Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance, Despite Party Backlash

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich isn’t backing off his “humane” immigration stance despite complaints from Republican hardliners and fellow Presidential hopefuls — he’s embellishing it.

The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate

(snip)

Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000.

“Path to legality”. More like a path to employers who want to pay wages lowered by a large supply of cheap labor accustomed to a third-world standard of living.

See my #117.

Jim, I deeply respect what you’ve done here on FR, and the voice you’ve given to those without voice.

I pray, though, that you will take Bible in hand and pray on this one over the passages about aliens in your land. Check in with Alamo-girl, imo the best on this entire site with her bible, and ask her analysis on those verses.

There is NO issue more important than the murder of 60 million innocents. After that, NOTHING comes close to spending out of control with 15 trillion debt and 90 trillion obligated. It is the security issue of our time.

It threatens to scuttle our military at a time that Russia just threatened us, China owns us and is aggressively pursing and well down the road toward a deep sea navy, Iran is this close to a nuke, and this president actually WANTS to destroy the military.

And, at the same time as all this, the ignoring of or hatred for God is sapping this nation of its character.

I will as long as I draw breath remain a FRiend. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Go get ‘em Gator. I think Jim Robinson, by sticking a fork in a leading candidate, is going to end up exactly with the one that he’s banning people from the board for supporting. Third party mentality.

Jim, the first Republican nominee who adopts what you just said as their stated policy on illegal immigration, will immediately shoot to the top of the polls.

From what I’ve seen, Herman Cain has come the closest to taking that stance. In the last debate, he was asked what the solution to illegal immigration is, and he said that we simply need to enforce the laws on the books.

Simple. Concise. Powerful. And EFFECTIVE.

“FWIW, I don’t ever see the political agreement to secure the border without some type of recognition of those that are already here.”

I guess some of us don’t understand this. We believe the federal government is already required to secure the border. Are we missing something?

Eating our own? If by our own you mean CONSERVATIVE, Romney was never one of our own. And Gingrich is leaving the fold as quickly as he humanely can.

I agree with you. Many of these writers are getting too particular. Barry Goldwater said that many conservatives think a candidate must fit in their molds perfectly to get their vote, and we end up with a liber Democrat , if they stay home and don't vote. Please, please realize your inaction will re-elect that lousy dictator Obama, and you may vote yourself out of ever having a chance to vote again. The first thing Newt said he will do is secure the border, the we have time to worry about the other stuff.

For some folks it’s xenophobia, for others it’s hatred of Mexicans/Hispanics, Congrats. Your statement does two things reveals your stupidity and hatred for America. GloBULL fool.

And your inability to accurately quote someone makes you dishonest.

If you believe that Newt’s proposal isn’t amnesty then there is no hope for you.

Somehow growing up in the 60’s and 70’s I wonder how my parents provided for me. At that time the USA didn’t trade with China or the USSR and yet somehow there was always food, toys, wagons, cars etc. all made in the USA. Somehow the crops got picked without a single illegal. Some kind of miracle.

I agree with Cain, for the most part, on that point: the states are the ones closest to the problem and should be allowed to deal with it.

There are some points at which the fed gov would be better, or should at least be involved, particularly to standardize the process, which ultimately aims to remove illegal immigrants.

Border states especially ought to be given (no pun intended) wide latitude. Much as in the case of Louisiana having the authority to reject federal troops after Katrina hit, the fed gov should be mainly there by invitation only.

And this is regardless whether Republicans prevail in the elections or not. Even a Republican Congress and President aren’t going to do better than to get behind the states.

(Of course, where established law already stipulates that the federal government has the authority, the fed govt can and should function in those regards.)

Ten or twenty states with laws like Alabama’s, I think we’d have a much smaller problem overall.

If we want to become Hispanic-majority, then the BEST THING we can do is keep the Illegals that are here, and watch them have kids and more kids, and grand kids and more grand kids. If not, then they need to GO HOME, and be prevented from coming back here.

Do you see a political will emerging to secure the border without some plan for those that are already here? I don't see it happening and the longer we wait for the perfect plan the less likely we are to get anything done.

I think the visa idea is probably the best we can do with those that are anchored here by their American born children. The economy has already caused a lot that don't have families with them to leave.

This election is not about immigration. It is about the economy, middle east and our government within. You people that our single value voters loose site on the big picture. Abortion is the only deal breaker to me.

THIS MAN OBAMA HAS TO BE REMOIVED!

If they respect our laws they will enter the country legally. If they come in illegally, then they don’t get my respect or my sympathy. I pray they make it back home safely.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. But you have to abide by the law.

"I also KNOW that the border MUST be sealed immediately for any plan to work well."

Then you better take another look at his plan....

"At the same time we are controlling the border we should make it easier for honest people to visit America honestly."

To understand the ramifications of that, go over to Krieble and read up on their positions on immigration and and how it pertains to their Red Card.

Welfare was frowned upon back then. It was considered shameful to rely on others for your keep.

LOL!

I will not be voting for him in the primaries or general. I prefer my enemies in front of me, not sneaking up on me from behind.

and not one of them have put out a 10 point plan for either solving the immigration problem or even a 10 point deportation plan.

Herman Cain has a 1 point plan....enforce the laws already on the books.

Every time I see Santorum, I think Arlen Specter.

Every time I see Mitt, Newt and Perry I see a long list of bad things.

Everytime I see Cain and Bachmann I see a much shorter list of bad things.

You're going to have create a longer list of Santorum bad things.
