opponent from the 2012 battlefield. As an expert in the Far East, and as President George H.W. Bush’s Ambassador to Singapore, Huntsman was highly qualified for the post of Ambassador to China. Obama must have been pretty pleased at this cunning master stroke.

Alas, like everything else Obama touches, it has backfired badly. Possibly fatally for his hopes for a second term. Not only is Huntsman back, but he is now running, with yet another string to his bow.

Free Republic is no fan of Jon Huntsman. I can understand that, but I genuinely believe, that with every point Huntsman ticks upwards in New Hampshire, another bead of sweat appears on the head of a worried man in the Oval Office.

Jon Huntsman is an electoral nightmare for Obama-Biden 2012.

Romney really had a weak record as governor in MA.

Sure, if you want to start a PE company and buy out some underperforming manufacturers in the Midwest, packaged them up and resell them, then Mitt’s your man.

But he was the willing puppet of the Democrat legislature in MA, and Romneycare is the mark of a big government, small civil liberties, technocrat.
