I live north of Houston. A few weeks ago, I had a new floor put in my downstairs - Pergo wood laminate. A fellow called me to tell me who would come to put in the floor. He gave me one name which was a Spanish surname, and said don't worry, he was born here and speaks good English.
So they came and the English speaking one said his partner didn't speak English. I did not ask him if the man was here illegally. Well, in the process of putting in the floor, a phone line wiring problem came up and the non-English speaking fellow was a whiz, knowing exactly what to do to fix the problem. The English speaking fellow had no clue what to do.
I hope the smart non-English speaking fellow is in line to become a citizen. Did I get a conversation going about that? No, I wanted my floor put in. If illegal, did I want him out of my house? No, he was the one who could fix the phone line problem.
The point is, in the abstract, one can say kick them all out. In reality, I needed that guy that day. He never stopped working and knew wiring and electricity. I hope he was here legally, but I didn't ask.
My new floor is beautiful.
Your point is well stated..however if the guy was an illegal and we weren’t hiring them ..then the man helping to do your floor might have been an American with a job. It really is a catch twenty two when there are no guidelines established.
