Washington (CNN) A new national survey of Republicans indicates that it's basically all tied up between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with Gingrich on the rise and businessman Herman Cain falling due to the sexual harassment allegations he's been facing the past two weeks.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday, 24% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say Romney is their most likely choice for their party's presidential nominee with Gingrich at 22%. Romney's two-point advantage is well within the survey's sampling error.
While the level of support has pretty much stayed the same for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, Gingrich has seen his support jump 14 points since October.
The poll also indicates that 14 percent back Cain, down 11 points from last month. Four women have alleged that Cain sexually harassed them during the late 1990s when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Cain denies the allegations.
"Cain is struggling with the charges of sexual harassment, and while most Republicans tend to dismiss those charges, roughly four in 10 Republicans think this is a serious matter and tend to believe the women who made those charges," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign. Among the general public, Cain has a bigger credibility problem - 50% of all Americans say they tend to believe the women and only a third say they believe Cain.
"Not surprisingly, there is a big gender gap on this matter - women say this is a serious matter and believe the women,

And by the exact same freepers who disemboweled Bachmann thinking they were helping a lady who sadly...opted out
lol
this poll shows Perry at 12% !!!!
ROFL
right. something went haywire when they did this poll, I would throw it in the garbage.
Who is the grumpy old white haired old boy GOP Establishment guy in the race being feverishly puffed up by Fox News the same way McCain was in 2007-2008?
Just a counter to your argument about Cain. Do you think a person has to be a master on every issue to be president or be a master at sound judgement and decision-making. There is no one on this stage or any election in my lifetime that is perfectly competent on every issue or that has a sound answer on anything thrown there way. If they do, it is more about rhetoric.
Cain can win if he shows effective decision making across the many areas of experience over his career. I am not 100% for Cain, but lean there as of today. I am impressed with Newt’s stature in these debates and have always been a fan, but also troubled by his last couple years as Speaker and a number of odd positions over the past few years. Still considering him, though, because he certainly has a vast knowledge and experience set. If nothing else, he was in charge when there actually was a balanced budget out of congress. There is something to be said about that.
Actually, you don’t know what I mean.
I could care less if Cain leads CNN. OR MSNBC. I think it’s funny he is leading the Politico poll and I could care less that he is running that.
Some polls are liberals telling us who they want to run against Obama.
Cain is doing just fine.
You should be asking yourself why Cain has never lead in the CNN poll.
“The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign”
Stacking the deck anyone? Other polls have shown 75 percent of Republicans believe that Cain is innocent. So clearly this is a push poll.
If you really don't think a man like Herman who has the formidible work history the current pResident could not even hope to have can do a so much better job than barry the commie bassturd, then you are not thinking rationally.
In fact, besides Herman Cain, Rick Perry (he's a governor for gosh sake!), Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachmann, and even Rick Santorum could step into the job and do great leadership and it have the shape and impact of conservative principles. The CFS serves obama and Rominy, not the candidates I listed.
And just why did CNN poll any adults instead of Likely GOP Primary voters?
You would think these starry-eyed Newt boosters were all born in 1998!
The MSM is not pushing him out of the goodness of their hearts.
And just why did CNN poll any adults instead of Likely GOP Primary voters?
First they smear him and they accuse us of smears. That’s how it works, and sadly they’d rather let the Democrats choose their ‘acceptable’ list of candidates.
But it’s all good, because it means that Romney is our nominee. Well done folks. :)
My top 4 picks:
Gingrich
Cain
Gingrich/Cain
Cain/Gingrich
Obviously, SEX will be at the top of their agenda.
The CNN poll sure looks like an outlier to me; but I couldn’t begin to explain which of the polls is getting “better” information, when they all have different results. I’m not making decisions based on polls, and neither should candidates at this point.
Go look at back issues of any news source from Nov 1994 to 1998.
Gingrich didn’t exist in a void. He was Speaker of the House and the target of every outlet that is pumping him now.
“And just why did CNN poll any adults instead of Likely GOP Primary voters?”
Because that’s what it takes to get this result, which is what they want, more than anything.
This poll would have you believe that Cain support is about the same as Perry support. Despite the fact that Cain, just beat Romney in Pennsylvania.
“Dont expect anyone to help you people defend him.”
LMAO.... I can’t tell you how much we were counting on your support. Oh no!!
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
Polls are the data that we have, and this poll is going to be sitting on RCP for a month. Count on it. :)
But do go ahead. Right now the GOP nominee is Romney - Gingrich, which means Obama wins. Guaranteed. I give Obama 2 to 1 over Obama, and best of all, they stack the deck so that we either get O-Care or Mitt-Care.
As much as I like Cain, this seems to be shaping up to Newt becoming the nominee, much the same way McCain did in 2008. Except, this time, conservatives will be a lot better off with Newt than they were with McCain.
