How to avoid a Perry-like brain fart (Don't have your opponent yell out a suggestion)
Globe and Mail ^ | November 10, 2011 | Jaclyn Tersigni

Posted on 11/10/2011 1:29:31 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

We’ve all been there, which may have been what made Rick Perry’s gaffe during Wednesday night’s televised Republican debates extra grimace-inducing. In a media interview on Thursday morning, the Texas governor defended his failure to recall the name of the third government agency he wanted to abolish – a glitch punctuated by an embarrassing “oops” – by pointing out that “All of us make mistakes. I’m a human being.”

But what’s actually happening in our brains when we screw up?

....When our brain becomes narrowly focused – as Perry’s brain was when it was suggested that the name of the forgotten agency was the Environmental Protection Agency – it becomes even more difficult to perform these more analytical functions and incorporate information from a variety of sources.

“With Perry, he gets two of his three things that he’s trying to remember and he gets a miscue and can’t remember,” Dr. Fenske says. “And then even worse, someone gives him EPA as a target so now he locks onto that, further inhibiting the correct one he’s trying to bring to mind.”

So what to do if you find yourself mangling an all-candidates debate? Dr. Fenske says forget continuing to search for the answer – your best bet is to move on to another subject. “If you’re Rick Perry, redirecting and talking about something else for a little while will allow that information to come back, instead of continuing to try to think about it.”

How about actually having thought, discussed, and written about the issue at hand instead of cramming an idea cooked up for political consumption?

Ah, Jeff. And here I thought it would be fun to lampoon Romney. But no such luck with you.

Breaking News: CNN reports accusers will not hold joint news conference. It looks like the attacks on their credibility may be getting to them.

And they must have received those dreaded registered legal letters from Cain's attorney, Lin Wood (<;

What is all this psychobabble? Perry is just not terribly bright. No one would ever give Cain this much cover. Perry has done this crap at 4 debates! No way should he become the nominee so he can choke vs. Obama too.

Actually, he had probably actually thought about and discussed and at least read about it too much in preparing for the show...er, “debate.” He’s obviously not good at these media events so he probably overprepares.

—having had one of those moments about thirty five years ago—(I couldn’t speak the acronym of the organization in front of which I was speaking, of which I had been a member for probably 15 years) , I’d still vote for Perry or anyone else running against THE ONE —

Maybe Mitt should have written how many years he’s been married on his hand so not to make a gaffe.

“I’m a man of steadiness and constancy,” he said. “I’ve married to the same woman for 25 — excuse me, I will get in trouble, for 42 years.”

Perry will show up for his speech therapy intervention with Dr Phil, right after his engaging heart to heart interview with Joyce Behar.

heh heh...nah, we’ll let Mitt get in trouble.

Just interesting how badly Palin got beat up for jotting a few notes on her hand — “too dumb” etc - - - now the same elitists (who never make a mistake, noooo never..) are beating Rick Perry up for being “too dumb” etc.

Perry should have just looked at the camera and said, “Geez, sorry folks, I’m having a Joe Biden moment here!”

Is there anyone out there who has ever given talks, speeches or classes to the public who hasn't had a “senior moment,” a momentary lapse? Most speakers do not use prompters as does the big "O" and are more apt to do so. I have had a few in my time and the older I get the more frequent they seem to come. I now stay close to my notes or written narrative and handle questions with due diligence. The Texan had his moment, indeed, and in front of several million people - not good. But I do understand.

Romney and Gingrich have been running for president since they were in diapers. They’ve been practicing their answers for a long time, Perry hasn’t. I don’t vote for someone because they’re a glib speaker. But Perry will have to improve his public appearances. I’ve heard him speak well in a non-debate forum, and he has a great record as gov. I’m from Wisconsin, so I’m not backing the home boy. We have a glib speaker as president. As long as his teleprompter works anyway.

Low IQ, and incipient Alzheimers are Perry’s problem.

He probably has only a couple of minimally functional years left before he moves into Shady Pines.

When you only read the cliff notes and have no long held beliefs it shows, who would have thought it.

What do you call Mitt’s brain fart?
