George Will Dismisses Newt Gingrich, Scoffs At Idea That He Is A ‘Historian’

George Will really doesn’t like Newt Gingrich. On the This Week round table this morning, Will began his comments on Gingrich, now a frontrunner, by stating that his candidate “embodies everything disagreeable about modern Washington,” going on to laugh at the idea that Gingrich was hired by Freddie Mac as a “historian,” and, as a final blow, speaking more glowingly of even Rep. Ron Paul than of Gingrich.

Newt is smarter than Will, and Will knows it. But New alienated a lot on people in DC. That he got so much work is testimony to his knowledge of Government. Newt likes to think of himself as the American Churchill. I take his point. Churchill had many faults, personal and otherwise. A dowager one said of “Winston” that he had no antennae. That sure applies to Newt. He had been kicked often enough in the shins, however, that he realized needed to learn how to “take it.” Not as eloquent as Churchill, but more fluent.

I prefer Paul over Romney. He is a smarter version of Harry Truman.

I note that you used the elipses to omit the fact that he couldn’t get tenture at a third rate college.

Getting tenure usually isn’t the problem for white males (or conservatives)....though getting hired often is!. In any case, I’d like to see any evidence (does Newt allege it?) that he was denied tenure at West Georgia College because of his views or race. Please note that he never published his dissertion or an academic book before leaving that position. Did he publish any articles in refereed journals? Curious minds would like to know.

Yep. I for one, though am tired of “nice guys” in the WH. I want someone who tells us what he’s thinking (which is what gets Newt into so much trouble) and one that doesn’t have antennea - or, in his case - a filter between his thoughts and his mouth. I think some of the big mistakes are a result of big ideas. We don’t need Jimmuh Carter in the White House.Newt is a dffient man than RR, but Newt handded him arguably the best strategy in the history of debates with the “are you better off than you were four years ago” attack when he was a FRESHMAN in Congress. That kind of tactician doesn’t come along often.

talks about it in this clip - also says he wont’ carry over people from the old regime...and why.

That was Bush’s biggest mistake. He held over Clinton people and the sabotaged him..

Thanks. I should have checked before just assuming that Will did not have a doctorate. His father was a professor of philosophy at the University of Illinois, according to his Wikipedia biography.

Guys like Howard Baker, Bob Dole, John McLame, Geroge Bush (both) is the reason the GOP never has been a conservative party.

My experience is precisely the opposite - notice I was speaking of the humanities. Getting hired is hard, getting tenure if you are a conservative white male is equally hard.

Newt may have seen the handwriting on the wall and have been using the teaching position to transition into politics. I hold no brief for Newt, but Will, who is the holder of a “celebrity Ph.D.” from Princeton, needs to save his ammunition for someone else. If Newt is all we can get instead of Romney, I will reluctantly support him.

A lot of it has to do with affirmative action rather than candidate's political views. When the women's movement began to pick up steam (late '60s/early '70s) a lot of university departments suddenly noticed they consisted entirely of white males, and vacancies were rare (especially because there had been so much expansion in the 1960s to accommodate baby boomer students--so many of the faculty were fresh out of graduate school). If a department wanted to change, it meant that women would be heavily favored for any openings over men (or minority candidates, but in some fields there were very few of them on the market).

In some cases a department might be inclined to hire the best qualified candidate but would be overruled by administrators who insisted on a female or minority candidate being selected even if they weren't the best qualified.

George Will might be right about where Newt’s wrong,

in some instances.
Maybe even in many instances.

But I still really don’t like George Will.

George Will once made a clumsy pass at his geometry teacher. He turned him down.
