Union Leader Blasts Cain for Refusing to Allow Interview to Be Filmed
The Corner ^ | 11/21/2011 | Katrina Trinko

From New Hampshire’s Union Leader:

Cain’s decision was made after a video showed him fumbling an answer about Libya during a newspaper editorial board interview in Milwaukee — and right before he was to do an interview with this newspaper, which we wanted C-SPAN to record and broadcast. That wasn’t going to happen, a Cain campaign spokesman said, because “videos are typically used for television and it’s a newspaper. We decided we didn’t want to do the video.”

Videos these days are used by everyone, even random people on the street who record candidates with their cell phones. The difference between television and newspaper interviews is not that cameras are present, but that newspaper interviews tend to be longer and more in depth. The Cain campaign knows this. It seems that Cain is fine with everyone seeing him give short, prepared answers, but not with everyone seeing him try to answer questions in which he has more than 30 or 60 seconds to respond. He would do well to rethink that decision, for it gives the impression that he’s got something to hide.

The Cain campaign said last week their policy was now not to permit filming at any newspaper interviews of Herman Cain.

This isn’t good for Herman. His response needed to be, “Get the whole thing on video if you want, and I will do likewise with my own videotapers.” The key is to make sure you have your own video of the interview so the newsroom can’t do a hack edit job leaving you with no recourse.

No Newt manages quite handily to destroy himself with his out of control mouth. So far he has managed to avoid doing it again this month, but given Newt’s history, it is only a matter of time.

I can live with an imperfect candidate if I believe and trust him. Cain still has my vote because I believe he’s a good man who actually loves America and wants to serve.

He stands head and shoulders above the perpetual politicians.

> I am really, really, REALLY worried about what a union
> leader thinks! NOT.

Actually, the Union Leader used to be THE conservative newspaper in New England.

Since Bill and Nacky Loeb have passed away, they have become more GOP Establishment.

Currently, the Union Leader is smitten with Mittens, so Cain was smart to tell them to pound sand. They would have looked for something, anything, in the recording to make Cain look stupid, and the the local commie TV media would have played it in a continuous loop.

It was a smart move. Cain has finally woke up to the fact that the media is no longer interested in reporting the facts. Instead they want to make up a story.

I see the decision as being savvy and well reasoned.

It showed the lack of depth and seriousness if Cain and was the only big takeaway from the entire debate.

I'll just assume you went into it with an open and objective mind. I thought both Cain and gingrich gave well founded, conservative, and practical answers in their discussion.

Cain took a hit the other day on a foreign policy question. he's taken several big hits on foreign policy. It's his greatest area of weakness. Foreign policy is also a weakness for Perry, Romney, Gingrich, Huntsman, Paul, Bachmann, Johnson and Rohmer. Candidates have to sell themselves. You don't sell your product by pointing out its biggest drawbacks.

I thought I read somewhere that his campaign was going to film them, he just wasn’t going to allow the media to do this. Frankly, I wish they’d all do this. Any time any of them can make hay out of a candidate’s statements or interviews. Cain’s statement about foreign policy the other day was reported as he wasn’t supposed to know “anything” about foreign policy but he actually said he wasn’t supposed to know “everything” about foreign policy. Huge difference. I don’t think ANY of our candidates should trust the media as far as they can spit them.

Look how Perry was crucified at the domestic policy debate. He had very intelligent answers to the questions he was asked. Then he had a brain fart. No one heard anything about any of his responses except that. Of course those kinds of things will be reported but a responsible press (an oxymoron, I know) would have said something acknowledging his improvement and knowledge of the issues. It’s like Cain’s Libya interview. He actually got it right and the interview was 20 minutes long. The pause sounded bad, yes, but when you hear the questions before that (basically asking the same question in rapid succession about 0bama & Bush) you realize he was trying to clarify whether they wanted him to discuss 0bama’s handling of it.

About the only one this wouldn’t happen to, I’d guess, is Newt. If this was a debate club he’d be king. Well, and Romney because they just assume he’ll be the nominee (after they supposedly drive us away from the true conservatives). I think that’s why supporters of Perry & Cain are sticking with their candidates. It’s time to stop letting them get away with it anymore. Our candidate MUST be Cain, Newt or Perry. The others simply can’t win against 0bama and I doubt they’ll get any traction now. If we can’t get one of those three the nomination then we’ll be in real trouble here.

Anytime one of our candidates decides to NOT give the press the upper hand, good for them.

More interesting was that he tried to cut the interview from 1 hour to 20 minutes — most candidates are clamoring for more time to give their views, not less time. Candidates don’t usually like sound bite answers, and like the newspaper interviews because they are longer.

This plays into the perception that Cain can’t actually answer questions in depth enough for a 1-hour interview. Of course, he ended up not doing the interview at all.

They can take their “union” and shove it their collective smelly Obamas.

And stay there.

There are a few around here that like to find the smallest and pettiest things to pick on someone for.

Cain is called dumb if lets them video the event and he is called dumb if he says no.

It gets old, especially when they play into the media nastiness.

Most candidates love these interviews, because it gives them the opportunity to get their message out to the voters. Of course, that’s why most candidates love them being broadcast on C-Span, because then their message goes out unfiltered by the editorial board.

During that video about Libya fumble, I have not seen any of the part where Cain gave excellent responses to questions. They picked out the only part which was embarrassing and put it up on youtube. Screw the media. Go straight to the people.

And as I have posted again and again, major issues are 22 million unemployed, millions of foreclosures, exploding deficits and national debt, rocketing cost of healthcare made worse by Obamacare etc. Libya is just a small pimple on the elephants a$$.

Of course, most Cain supporters post to the full video of his “Libya” interview and say it is a good interview and the video is worth watching.

So why would those supporters also claim that it’s great for Cain to not do the interviews on camera, if they feel the full interviews are helpful to Cain? Do they NOT want Cain to do things that are helpful, or is this a backhand acknowledgement that the full video isn’t REALLY that good for Cain?

Remember, this video was going to C-Span, so everybody would be able to see the full 1-hour question-and-answer session, unfiltered. This is supposed to be something Cain is good at, why would his supporters be happy he refused?

This move is bad in the sense that it gives the impression he is afraid to appear on video for fear of looking clueless and uninformed.

It’s good in the sense that if he is clueless and uninformed at least nobody will see it.

I've seen all the games and know how they work. Another favorite is to demand that a candidate fire a certain staffer and when they do, announce that the candidate's campaign is on its last legs.

I swear, its like we have a bunch of middle school children running our elections.

Kindly don’t accuse everyone who has a problem with Cain for being for Romney.

I’d rather have Cain than Romney, but I’m for Perry.
