(Reuters) - The top U.S. Catholic bishop said on Monday that a child sex abuse scandal at Penn State University "opens a wound" within the church, which remains scarred from its own similar controversies and cover-ups.
"We know what you're going through," Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, told a news conference in Baltimore where hundreds of bishops have gathered for their national meeting.

Swiftly = 30 years later.
I’d say just as swiftly.

What happens is that whenever you get a strong machismo culture Those macho priests.
And the Boy Scouts too.
Is is not "machismo" It is about predators willfully joining organizations to which children are entrusted without much thought.
Look at the predators in public schools and summer camps which are about as anti-"machismo" as you can get.
BTW, Sandusky's victims did not come from a "football camp" i.e. a place were young boys who want to become better football players go, but from The Second Mile which is a "non-profit organization for children who need additional support and who would benefit from positive human contact."
I'm confident in saying that "macho" sports camps -- which inclined towards homophobia back in the day -- are much safer than touchy-feely "positive human contact" camps.

Dear Siena Dreaming,
The president of the US bishops’ conference isn't the superior to any bishop in the United States. The bishops’ conference is an organizing entity that cannot impose any of its decisions on any ordinary (head bishop) of any diocese. It's not much more than a talking society, a coffee klatch, in terms of formal power over bishops. It has its own forms of power and influence, but authority over bishops isn't one of them.
The superior to the ordinary (governing bishop) of a see (diocese) is the pope, and even there, that's attenuated. There is no level of “administration” between the bishop of a diocese and the pope.

I see FR tolerates hatred of the Catholic Church. It’s no wonder the place gets labeled a hate site.
Please tell us, Tsgt, the rates of child pedophilia among other Christian sects and religions?
The last reports I saw presented comparable rates of pedophilia among Protestant and higher rates in muslim groups.
A ping to Outlaw Woman after I noticed her comments yesterday on Freepers attacking each other.

Read the material again. Penn State victims were as young as seven years old.

If Penn State allowed their football coaches to marry this never would have happened.
By the way; since this is obviously an issue close to your benevolent and altruistic heart, why didn't the DA in Boston indict Bernard Law?

At least you are consistent with your excuse, "Don't blame us, everyone rapes children!" Perhaps you could think a little a realize the focus is due to leadership covering for the pedophiles and said leadership not being removed?
I know it's hard to see past those rosary colored glasses but please try...

Is an indictment required for the church to act? Even Law stated that he failed.

Irish Catholics Call For Cardinal Laws Resignation, Following Clergy Abuse Report
http://www.wbur.org/2010/02/10/irish-priests-followup
To keep Cardinal Bernard Law in the position he holds would suggest the papacy does not understand the principles of accountability, said Sean OConaill, acting coordinator of Voice of the Faithful in Ireland.
After leaving Boston, Law was named to the prominent position of archpriest of the St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome. He also serves on several Vatican boards and committees and he participated in the 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict. But he hasnt been seen in Boston since he left.
Youll notice when the pope came to Boston last year, all these American Cardinals from Rome came with the Pope on the plane but not Cardinal Law, said Father Walter Cuenin, who was among the group of Boston area priests who first called on Law to step down in response to the clergy abuse crisis. He could not have been on that plane. So in some ways I think even in Rome they recognize its a delicate situation.

Tsgt, before you throw another one of your stones, would you please inform us of any and all immoral acts you have ever committed? Once your list is complete, you can then lecture us about others’ immorality.
We’ll give you plenty of time to examine your conscience. The timer starts now...

You confuse throwing stones with holding people and organizations accountable. One can assume from your reply that you would not prosecute or hold an individual accountable who raped your child since you have sin in your life?
There's a moral absolutes ping list here on FR. You might want to ask the list members for their sins as well...

The difference between Penn State and the Catholic church is that Penn State swiftly removed the enablers
Swiftly? There is evidence that they've known about this for nearly 15 years! They only moved "swiftly" when they made national and international news 24-7 for a full week.
You just can't resist, can you? Here is clear evidence that pedophilia on a wide scale with complete (and continuing) cover up goes on in institutions other than the Catholic Church and all you can do is continue to attack Catholics.
Just admit that you were wrong and that homosexual abuse and cover up is in no way unique to the Catholic Church. We'll forgive you. That's what we do.
Posting rants like this only makes you look like a Catholic-hating kook.
