Emily Gets Her Gun MILLER: Taking the D.C. gun safety class
The Washington Times ^ | 14 November, 2011 | Emily Miller

It took weeks of research and dozens of phone calls to finally find a suitable place to take the required gun safety class to register a handgun in the nation's capital. Thanks to a referral from Atlantic guns, I found Donna Worthy -- even though she's not on the list of certified instructors given out by Metropolitan Police Department.

Mrs. Worthy is a retired Baltimore police firearms training instructor. She is now the owner of Worth-A-Shot , which is located in Millersville, Maryland, about a 45 minute drive from Northwest D.C., without traffic. When I pulled up to her office, I immediately liked that it had a bright and clearly marked storefront.

Inside, Mrs. Worthy and two other employees greeted me, wearing uniforms with the company logo. I’d talked to a lot of possible instructors for this course, and they all taught in their homes and seemingly without any business structure. In contrast, Worth-A-Shot is a real, professional, storefront business. Unlike the option of taking the class in some stranger’s basement, I felt safe.

This safety issue wouldn’t be a concern for most men, but for many women, it feels as if the city forces us into uncomfortable and possibly unsafe environment to take this "safety" class. Clearly, the D.C. politicians who came up with this half-baked process weren't concerned about women or their particular needs. Fortunately, Mrs. Worthy’s well-run business addresses these concerns.

Mrs. Worthy led me to her large classroom, with rows of desks and the course lesson on overhead projector. She taught my class herself, but she has a team of male and female instructors for the various classes she offers.

Her specific methodology had been honed through years of teaching. The first thing she asked me was why I wanted the gun. “Self defense,” I told

Hey, why not. Guys might be comfortable with home offices having basement shooting galleries, but women like things like this Worth-A-Shot. More power to the pistol packing mamas. Takes all kinds to make a world.

Get your finger out of the trigger area Donna.

Looks like she's got her index finger extended straight alongside the trigger guard, just like she's supposed to.

If you don't do that, your grip shifts when you move your finger back to the trigger area, and you're not in position to fire the firearm or even hold it securely.

As an instructor, and a researcher/educator, the whole issue of how women “feel” is so serious that I keep a recording of all time they spend in my presence.

At all times, one must remember that the present laws were written by true FemiNazi personalities, passed by Liberal democratic politicians, and that said laws effectively removed the historic requirement for proof.

“Her feelings” can now become a major legal cost or even prison time.

Mr. SD deals with this possibility, and even affords the opportunity for profitable counter-suits based upon what was really said and what really happened. Just remember to have the required signage about recordings clearly posted.

As I use video to allow playback of the student’s shooting, this is no problem for me.

PS Given that we are living in “Queer Nation”, such electronic precautions preclude any sex harassment claims from ‘gays’ as well.

PPS ‘Tis a pity America has such laws, but caution and precautions are the necessities of today’s educators.

She had me practice not holding all the pressure in my dominant right hand, but to balance evenly. “Let me see your right hand,” she said. I held out my palm, and she laughed at the telltale red waffle marks. Also, she showed me to hold the gun by pulling backward with my right hand, while pushing forward with my left.

I'm confused as the grip.

Geez...I thought Massachusetts was bad. Getting equipped in DC is the pits by comparison.

You are looking at her right hand.

Look at the left hand index finger.

“She had me practice not holding all the pressure in my dominant right hand, but to balance evenly.”

That is the Isosceles.

“hold the gun by pulling backward with my right hand, while pushing forward with my left.”

That is the Weaver.

If she is right-handed,
she should be pulling with her left hand
and pushing with her right hand for stability.

Not a real clear view - seems to be curled and on the outside of the trigger guard, though. And of course on the wrong end to exert any pressure on the trigger anyhow.

Better there than past the naughty end, as it would be if her hand were further from the trigger guard.

I would tend to have my left hand cupped under the base of the right hand, myself, as providing faster transition to a Weaver stance. But I don't have any huge alarm bells going off here.

“hold the gun by pulling backward with my right hand, while pushing forward with my left.”

She reports it backwards if she is right-hand dominant (which she says earlier).

In the Weaver, you push forward with the dominant hand and pull back with the supporting hand.

That sounds backwards to me too. Dominant hand (or the hand that goes with the dominant eye, if you’re unlucky) locked forward, non-dominant hand pulling back. (Co-workers looking at me funny.)

You're missing an important point;
It is a non-firing model.

Bad habit yes...but no immediate danger of a AD from that piece.

It is reported incorrectly.

With the strong hand holding the gun
pushing forward,
the weak hand is pulling back for stability.

This is true in either a Weaver
or Chapman(modified Weaver) stance.

All this analysis of stance and dominant hand and how should she hold it taking into account this and that and blah blah blah.

Just grab the gun, sorter wiggle it around til its comfy and shoot!

Thats how I do it. Of course, I'm a terrible shot...

...But I take pride in the fact that I'm a terrible shot who shoots the same way Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett did. Instinct :)

This is more of a critique of the instructor,
as the student has come away with incorrect information
and poor learning. This will place the student into jeopardy
in a critical situation. This could be litigated.
