If Halifax NC Students Skip School, Parents Could Face Jail
Education News ^ | November 16, 2011 | B.A. Birch

Chief District Court Judge Brenda Branch has ruled that Halifax County (NC) parents are going to be held accountable for their children’s school attendance — and that could mean jail if they are not deemed to have made an effort to promote school attendance, writes the Daily Herald.

The proposal is a collaborative effort between the Halifax County court system, three public school systems and county agencies that are looking to address truancy issues for students in the district.

It was announced this week at the Halifax County Community Child Protection Team meeting. Branch, along with District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey delivered the message as many heavy hitters in the Halifax County law and public education fields rallied behind the proposal.

“There was much confusion around who’s responsibility it was to handle truancy that some children were missing from 40 to 80 days from school without suffering any consequences,” said Arnethia Nicholson, chair of the team and Halifax County Department of Social Services employee.

The combined efforts of the school systems, Halifax County court system, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Social Services and The Community Child Protection Team resulted in the Tri-District Truancy Procedure, which could ultimately land a parent in front of a judge.

Then I will report for all to see.

You mean report what you choose to report.

Link please. I will give them a call to find out.

I already stated it. I live in the district, you don't.

While I often disagree with you, and question some of the things you post I don't believe I have ever stooped so low as to call you a liar - which is exactly what you have called me here with this post.

As do I. I fully support those parents that home school...they should have the right.

LOL, I think you meant "skool."

Whatever, people like you are just annoyances anyway and don't take up any place in my life.

And yet here you are, on every one and all of these threads, being "polite" and caring about others' health.

And telling everyone there's something wrong where they live? What kind of juvenile snark is that?

I didn’t ask their opinion, they read it, as both enjoy reading FR.

If you can’t show that your hated public school system does not turn out well rounded children what am I to think? Hm? The next rational question is can it be good?

You, my dear, are the one with the personal problem, not me.

Is that how far the bar has been lowered?

When I was applying for colleges, "well-rounded" was a euphemism even I could understand.

I love the “parents” who are willing to advance social engineering experiments with their children as test subjects.

But don't whip those little gnomes if they give you a hard time when you "encourage" them to attend school or you will go to jail.

That isn’t what I meant but I agree with you that it isn’t a good idea to use our children for social engineering. Funny thing is that homeschoolers got accused of this in the beginning.
Of course they had history on their side.

I do understand where you are coming from, I just don’t totally agree with you. That’s all. No more, no less.

We are no where near what anyone would consider rich, but could probably afford the tuition to send her to one of the local private schools. There are only 2 that currently offer high school and I wouldn’t want her in either of them. They both have worse records for criminal arrests and dropout rates than our local public high school. 5 arrests at the private school last month, one at the public school. 4 more at the private school so far this month, none at the public school.

What don’t you agree with? That government should have less control over our educational decisions?

But my personal opinion of home schooling parents is that they are selfish, plus they're running from a problem that affects us all, as opposed to helping to fix it.

There are some who are, no doubt about that, however the vast majority are not, Unfortunately the few who do match your description are generally the ones that post on threads like this, the vast majority do not as they shy away from the rabid idiots.

We’re way, way past the point where a small number of parents or concerned individuals can change the public school system. Perhaps in some small, very small towns or rural areas, that are solidly conservative, it might be possible - a little.

There are so many reasons why they cannot be changed I can only enumerate a few:

1. Federally mandated crap.

2. Textbooks that are larded with ultra leftist garbage.

3. The majority of teachers are not conservative at all, teachers’ colleges are notorious for being ultra lefitst.

4. Administrators are even worse.

5. GLSEN and other pro-homosexual garbage in public schools - good luck getting rid of them. “Days of Silence” is the tip of the iceberg.

6. The biggest teachers’ union is nothing but a vile nest of hardcore ultra leftists.

7. The philosophy and methodology of public school instruction is meant to create drones and sap the vitality and desire to learn from students, as well as make rational and critical thinking stunted. It’s the content and the method.

8. Public schools’ purpose is ultimately to inculcate a secular humanist world view.

The examples I’ve read on FR of parents not being notified about controversial outings, assemblies and classes is huge - transsexuals are fine, but NO mention of God. God is verboten, learning about sodomy is mandatory. And Globull warming, and twisted history, and on and on.

Discretion is the better part of valor, and public schools can only be fixed when the Department of Education is eliminated and eveyrthing to do with educated goes back not just to the state, but the local communities. Then people will have a say in how their children are educated (other than taking them out and educating themselves while still paying tons of money into the system they don’t use, which is abhorrent); and not until then.

That’s Mrs. bitch to you.

You obviously need to speak to the person to whom I responded.

Unlike you, I do attempt to keep my posts appropriate. Also unlike others, I don’t hit the abuse button for totally out of line and inappropriate comments.

I may not be so forgiving a next time.

On "every one and all" ????????????

I suggest you check your facts before making such a blatant false statement such as that.

And telling everyone there's something wrong where they live? What kind of juvenile snark is that?

Nothing juvenile or snarky about it. The other person was complaining about the lack of educational choices where she lived, I just commented upon those statements. I chose to move where I would have better educational choices than where I had previously lived. WOW - I had a choice, ain't it grand?

You’re in a state with a teacher’s union, I’m not. Please speak for yourself and not everyone.

I’ve seen a couple of folks who have posted about the problems you claim are huge in public schools. Huge would mean posts amounting to at least as many as this thread has generated - I seriously doubt you can prove such a dubious statement.

You don’t like public schools, that’s fine with me. Others disagree with you, that should be fine with you.

Wow, you’re a bitch.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!

There's the money line right there, folks. We knew it would come...it was only a matter of time.

Just like the old saying:
...You can take the Badass out of the Trailerpark
...You'll never take the Trailerpark out of the Badass

Yep, I was a little skeptical with your earlier Post #78: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2808841/posts?page=78#78

Afterall, the moniker "Trailerpark Badass" just didn't fit with "I am already building a school" and "The children pray regularly throughout the day." Cuss words and praying? Oh well, you did mention a private joke or something earlier. So, I figured I'd let it slide.

But, calling Gabz that name just confirmed my skepticism.

You're a phony.
