Newt Gingrich may face backlash in Iowa over immigration comments

DES MOINES — Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called “humane” but that his opponents quickly decried as providing “amnesty.”

The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

Imagine someone who robbed a bank, perhaps several banks, perhaps several times; then that someone helped several family members rob some banks; and they got away with robbing banks for several years, then decades ...

Since this lucky fellow, and all his lucky family, and all their lucky friends, and their families, got away with robbing banks for so long, ...

Now all these lucky bank robbers get free bank accounts, loaded with free money; they get to be honored members of the boards of the banks they robbed, with full voting rights on the disposition of the remaining wealth of the bank customers they previously robbed into oblivion.

Whatta country!!!

A small percent may move to another state

That's why we need to enforce federal laws which would result in a similar benefit in all 50 states.

They’ll still stay even when enforced. It’ll take full expuslion to get them out. They will not ever leave to Mexico on their own en masse.

That is a plain fact.

Fly them home and bill the home country for the full cost of repatriating them.

The pro-ILLEGAL alien crowd likes to talk about the kids of ILLEGAL aliens (who are ILLEGAL aliens also) that were brought here by their parents. Why disrupt their lives when the parents are to blame? Consider this...

If an ILLEGAL alien stole your car and gave it to his son who was also ILLEGAL, should the ILLEGAL son be able to keep your car? After all, he didn't steal it, his father did.

There are millions of out of work American citizens who are out of work because their jobs have been taken by ILLEGAL aliens. I have compassion for those Americnas, not the ILLEGALs who have their jobs.

Sounds good to me. Did anyone on the GOP ticket propose anything like that?

For the last ten years, new immigrant citizens have voted 80% for the Democratic Party.

That is the essential issue.

Would the Hard Left support Amnesty and Open Borders if new citizens voted 80% for Conservatives?

Of course not.

Current immigration policy is political suicide for the GOP.

They’ll still stay even when enforced.

The state laws prove you wrong. They leave. They leave now to go to another state because they want to work in that state. Enforce the laws in all 50 states and they go home.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Four months ago Alabama passed the toughest immigration enforcement law in the nation. The left-wing has been doing everything to keep the bill tied up in the courts. However, even before going into effect, the bill is working.

Six weeks ago USAToday said that illegal aliens were packing up and leaving Alabama. USAToday actually reported this as if it was a bad thing. Now there is more good news for Alabama. Unemployment has dropped significantly. In October, the unemployment rate went from 9.8 to 9.3. This .5% drop is five times larger than the drop in the national average. Counties most known for illegal aliens saw the biggest drop. Marshall County, known for illegal aliens working at the chicken processing plants, saw unemployment drop .7% in October.

Just the knowledge that Alabama intends to enforce immigration law in the future has sent illegal aliens packing. Continue reading on Examiner.com Alabama reaps huge rewards from immigration enforcement bill.

Yes, they’re packing to more friendly states.

I’m saying they can’t find a less friendly state than Mexico. Even in prison here they are better off than there.

No. And you could remove the word "Hard" and it would still prove true.

Those who claim to be on the right but support amnesty are trying to hurt the Republican Party's chances of winning national elections in the future.

They are only here because they get work. If there was no work they would leave. And it is absurd to suggest they would rather be in an American prison than free to work in their home in Mexico.

AND.. I’ll say, punish employers of illegals strongly. Years in prison. Demand that it be documented always. At the federal level.

That still won’t really significantly effect things anymore than, sadly, drug laws do. The payoffs and punishments aren’t strong enough.

DP for drugs or hiring illegals, ok. I’ll go for those.

Will any GOP candidate go for that? Nope. This is an academic subject. They’ll, at best, talk about degrees of enforcement. You know that is the case.

Jump in Sarah?

Her views on illegals are same as Newt and she endorsed Mr Amnesty McCain

Bachmann is the only candidate espousing total deportation

Free Republic truly serious all of a sudden about all this then draft Buchanan

He really gets it

Trust me most would rather be in an American prison than life in Mexico.

Only Bachmann had a solid deportation stand

The rest all have similar views....more or less

Despite the demagoguery between them and here too

I’m glad someone will stand up for deportation vs amnesty.

I’m sick of conservatives getting slammed for being in a gray zone otherwise. None of these ‘conservatives’ will deport en masse. Maybe Bachmann, but I doubt that too.

Send them ALL back to Mexico.

If they can't find work or welfare most will leave.

Let them apply for entry through LEGAL and ESTABLISHED channels. No special deals!

I dont see total deportation as politically feasible no matter how much we here like it..

It will be something between blanket amnesty and that....which is part of what Gingrich alluded to

Newt supports the Arizona and Alabama efforts that he calls borne of frustration

Marco Rubio...loved by freepers as yet another Cain style race/ethnic identity pick is on record opposing those efforts

Does he get the same emotinal rancor here?

No...he has not stolen St Hermans thunder either has he?...now you know the rest of the story

Years in prison for hiring an illegal alien?
why not just hang them?
