Are Mormons "Weird"?
Mormon Defense League ^ | August 12, 2011 | Mormon Defense League

The LDS Church is politically neutral, as is MDL. Mormons hold elected office and positions of responsibility in both US political parties and various parties worldwide. When we respond to any issue regarding politics, we do so only to correct misinformation and misperceptions about the Church, not in an effort to promote a particular candidate or party.

Recently, Politico reported that part of President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign strategy will be to portray Mitt Romney, a Mormon and possible Republican presidential nominee, as “weird.” The Politico report did not specifically tie the “weird” charge to Romney’s Mormon faith, but many commentators have speculated that is the logical application of such a strategy.

Commentators from various political perspectives have also condemned any such strategy. Blogger Jane Hamsher wrote: “To preach religious tolerance as Obama does, and then engage in this kind of appeal to religious bigotry, is both hypocritical and pernicious, not to mention self-defeating…As the economy gets worse, people better be really careful about stoking tribalist rage against any minority.” Researcher and author Glenn Stanton agreed: “Yes, you can be pretty sure that it will be his Mormon faith where most of the ‘weirdness’ innuendos will land. And this from a president who had to finally and reluctantly distance himself from his own faith heritage.” Former presidential speechwriter David Frum noted: “The attacks will tiptoe up to the line of outright anti-Mormon bigotry.” In Time, political reporter Michael Crowley summed it up: “You’d like to think that the people who work for a man who has been slurred countless times because of his race would take a higher road.”

Wow. Similar to my lds uncle’s experiences. My aunt lingered in the hospital over ten weeks with a brain tumor, with four teenagers at home and trying to care for everything. No one from their ward offered help. (Except the pizza someone brought them for Thanksgiving). They lost everything, no fund raisers, no house cleaning, not a card.......My uncle was a bishop. They don’t talk about it at ward, they don’t mention it to their lds friends. How do I know because my uncle relates the pizza story to “see how they helped me”.
Yet, they dutifully stay, trudging off to ward every week, singing in the choir still saying mormonISM is true christianity.

I have to say that I hadn’t planned on taking her to church: that was the night Clinton was elected, and the party was over by the time we got to GOP headquarters. Still, it looks like it worked out for the best! :)

As for your fiance, well, sometimes all we can do is pray. I know it’s hard, but if we really could control the world or other people’s salvation, then Mormonism would be true. Since we’re only human, we have to trust God, instead.

Absolutely, this happened in the early 80’s, so it was many, many years ago....I have to say, I didn’t see it coming until he was already involved. He did a good job keeping it from me until, I guess, he had enough information to try to get me to convert. I do remember feeling like a demon had taken over..how could he say those things that I knew were not biblical. Shook me up badly!

I look at that experience and realize it was a stepping stone to the wonderful, Christian man I married.

"She is a known and fairly open Romney supporter. I would NOT be comfortable with a Mormon president, I know too much about them (having been one). Mitt is the rule, not the exception once you get beyond the Zion PR curtain. I found that out the hard way."

I would add the caveat that Mitt is the rule among leadership. Most folks who have an LDS neighbor probably see them as honest. It's one thing to be the deceived, it's another thing entirely to be the deceiver.

That is exactly what happened. Make no mistake, Mormonism is demonic to its core.

I used to lament my time in Mormonism until I saw that it was a stepping stone to my salvation and my work in ministry and also part of what prepared me to marry a wonderful Christian man like MrR.

My experience was different. With few exceptions, even the rank and file LDS were dishonest, greedy, self righteous prigs. Not just the missionaries but individual members. As MrR says “I didn’t realized I had so much faith in humanity to lose”.

The LDS portray an image of honest, but the one or two actually honest members (about their beliefs and towards gentiles and such) have been disfellowshipped or on their way out and have been hurt by other members.

You keep claiming ‘hate’ without showing any. Elsie (and the rest of us) use LDS OWN sources and personal experience.

However, it is sad that people like you keep repeating the same accusations and never back them up, whereas we back up our exposure of Mormonism with actual quotes.

It is never hate to tell someone the truth and the truth is Mormonism is a lie and a deceptive corporation. It is the CNN of modern American Religion - you can’t trust a word that comes out of their mouth. I found that out the hard way.
