Why Rick Perry's Debate Collapse Is The Best Thing That Could Have Happened To Him
Business Insider ^ | 11/10/2011 | Grace Wyler

Within seconds of Rick Perry's onstage collapse last night, the political world had almost unanimously declared the time of death for the Texas Governor's presidential campaign.

But Perry's spectacular meltdown may end up being the best thing that ever happened to his lagging White House bid.

In contrast to the Herman Cain camp, Perry's team has been a model for crisis management in the aftermath of the gaffe. The chagrined candidate has been making the morning show rounds today, displaying a startling humble and human side in the face of some pretty snarky talk show hosts.

Perry's media blitz is now starting to look a lot like a comeback tour. Perry's "I just made a mistake" message has actually set the candidate free, allowing him to shrug off his campaign talking points and show off the straight-talking humility and humor that has long been his strength as a politician.

It helps that everyone knows, or at least fears, the feeling of public humiliation. Perry basically lived out the onstage-in-your-underwear nightmare last night — his cringe-worthy moment evoked sympathy, which is no easy task for a presidential candidate. Moreover, the media's response to the gaffe has been particularly vicious, and is already provoking some to come to Perry's defense.

As I said in my priot post, for two weeks we’ve heard that having allegations of sexual harrassment against you is a great boost to a campaign. SO anything is possible.

If nothing else, maybe Perry will be more entertaining now.

The author has no perspective. No one has accused Perry of years of morally reprehensible behavior because of a gaffe. And on the flip side when a bunch of women accuse you of sexual harrassment you can't just say "oops" and laugh it off.

Almost...need to add detail that the elastic band on the underwear went bad all of a sudden.

"This is the best thing that ever happened to me..."

Funny, that's what the black knight said when he was down to no appendages.

Personally, I think this is an ingenious rope-a-dope strategy by Perry.....

"Mr. Churchill, you admit that Mr. Attlee is a humble man?"

"He is a humble man, but then he has much to be humble about!"

Amazing how people keep posting Business Insider articles here despite the fact that its founder is a hard-core Democrat and has given lots of cash to Obama.

Good to know. I certainly detected a liberal bias from a publication that has "business" in its title.

I do not agree with what I see as the intent of the article and I am not a Perry supporter.

However, I felt his pain while watching him go through that brain freeze. It happens to the best of public speakers.

I already didn’t plan on voting for him, but for other reasons, and this single event would not have be used by me to eliminate him, if I were a supporter.

Is that much different than “I never saw that woman before that I met last month and spoke with, and I’ve got a perfect memory”?

OK, for extra credit - without using the internet, which other candidate had such a bad freeze-up in THIS YEARs debates that it was national news?

“All I know is People at FR are intelligent -—”
and I agree!

If Perry had said -— who turned off my teleprompter.... or... so this is why obama uses a teleprompter .... or some such we would be talking about how quick on his feet he is.

Instead we “R’s” are soooo busy eating him up.

I thought Romney showed better last night, but....

I keep going back to Newt Gingrich - my opinion - he is the only one who really knows what is and has being going on in Washington and CAN make changes. My opinion -

And for extra extra credit, who can name another well-known politician who had a major freeze-up in a debate last year, and many said that candidate was a goner.

Come off as a bumbling idiot

It's his strategy to connect with the majority of voters.

There are about 20 FR posts about this gaffe.

And the usual anti-Perry posters are running around making as many nasty, insulting comments as possible.

The pile on at FR on a conservative is sad.

The question is, when Herb Cain goes down, is how will the other posters react? Giddy puking glee like the anti-Perrys?
