The House this afternoon voted down by 261-165 a balanced budget amendment that its supporters hoped would impose sweeping and permanent austerity upon the United States with massive budget cuts. It needed a two-thirds majority to pass. Click here for more from Think Progress and here our recent coverage.

Except it wouldn’t imposed austerity upon the United States government. It would have given the government license to raise taxes on a massive scale.
That was the reason why it needed to fail.

Yep. THIS balanced budget amendment did not have a spending percentage CAP, meaning that spending could raise and, by the legislation, tax revenue (by whatever means) would have to increase to cover it.

So since the government is always telling us what to do via their different agencies (health, nutrition, etc) then we all should go on a spending spree with money we don’t have? Makes perfect sense. Now to find my Nordstrom’s card, max it out, then request a bailout.

It appears that the homosexual and pedophile commies in the unions aren’t happy with freedom from the slavery of taxation. Oh well, the union types in my extended family are always looking for a way out of paying taxes so I guess it doesn’t really matter to the union types. They’re all crooks and tax deadbeats anyway.

This was a horrible, weak version of a Balanced Budget Amendment. It would've ensured tax hikes, not cuts.
According to Mark Levin, only four Republicans voted against it: Paul Ryan, Louis Gomert, David Dreier and one other.
