Cain complains that Cuba policy questions in Florida are “gotchas”

Really? That could be a valid complaint from a candidate stumping for votes in places like Iowa and New Hampshire, where voters probably don’t have too much concern over the “wet foot dry foot” policy of accepting Cuban refugees. When a candidate goes to Florida and explicitly campaigns in the Cuban-American community to get them, those questions seem more pertinent than “gotcha” — especially when the topic at hand was Barack Obama’s “foggy foreign policy”:

Cain, who last week stumbled over questions about what he would do in Libya, seemed to know little about Cuba. His campaign kept reporters at bay, and when asked about the Cuban Adjustment Act and the so-called wet-foot, dry-foot policy, Cain seemed stumped. The policy allows Cuban immigrants who have made it to US soil to stay.

“Wet foot, dry foot policy?” Cain asked. His press handlers interrupted as Cain diverted his course and ducked back into the building. Later, when he emerged, he was asked again by another reporter. Cain wouldn’t answer. …

Cain, though, wouldn’t talk to reporters there, either. A FOX reporter asked Cain what he thought of President Obama’s easing of travel restrictions to Cuba. Cain said that was a “gotcha question.”

Yeah, even I had to think about what the reporter was asking by "wet foot, dry foot." I think he's talking about a Clintonian amendment to the laws concerning Cuban refugees; wherein, refugees found in American waters are returned to Cuba, but those who touch dry land in America are allowed to stay in America.

Had the reporter framed the question properly, I'm sure Cain would have answered it. But, the question was purposely designed to be vague so as to be another "gotcha'" question---much like Charlie Gibson's "Bush Doctrine" question with Sarah Palin.

The tactic is well known: Create a nebulous question and then act all superior and cr*p when the candidate isn't quite sure what the hə11 you are asking. Then, play it over and over and over again in the guise of "fair and balanced" reporting.

This, of course, exposes the obvious: FOX News wants to make sure Romney gets the ticket. That's why they are working so hard to make Cain, a NON-POLITICIAN look bad (and what the hə11 did anyone expect from a non-politician, anyway when it comes to foreign policy?).

Cheers

To all of you now attacking Cain on “foreign policy.” We know you got the talking point memos on using hyperbole to make him look bad. You already failed on the sex allegation issues

We don’t give a dam about MINOR issues and “pauses” on foreign policy. We are more concerned with America and saving it from the path the Liberals and their RINO allies have put us on. So you can tell all the others in your boiler rooms working the social media sites that you’re wasting your time. We don’t trust you. We do not think your one of us; you’re only making yourselves more petty and irrelevant.

Cain would be impossible to watch in a presidential debate. 2 painful hours of blank stares and fumbling through answers. Didn’t we have enough of that with Bush.

I support Newt.

The only problem with gotcha questions is if they ‘get ya.’

Apparently these did.

Attacking the premise of the questions is something Newt is really good at.

Cain... not so much.

Tell me again, how is this a screw up? You wanted what? Newt to lie so you could call him a liar? No one who served as speaker of the house can claim to be a washington outsider and do so with any credibility.

How do you view this as a screw up?

I have always known the POLICY too.

I have never heard it called “wet foot, dry foot”.

[Herman Cain] would surround himself with experts in his cabinet selections.

I'd like to think that he would do a better job with his cabinet selections than I think he did with Mark Block and his campaign staff. They don't appear to have prepared Cain overall, and they don't appear to prepare Cain for the day-to-day normalcies of campaigning.

Block, in particular, mangled the harassment kerfuffle. Letting Cain publicly accuse one man by name of being the source of the leak? Stating that accuser Karen Kraushaar’s son worked at Politico?

And what was Cain thinking saying he would ask Kissinger to be his Secretary of State? What was that? Kissinger will be 90 when the next President takes office.

I was a Cain supporter. I supported him right here on FR. I'm back to square one, because I now believe Herman Cain is in over his head.

Maybe you should switch over to Perry then, John.

He’s the only one with a record of conservatism that he’s actually implemented.

Totally agree. When I know more about something than a candidate, it isn’t reassuring to me.

“I am not voting for the foreign policy expert. I am voting for the man who knows how to lead, and who has character.”

That’s great, you tell me how you believe Cain is the candidate with those qualities? I’ll let the Character issue go for now, please tell me how you feel being a business leader means you will be an effective political leader.

Given in the entire history of the United States, not one person has been elected president who did not either have Military Service, Government Service or both before getting elected, what makes you think that Business Leadership translates to governmental leadership? They are completely different beasts, and anyone who has been around both of them will tell you.

To presume a sucessful Politician will be a successful Business Man, just because he was a successful politician is crazy. The inverse is also true, to presume that a successful Business man will be a successful politician is also true.

Seems to my thinking, if Cain success in business directly transferred to politics, he wouldn’t have a political background running for the White House, with nothing but a history of failed political campaigns.

Cain’s a nice enough guy, but leadership in the political arena he has definitely not shown any aptitude for to date.

Since you said that 3 times, I’ll answer you. Mark Davis (local talk show in Dallas) had a guy on this morning who was a total Newt supporter and Mark remarked that Newt’s baggage is already out there and has been cussed and discussed.

Nobody will be able to blind side him with something new.

He’d be my second choice after Perry.

When a candidate goes to FL, the very first 10 minutes of prep should contain a mention of the well-known “wet feet dry feet” policy.
A conservative who hasn’t heard of it and needs informing, is probably a newly minted conservative.
A true (steadfast and well-grounded) conservative should also be ready with an opinion of said policy, and he shouldn’t need advisors to supply it.
Instead, he calls a substantive and entirely appropriate question a “gotcha.”
At this point we are belaboring the obvious, to point out Cain’s deficiency of experience and knowledge. His supporters are mainlining koolaid now.

should read is also not true.

Being successful in business as your only qualification has never once lead anyone to win the white house.. nor has it guaranteed success at other levels of government by those who have tried, in fact, when I think back on my lifetime most folks coming to even the HOUSE trying to get in with only a business background, the overwhelming majority fail.

His time spent as CEO of the NRA as well as serving on boards of many major corporations is the political/government parallel in the business world.

Maybe you should care a little bit.

Cain may have character (I think he does) but what evidence is there that he knows how to lead?

Easy for bossman to lead if he’s running a country, but where else has he led?

I meant running a company, of course.

Guess I’m not qualified to be president with that slip of the keys, but somehow I already suspected that.

Not knowing China has been a nuclear power for decades made Cain a nonstarter with me.

I don’t expect an expert knowledge base - but come on!

Anyone who I would call ‘well informed’ would know that.

Cain is not very well informed.

What do you think of the modus vivendi reached by America's charge d'affairs and the Afghanistan government via shuttle diplomacy?
