Sen. John Kerry (D., Mass.) Monday said a deal to cut the federal deficit fell apart because Republicans refused to raise taxes, and said the issue would be the defining debate for Congress as the country heads toward the 2012 elections.
"America is stuck with the absolute rigidity of people who wanted to protect the wealthiest people in the country instead of providing $1.2 trillion of deficit reduction," Kerry said in impassioned remarks hours after the congressional panel announced it had failed to reach a deal. "That's the fight we have to take out to the country over the course of these next months. That will define this next year I believe in this country."
He tried to salvage a deal by presenting an idea in last-minute talks. But a Republican aide shot down the plan, saying it wasn't clear the informal plan was backed by other Democrats. The plan was a reworked version of an earlier proposal, according to a supercommittee aide.
"This doesn't end here today and tonight," Kerry said. "I want to say that to every American. This fight just begins, because now we're going to hold people accountable and we're going to continue to bring to the floor, continue to bring to the Senate of Congress choices about how we can act responsibly and get our nation back on track."
He also said he was "disappointed." He said "we had an opportunity to be able to show the world that the Congress of the United States knows how to govern, and we had an opportunity to prove at a time that Europe is in a particularly fragile economic situation that we were ready to show the way forward, and even as we did so to make America a safe haven for investing for money."

Kerry knows that “the rich” will never have to pay the higher tax rates he proposes in spite of any “loopholes” closed - both Democrats and Republicans (including him) will provide plenty of other “loopholes” (deductions, credits and other mechanisms) for “the rich” to keep their tax bill as low or lower than it is now.
Democrats (including him) will then blame this on Republicans when tax revenue fails to materialize.
Kerry’s wife - and their combined net worth and income (which is mostly hers) - need to constantly be in the news and on the internet as much as conservatives can put it there. (Sane and smart) creativity is needed to get the word out. Only if this is constantly flashed in the minds of “the poor” who also happen to vote Democrat will they perhaps start actually seeing through the scam a little teeny bit.
FUJK - the "wealthiest people in the country" are all enthroned on Capitol Hill!
From a man who said reducing the size of a planned Budget Increase is a Cut when he was running for President in 2004. Nobody called him on that back then.
Just last week on Meet The Depressed he admitted that there were no Budget Cuts in play, just a slower rate of planned increases.
Why do none of our Candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, bring up the fraud of Baseline Budgeting?
Kerry is too big to fail: people in MA simply adore him and always will. He will be the heir to the EMK mystique.
Complete jokes are idolized in MA.
Because they know “baseline budgeting” is above the IQ of the American people, who remain a confused lot
Did Lovie get the yacht moved to a different location Thurston? So it doesn’t get taxed.
Senator Kerry meant to say “Texas” will be an issue in the coming months, and it was a “botched joke”.
I had no idea, Lurch got a SILVER STAR? I wanna read the citation.
