The bipartisan congressional committee tasked with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction announced on Monday it cannot reach agreement by the Wednesday deadline, a stark if not unexpected admission that its efforts have ended in failure.
"After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committees deadline," the co-chairs, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said.
The declaration came late Monday afternoon in a written statement from the 12-member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction despite last-second discussions in closed-door meetings.
The committee, in the end, could not resolve that Republicans would not go as far as Democrats wanted on allowing more revenue raisers, and Democrats did not want to move on entitlement reforms. Intense messaging by both political parties on which was more to blame is surely to spill out for days, if not months.

True we need across the board CUTS (actual reductions) in spending.
No caption necessary.
Maybe. maybe not.
“They’re going to walk in just before Thanksgiving and say, ‘All right, we can shoot you in the head or cut off your right leg, which do you prefer?’” he added. “What they ought to do is scrap the committee right now, recognize it’s a dumb idea, go back to regular legislative business, assign every subcommittee the task of finding savings. Do it out in the open through regular legislative order and get rid of this secret phony business.”
Amen to what Newt said. I cannot believe the GOP members of congress was foolish enough to agree to the “poison pill” arrangement of this “super committee.” The Dems never intended to act in good faith. Failure was pre-ordained. They wanted DoD to be destroyed. Now they have the means to acceive it.
Maybe. maybe not.
ooops! Dupe post. Sorry. :(
Exactly. I can't imagine why anybody on the GOP side thought for one minute that this was done for anything but show.
Oh really. So, when someone’s husband gets his leg blown off and has to be flown to Germany for life saving surgery, there won’t be a surgeon there. And, all fresh troops will have to be deployed from the states to the war???? That’s smart. Sounds like you don’t know a thing about defense.
Speaking of the dumbest senator, take a look at the drudgereport.com huge picture....she looks as dumb as she is....
The real question is how the reboot will happen.
There's a particular Republican candidate running for president who outlined his plan to cut $1 Trillion from the budget IN HIS FIRST YEAR of office. He's the only one who has a consistent voting record his entire time in Congress. He says what he means and means what he says.
Sadly, the liberal/neo-con media and political groups have chosen to ridicule and marginalize him as being "too radical," preferring to support anyone who maintains the status quo.
So, no surprise here. The statists on both sides of the aisle cannot muster enough intestinal fortitude to make hard decisions to pull the country out of this mess. Expect more of the same leadership, regardless of who you put in office because we keep electing cowards.
Anyone who votes for an incumbent in 2012 is a blathering idiot. Throw them ALL out on their behinds...
You are so right Dr. Suess, if we do not start voting new candidates in
without term limits being enacted, we are definitely doomed. We must
enact term limits on our own in the voting booth!!!!!! This should be the
goal of the tea party your congress critter has been in for four years their
constituents need to vote them out. Everyone of them are corrupt and
getting beyond wealthy from lobbyists.
Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson isn’t letting them pull any wool over his eyes. I hope he can stay tough.
I never used the word “defense” and for good reason. The difference between Pentagon spending to police the world (the bulk of the military budget) and actual defense is like the difference between night and day. Our vast spending to be global cop only undermines the true national defense envisioned by the founders.
BTW, Obama doesn’t have “wet dreams” about cutting the military. Google Leon Panetta if you don’t believe me. His comments in the last week show that Panetta is a shill for what Ike (who should know!) aptly called the military-industrial complex.
Well said! It is time to stop letting the yes men for the current Pentagon status quo to obscure the distinction between defense and military spending.
The Democrats, who deep down love the warfare state as much as the welfare state, won’t “win” anything if the GOP calls Obama’s bluff and embrace sequestration. Cutting the Pentagon is the last thing Obama wants as shown by the recent comments of Leon Panetta, a confirmed shill for the military industrial complex.
