Perry finds his debate comfort zone with get-tough stance on border issues

WASHINGTON — Texas Gov. Rick Perry vowed to completely secure the U.S.-Mexican border within 12 months of being inaugurated president during a GOP presidential debate Tuesday that showcased the emergence of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the go-to alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

In a debate focused on national security, Perry was quickest to the count on border issues, saying he would complete “strategic fencing” along the 1,969-mile U.S.-Mexican border, add “boots on the ground” and aviation assets such as Predator surveillance aircraft to intercept potential Iranian-backed terrorists crossing into the United States from Mexico as well as to stem the northbound flow of undocumented immigrants and illegal drugs.

The three-term Texas governor, clearly comfortable on the topic during his eighth nationally televised debate, said he would work with Mexico to achieve a new level of security and would consider sanctions against Mexican banks that handle the illicit proceeds of multibillion dollar drug cartels.

“All of those together can make that country (Mexico) substantially more secure and our border secure,” Perry declared. “As president of the United States, I’ll promise you one thing – that within 12 months that border will be shut down and it will be secure.”

Perry and Bachmann also briefly dueled over continuing U.S. aid to Pakistan, an Islamic nation of 150 million people with a stockpile of nuclear weapons. Perry reiterated his pledge to zero out annual foreign aid to all countries including Pakistan.

“They’ve showed us time after time that they can’t be trusted,” said Perry, in an elliptical reference to Pakistani authorities knowingly or unknowingly providing haven to bin Laden. “Until Pakistan clearly shows that they have America’s best interests in mind, I would not send them one penny.”

Sorry, but a whole lot of Cain supporters after the debate last night says Cain is done.

In the last month, Cain is down 30% (from 26 to 18.2% in RCP). Perry is down 38% (12.5 to 7.7%) in the same period. Perry has not stopped the bleeding that I have seen, though he did get a small bounce for a bit before dropping more. Cain can probably not afford to slip much further, but he still has the easier path to the nomination at this point.

Remember Perry came into the race in mid August while the others have been in much longer. Perry likes being the underdog.

I don’t there’s anything Cain can say or do at this point to regain the lead because the nice grampa who’ll take care of us all thing has worn off and the lack of substance has been revealed.

I don’t know if Perry can regain the momentum or not, but I know he’ll try and I know he has the money and organization and good credentials to do it with.

Do you think some Mexican is saying to the wife, ‘let’s cross the border into Texas. I can do yard work for 20 years and you can be a maid and when we have kids maybe one or two of them will get TO PAY FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION at instate rates.’

Aw, come on Altura, you're taking all the fun out of it. :)

Cheap energy is going to become a huge issue and it is critical that we drill everywhere we can in order to keep a healthy economy.

Throughout most of my adult life energy has been too expensive due to taxes as well as insane over-regulation. Had we drilled when we needed to, without interference form militant environmentalists and Democrats my standard of living as well as everyone else’s in this country would be 20% to 30% higher than it is.

The Boomer generation allowed the above miscreants to scr3w us over badly. I hope genx, geny and milleniums will be wiser than to buy into the pseudo-science carp that has been the rule for the last 40 years or so.

“It has been for quite a while now and everyone in Texas knows that. The Mexican government can’t handle the problem and to keep it from spilling over into the US, we will almost certainly need to send troops into Mexico with or without the good wishes of the Mexican government.”

Bovine scat. Our Constitution is quite clear about this problem. We protect our borders. The Mexican government “can’t handle the problem” because they are the problem. They’re corrupt. Until the citizens are serious about their corrupt officials they’ll continue to live in fear, abuse, and poverty.

“...TO PAY FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION at instate rates.’ That’s just a silly argument.”

And you’re asking me to be logical? Pot, meet kettle.

You’ve missed the glaring problem, but I won’t bother explaining it. As a matter of fact, your comments are really not worth any more of my attention.

Oh, come on you support amnesty, we know it don't be bashful. Nothing to be ashamed of, we are adults here.

Your passive-aggressive posts reflect the same interactive style as Mitt Romney. I've decided that you are a Romney supporter. We're all adults here. Nothing for you to be ashamed of. Why hide your advocacy of an establishment moderate with constant attacks on Rick Perry? Tell us why you support Mitt. Mitt's MO is to hide the truth (though it's not so hidden, is it?).

Break out of the Romney mold and speak your mind freely. Do you support him for his past positions, current positions, a blend of his positions, his looks, his religion, the MSM position that he is inevitable, tradition that he is next in line -- a blend of all the above?

The one good thing about your consistent history of slamming and spinning is that you recognize Rick Perry is the real threat to Romney's weak hold on the nomination. You know that Gov. Perry will do what he says - that he is an honest, principled man.

That is Perry calling me heartless, or having no heart if you prefer

That sounds like something you'd expect to hear on a first grade playground.

Grow up!

Oh, he’s a Cain supporter who doesn’t have a clue that his idiocy and hate do not attract people to his candidate.

In fact, anyone who might think of being a Cain supporter would be repelled by him.

Yes. Perry should grow up and admit his mistake rather than calling names when the majority of the conservatives disagrees with him.

No, I’m concerned with his lack of logic and his worry about feelings. He is the one using emotional labels.

You obviously are not aware that Perry is one of the nicest people around, according to the people who know him well!...you prefer to judge him by one hoof in mouth statement.

You keep on being influenced by the lies and intentional nisrepresentations of him on FR and you might be cutting off your own nose to spite your own face!
