The Gingrich Comeback
The Wall Street Journal ^ | NOVEMBER 14, 2011 | STEPHEN MOORE

Posted on 11/14/2011 4:30:15 PM PST by presidio9

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich continues to surge in the polls. Last week a CBS poll had Herman Cain at 18%, with Mitt Romney and Mr. Gingrich tied at 15%. Even more impressive was the latest McClatchy-Marist poll, which had Mr. Romney at 23%, Mr. Gingrich at 19% and Mr. Cain at 17%. A little over a month ago, Mr. Gingrich was barely above 5% in any poll.

Is the former Georgia congressman simply the latest flavor of the month in the wake of the Herman Cain sexual-harassment allegations, or can he actually win? In an interview with me this weekend, he notes that "after every debate I keep rising in the polls." He sees at least 70% of voters looking for an alternative to Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee. Mr. Gingrich says conservative voters "know I am the one who would be best to debate President Obama."

One Gingrich strategy that seems to be paying off is to remind voters of his record as speaker. He says he was the one who was able to persuade then-President Clinton "to sign a balanced budget, welfare reform and tax cuts." He says he inherited a 10-year forecast of $2.7 trillion in deficits, but that when he left Congress the forecast was "more than $2 trillion in surpluses" and "voters would love to see that happen again."

Mr. Gingrich has clearly appeared presidential in the GOP debates, and he says focus groups almost always "pick me as the debate winner." Mr. Gingrich's campaign suffered some major setbacks earlier this year after

Im reminded of sooooo many election cycles ( Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson, (insert name here))

every year we trip all over ourselves seeking the next Reagan and prattle amongst our purest selves... meanwhile reality leaves us all behind and we sit and bitch about how the bad guys win again... Look, if Newt has the skills and can survive the coming news cycles that will surely come with the most damning aspects of his life - then he deserves it - I want Cain to survive - but he couldn't roll with the predictable punches. Perry melted down in the glare of the camera lights; Palin decided to take a walk... at the end of the day this is all S**T that the GP nom is gonna have to deal with. If the last man standing is Romeny... then it either THAT or 4 more years of socialism.... so we can crry in our pillows til 2016 and wonder where the New Reagan is... but meanwhile our nation suffers...

They agree on nearly nothing. Levin is opposed to all that Newt has done in his political career. Levin is an American Patriot, while Noot is a “global citizen.”

Just to cherry-pick one example: Levin never goes a program without reminding us that Bill Clinton was impeached.

I know my history, and when I post it you will accuse me of character assassination, because history of the last 30 years solidly proves that Ginrich is a slimy slithering traitorious snake.

I'll wait until you have followed the my direction to you in post 53, and see if you can still draw that laughable conclusion without feeling ridiculous.

Let's start with "the only chance we'll ever have in our lifetime to dismantle Obamacare."

You really think that perennial deal-maker Newt would dismantle Obamacare, when he supported the individual mandate as late as May of THIS year?

Gingrich Backs Obamacare's Individual Mandate Requiring Health Insurance

Now THAT'S laughable.

Then so be it...both the GOP and the country will deserve what they get.

Levin has on many occasions made the point that newt protedted Clinton by letting him be impeached on sex rather than China-gate.

Actually, Newt's position was that individuals could opt out of any individual mandate by posting a bond, but I agree that he could have done a better job of explaining himself earlier this year. He opposed Hillarycare in 1996 specifically because the individual mandate was unconstitutional. He has said consistently (in just about every debate for that matter) that the first item on his legislative agenda as president will be repealing Obamacare. He was one of the first proponents of tort reform as the more logical alternative to affordable care. He has been a champion for the ability to purchase insurance across state lines. And a lot of these positions are his ideas. Like it or not, we have a health care problem in this country. I don't have one. I'm assuming you don't have one. But the electorate perceives that we DO in fact have one. And instead of simply replaying platitudes, Gingrich is offering solutions, and the price for that is that nitwits like yourself get to take potshots and help make Romney the nominee. Now, if your belief is that Gingrich is a lying, I can respect that opinion, even if I disagree, but it is a fact that he says he intends to work to repeal Obamacare. Given that it would require a Republican majority to do so, there is no chance that it would be replaced with some other form of individual mandate, even if he preferred it.

I listen to a lot of Mark Levin, and I honestly have never heard him make that accusation. I'll take your word for it, but I stand by my point that Levin has no real problem with Gingrich. Unfortunately, Mark Levin does not make transcripts available online, and if you do a Google search of "Mark Levin Gingrich" you get an overload of coverage on the Paul Ryan incident. The best I can do is a youtube of a June 2010 interview. Its short, but congenial IMO. Incidently, the first thing he says he'd do as president it repeal Obamacare.

Newt has a perfect record of never doing anything he said he’d do.

I really don't care who the nominee is, as long as it isn't Romney or that other no-name RINO.

Everything that has happened, BTW, is predictable as clockwork. As Newt takes a clear lead, as Cain has in the past weeks, expect scandal from the Left to try to bring him down, too.

And those abandoning Cain because of the allegations are like skittish sheep, letting the enemy set the agenda.

Again, though, I really don't care who we send up, as long as he is solid and not Mitt Romney.

This is transparently refutable. Refer to the helpful Twain quote (learn it, know it, live it), and stop wasting my time.

The differences here are that Gingrich's "scandals" are not knew, will make less of a splash, and are more easily explained because he won't have trashy women offering different scenarios to his story. Assuming nothing new emerges, that is.

“I’m liking Newt more and more with each debate.”

No doubt Newt’s a good debater, but he’s going to have a tough time explaining the $one million Tiffany debt. In fact, I was telling my husband, if he spends like that so frivolously, what will he do with the tax dollars we pay him?

Not so much the first one: I’m not convinced a high school math teacher should be marrying a student a decade younger than her. As for the 2nd marriage, I can’t speak except to say that they fail about 67% of the time. It’s even worse for 3rd marriages, about 75%. With Newt at about 68 years old now, I doubt that will happen for him.

The bottom line, though, is that you are correct. Every infidelity injures.

Newt is a snake! He's not a RAT, but he is a SNAKE. Beware, and for all of those that like Newt, then you'd better be prepared to accept the things in the past that he has supported, and those in the future that you know will likely go the way he's going to take them...

Explain to us your perfect candidate, and the date of his/her immaculate birth.

Seriously. There is not a single candidate without multiple warts. Explain your perfect candidate...

...remembering that if you don't plan to stage a coup, your 'perfect' candidate will have to win a national election.

I'm writing in Sarah Palin, and then will sleep comfortably that night...

You bet...you might want to look in the mirror, smug sanctimoniousness does not look good on you.

We'll have four more years of Obama, but you'll be 'pure.'
