Most Americans remember Newt Gingrich as being the former Speaker of the House who led America into the glories of conservative victory, and who guided the Republican Party to electoral success in its 1994 Revolution, which resulted in the economic boon of the Internet era of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Most do not associate Newt, however, with his true record, which speaks volumes about his underlying ideology and motivations. This ideology is especially evident in his 2007 book A Contract with the Earth, which he coauthored with environmentalist Terry Maple.
Gingrichs environmentalism, as is the case with environmentalism in general, is not specifically focused on finding ways to conserve resources and reduce pollution. It is a nuanced, underhanded, and sublimated means of imposing a broader and more ominous set of political reforms. Environmentalism serves as a gateway into the rise of the regulatory state, a more centralized government, higher taxation, increased government spending and deficits, the defeat of the free market, the erosion of national sovereignty, and ultimately the imposition of a global government.
Here is a gem from his book.
In spite of the demonstrated liberal leanings in academia, we have nothing but respect for the nations scientists. They represent Americas best hope to protect the environment. We support a dramatic increase in science and technology research and development because we desperately need to understand global climate change and other environmental phenomena, p. 201.
Leftist Penn State Prof. Michael Mann, Climategate fraudster, would be giddy with that idea.
Here is the audio from Newt on Mark Levin’s show today. He addresses “global warming”. I think all this “man-made global warming” is crap like everyone else here. Newt doesn’t scare me in the slightest on the topic.
Newt famously said after the 94 election that there had been a “sea change” in American politics. In other words, nothing has really changed, we are still on course, it’s just a different elitist group in charge. If Newt wins, we lose, and it’s amazing to me that this has to be said at Free Republic.
“In spite of the demonstrated liberal leanings in academia, we have nothing but respect for the nations scientists.”
That was not unreasonable statement until they were raveled as frauds. I’m sure Newt has come to terms with this as has most of our population.
Gingrich is smart, but corrupt, and therefore fatally flawed if the plan is freedom. Amazing that he has fans here.
“In other words, nothing has really changed, we are still on course, its just a different elitist group in charge”
In (your) other words... Are you a RINO or a RAT supporter?

The have told several of us that many times...
I don’t remember a time that I believed that the earth was warming because of anything humans have done. I don’t remember a time when I would have ever thrown sovereignty, or liberty, or republicanism out with the garbage if we were causing the earth to warm. The battle is with elitists, statists, and the corrupted. Gingrich qualifies on every level.
Gingrich is a RINO. He changes with the wind just like Romney and Perry. I don’t believe any word that comes from any politician’s mouth. Contemporaneous words are useless when you’re trying to ferret out a worthwhile candidate. Look at what they have done and said in the past, ignore what they say to get elected. Gingrich sounds like Reagan now, but Reagan would never have “consulted” with a federal agency that he didn’t think should even exist. Or do you think that it’s the government’s business to lend people money to buy a house?
Gingrich is smart enough to have numerous plants at FR. He is the worst sort of statist imaginable; smart, determined, and a flow chart for everything. I call people of his ilk solutionists, because they a have an idea about everything. The only ideas I’m interested in are rule of law, liberty, justice, and the Constitution. He is late to the party on all of these.
well stated. I agree. Newt is very, very weak on AGW. No matter what he says, he wont let go his belief in “man-made” global warming.
“I dont remember a time that I believed that the earth was warming because of anything humans have done.”
I didn’t either, but I’m an engineer and a scientist. Many people bought in to this crap initially. Newt is not alone...
“Or do you think that its the governments business to lend people money to buy a house?”
As I understand it he advised them of exactly that. That is was a stupid idea and they should not go in that direction. They didn’t take his advice... Sounds like he was right.
Newt would win the debates, but he would lose the election imho. Gingrich carries a lot of baggage, and his wife looks like a freak. I personally don’t care about that, but it’s lunacy to not consider such items when you are choosing. Many people will vote against him for mundane reasons like that. It’s just human nature.
Not exactly true. He advised them, according to him, that people needed to be taught how to better manage their money before they were allowed to obtain a gov-backed mortgage. Great idea, if the plan is to keep the gubmint in the mortgage business... successfully.
vaudine
“Many people will vote against him for mundane reasons like that. Its just human nature.”
Well, until the reincarnation we are stuck with a mortal. Everybody will have baggage. Any republican will be attacked. The ones who are not should be suspect...
