Chief District Court Judge Brenda Branch has ruled that Halifax County (NC) parents are going to be held accountable for their children’s school attendance — and that could mean jail if they are not deemed to have made an effort to promote school attendance, writes the Daily Herald.
The proposal is a collaborative effort between the Halifax County court system, three public school systems and county agencies that are looking to address truancy issues for students in the district.
It was announced this week at the Halifax County Community Child Protection Team meeting. Branch, along with District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey delivered the message as many heavy hitters in the Halifax County law and public education fields rallied behind the proposal.
“There was much confusion around who’s responsibility it was to handle truancy that some children were missing from 40 to 80 days from school without suffering any consequences,” said Arnethia Nicholson, chair of the team and Halifax County Department of Social Services employee.
The combined efforts of the school systems, Halifax County court system, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Social Services and The Community Child Protection Team resulted in the Tri-District Truancy Procedure, which could ultimately land a parent in front of a judge.
Sounds to me like you live in a really bad area. You might wish to consider moving.

Or pointing out that government schools trash every First Amendment human right would be called “attacking others”. ( No one has ever provided a link where this is not so.)
Or pointing out that government schools are a socialist entitlement be called “attacking others”. ( No one has ever provided a link to a government owned K-12 school that is not socialist-funded)
Or asking the question, “Is the above ‘good’?”, be called attacking others.
Honey bun, if you feel that these global questions about the universal nature of government schools is “attacking others” , maybe it is time you examined your own heart.
When I first moved here in 2003 there was one private school in the county, 40 miles from me. Now there are at least 6, one being 3 miles from me.

Well?....That would indicate to me that parents are waking up to the danger of sending their children into godless socialist schools, or, that the government schools are deteriorating at a rapid pace.
The more children who attend fully private schools ( not charters) the less support there is for socialist schooling in the voting booth.
That is wonderful. My dad is a pastor and when I was growing up he pastored two churches that had Christian schools. The churches ALWAYS supported the Christian schools. We weren’t able to offer salaries as good as the public schools. The church helped to subsidize student tuitions and give scholarships.
On the other hand, we had a preschool that actually made a hefty profit. People are used to paying for preschool services.
The government does not have a monopoly on the preschool market.
Actually, I live in one of reddest counties in a very red state. But.....
The schools are still godlessly secular. They are a socialist entitlement. They trash First Amendment Rights like any other socialist K-12 school in the nation.
The parents here are very responsible. Most do an excellent job of afterschooling and the socialist schools take full credit for the hard work of the parents, private tutors, and the kid's work in the home.

My 13 yo daughter and her 14yo homeschooled friend who is also here actually laughed at this post of yours. They both think you are nuts. I did attempt to correct them in regard to their lack of respect toward you, who is obviously older than they are, but they reminded me you made the comment on a public forum and so are fair game.
If you can't show that the above are not a fundamental problem with government socialist schooling then what am I to think? Hm? The next rational question is, “Is this good? Is it good for children or for the future of our nation?”
As for asking 13 and 14 year olds their opinion,...Well, Jimmy Carter did that with his little girl, Amy, and Obama has done it with his kids, too!

I trust myself and my husband to make the best educational decisions for our daughter.
The state does not offer free education, we all pay for it. I would be more than happy to pay tuition for the education she is receiving, I know I couldn’t get the equivalent in the private schools near where we used to live.
We chose the public school system we did because it offers a better education than even any of the private schools where we used to live. Home schooling just didn’t work for us.
I fully support the choice you made on educating your children, why will you not support the choice I made for my child?
I fully support your right to choose the education that you want for your daughter. What I am trying to get you to realize is that none of us really have many options because of compulsory laws. They offer all of us a few options with strings attached and we have been lulled into believing we have freedom to direct our children’s education. I am glad that you are happy with one of the options the government has given you. What if you were not happy and your options were very limited? Wouldn’t you rather have the freedom EVEN if you are happy with your current situation. Wouldn’t you like everyone to have the freedom to make the choices that work for their family? I am glad that I am able to school my children at home. However the government intrusion into my home is unacceptable. I am not sure why you are willing to accept it even if you are happy with your daughter’s education.
If you had to pay the full cost of your daughters tuition, you likely wouldnt be able to afford it unless you are rich. You pay a portion via property tax as do the rest of the US taxpayers. It is free for your use. IOW, you pay no more than anyone else for your use of it.
Once again we are in total agreement.
My daughter is currently in 8th grade and I have gone up against the school board more than once. Sometimes I've won, sometimes I haven't, but I don't just take it. My point being, parents can make a difference.

As do I. I fully support those parents that home school...they should have the right. And, I'd go so far as to say I'm not opposed to vouchers for them if they've taken on this huge responsibility.
But my personal opinion of home schooling parents is that they are selfish, plus they're running from a problem that affects us all, as opposed to helping to fix it.
You're last statement sums it up well. Home schooling parents could give a hoot about those "left behind".

God has called me first to raise my children. I am accountable to Him for the way I raise them. I do not homeschool them because I am running from a problem. I homeschool them because I believe that is what I am supposed to do. Formal schooling was never an option for us personally.
I care very deeply about the kids in the public school. We have several programs that provide help to them. We are renovating the old high school gym for them and will begin providing tutoring in the afternoons. So you can keep your uninformed opinion about what homeschooling parents care about to yourself.
Even if it was an option to put our kids in school, I won't sacrifice my children to a school system that graduates half of it's students in some desperate hope that I might be able to help from the inside.
