At the top of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich is poised for what some call the Perry Plunge for supporting part of the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.
Like former frontrunner Rick Perry, Gingrich became a target of criticism among fellow Republicans at Tuesday nights nationally televised debate for saying that some people should be allowed to stay in the United States even if theyre here illegally.
The former U.S. House Speaker said longtime residents who have raised families here, paid taxes and stayed out of trouble should not face deportation.
I dont see how the party that says its the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century, Gingrich said during the CNN debate.
Im prepared to take the heat for saying: Lets be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families, he said.
Gingrichs comments were quickly blasted on conservative websites like Free Republic.

I think you make a good point there. What you listed is much more impressive than what I had understood about him prior, although I did not think of him as a light-weight at all.
The “sciences”, as you call them, are the inferior fields. Mathematics, Religion ~ Law, Medicine ~ these are all part of the Liberal Arts.
There you go - our railroads are underutilized, and using container shipping we could perform this project efficiently on the West Coast.
Do intelligent people understand that enforcement of laws prohibiting the hiring of illegals will solve both the illegal immigration problem as well as the problem of high unemployment?
What about conservative principles. That is way more important then the economy.
The only point I observed Gingrich conceding on the alien issue was regarding families which had become established for 25 yrs + here in the US. IMHO, they would be able to get recourse anyhow, so it really isn’t a concession.
We shouldn’t get concerned over that as much his encouragement to give every foreign student in science and engineering an automatic extension to work here in the US.
There are many, many, many engineers and science majors out of work and looking to apply their skillsets in anything remotely touching upon their disciplines who have been born and bred US citizens from American families since the Mayflower.
The last thing we need is more minority quotas from overseas competing for American jobs.
Gingrich also said if they were working and were church goers they should be able to stay. Keep this in mind— Gingrich is Catholic, a recent convert. The Catholic Church would love to have millions more Mexicans here, legally or not. Most of them are Catholic. Fills the coffers, keeps churches open. Who cares if they’re breaking the law.
I’m looking for a job. For almost every application I mail I get an affirmative action form that I’m urged to fill out and return to the employer. The first category listed that I’m supposed to check is “A. Hispanic/Latino or Not Hispanic/Latino.” Now, Newt’s wonderful, law-abiding, church-going Latinos/Hispanics who’ve been given in-state tuition at universities across the country will get another leg up against native-born, American white people who’ve been paying taxes and obeying the law for years. These wonderful Latinos whose only crime is that they’ve broken our laws and have continued to break our laws for twenty years get preference over me in hiring decisions. They’re a member of the protected groups that are listed on the affirmative action “applicant data card” that I’m supposed to return. In fact, they’re now being listed first on every form I’ve gotten in the last year or so.
Gingrich and the rest of the inside-the-beltway types are out of touch with what’s happening in this country. This data is not just reported to the feds for statistical purposes. It is used in HIRING decisions. I know, because I have sat in on committees that used racial/ethnic data about the candidates to determine who would be interviewed.
Gingrich likes to deride the academics in Obama’s White House who are making policies and decisions that are divorced from the realities that are the results of government. Keep in mind, he’s one of that class of academic jerks.
I suggest, Mr. Gingrich and Mr. Perry, and anyone else who agrees with this madness that you go out and talk to the unemployed in this country who are facing the results of affirmative action before you open the doors wide to any more foreign-born minorities who will be given preferences over American citizens.
And Gingrich, this is for you if you read Free Republic. You’ve lost my vote, Bub. I hope you enjoyed your brief status as frontrunner. After last night, you’re toast.
Oh gezzz...I remember when Bush was running the second time, and all the big party groupies were saying, "Don't bring it up, there will be plenty of time to face this once he's elected! Lets not eat our own"..
I'll never forget that bull cheet coated crap.
Tell the hundreds of thousands of victims families, who've been raped, shot, stabbed, murdered, burglarize, robbed, and ran over, "It's no big issue"
immigration has EVERYTHING to do with the bad economy
HEY NEWT! Yeah YOU! We have been PO’ed FOR 25 YEARS at our sorry Federal Government for not enforcing illegal alien laws!
NO MORE AMNESTY TALK!
Change your mind and apologize for your liberal brain cramp on the illegal alien, water-under-the-bridge attitude.
Last night you smacked the illegal alien tar baby, so unless you free yourself real soon, all we have to do is add the feathers and plop you on a rail.
BTW, do you like green feathers? Green is a big hit now with Obama, AND it is one of the colors in the Mexican Flag.
Illegal aliens need to be deported along with their kids - not embraced. Not all of them are named Juan and Juanita. Gingrich does not get it that border security IS national security. For me, his support of amnesty for illegals and legalization of anchor babies is a deal-breaker. I will never vote for an Open Borders Republican. I will not be supporting Newt Gingrich for President!
You didn’t hear him! Gingrich’s positions are barely better than Obama’s. I don’t want to vote for the lesser of two evils. I want a candidate who puts America first. Conservatives are just stupid in embracing expediency over principle. If he is the best we can get, I’ll take four more years of Obama.
When Newt is hitting on all cylinders he can appear to be awesome.
Then his brain goes haywire and he veers off the road to the left where he says and does crazy things for a while.
When he snaps out of it, he makes an upfront confession then goes through the whole routine again.
If he makes it to the White House he will have relapses like the Newt-Pelosi-Sofa event, the Newt-Sharpton-Tour, etc.
We can count on it.
We haven’t deported those who are breaking our laws. We’ll never be able to stop Islamic terrorism here until we regain control over our borders. A country can survive many things but not the traitors and fools in its midst.
I can see there are people on here too stupid to get it. You are the folks who will ensure Obama is re-elected because you won’t demand better. And Gingrich is as liberal as Obama. He also supports Obamacare. Wake the heck up!
I’m with you. Law-breakers should not be rewarded. I break the law, I go to jail, or pay a fine. There should not be any anchor baby preferences, either. That’s a misreading of the Constitution. The children of ambassadors who are born in this country aren’t automatically American citizens. Why should the children of illegal aliens be given citizenship just because their mothers managed to get across the border and crawl into an emergency room in El Paso to give birth?
We should insist that the Republican candidate end this nonsense. Period. Eliminate the magnets. Make the climate less hospitable and these millions whom Gingrich says we can’t deport in mass will leave on their own. Get off the stage Gingrich or, better yet, join Obama’s team. If you shoot off your mouth you have to face the consequences of your idiocy. Leave.
It's the only thing that makes sense.
That’s the long and the short of it. It’s sad. It’s reality.
