States of mind
On its own, where you live isn't enough to make you depressed. Personal circumstances and genes also play an important role in mental health, so an area that feels like a downer to one person may be home sweet home to another.
That said, mental distress is unusually and persistently common in some states, whether due to economic troubles, lack of access to health care, or other factors.
Using data from federal health agencies, Health.com has identified the 10 states with the highest rates of depression, psychological distress, and other indicators of poor mental health. Here they are, in alphabetical order [for those of you too lazy to click through the slides]:

I agree, LLS! It is perfectly fine with me if outsiders stay away! I enjoy Mississippi just as it is.
It’s only depressing in Shelby County. The rest of Tennessee is just peachy.
LOL...lived in Tennessee for ten years; but never saw any reason to go further west than Knoxville. You want depressing..? Move to New England after living in the south. OMG. Like all the other southerners I meet that are marooned up here; it was a 'family' thing.

What! 55 years ago it was depressing! Tar paper shacks, log cabins, poor folks everywhere. I hated it here as a child.
Since then We’ve got Walmart and other companies and the NW corner is doing GREAT!
Oklahoma is also OK! I lived in Tulsa for several years.
The person who scribbled this list must have only been to the Arkansas Delta region which votes Dem and to the remote panhandle of Oklahoma.

I would make that 23, by including Connecticut which is on the Long Island Sound (salt water, almost part of the Atlantic Ocean).
You're right; I miscounted. Although the salt line of the Delaware River does sometimes go as far north as Philadelphia, and even aircraft carriers make it up to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for service, I opted to not count PA (which still qualifies as a Great Lakes State). For some reason when I did the math in my head what should have been 24-1 became 23-1.

Tennessee likely makes the list for one reason. It is the sinus allergy Capitol. Allergies mean you have too take meds for it. Meds that can make you depressed.
I had the same experience when I moved to KY. My Boston accent didn’t go over well. Thankfully, I married a wonderful woman from Laurel County who’s “fine as a frog’s hair split three ways”, and has added much to my lexicon...lol.
Now my accent only resurfaces when I watch the Sox or drink some Sam Adams. Or both. Most often both.
