Why Rick Perry's Debate Collapse Is The Best Thing That Could Have Happened To Him
Business Insider ^ | 11/10/2011 | Grace Wyler

Within seconds of Rick Perry's onstage collapse last night, the political world had almost unanimously declared the time of death for the Texas Governor's presidential campaign.

But Perry's spectacular meltdown may end up being the best thing that ever happened to his lagging White House bid.

In contrast to the Herman Cain camp, Perry's team has been a model for crisis management in the aftermath of the gaffe. The chagrined candidate has been making the morning show rounds today, displaying a startling humble and human side in the face of some pretty snarky talk show hosts.

Perry's media blitz is now starting to look a lot like a comeback tour. Perry's "I just made a mistake" message has actually set the candidate free, allowing him to shrug off his campaign talking points and show off the straight-talking humility and humor that has long been his strength as a politician.

It helps that everyone knows, or at least fears, the feeling of public humiliation. Perry basically lived out the onstage-in-your-underwear nightmare last night — his cringe-worthy moment evoked sympathy, which is no easy task for a presidential candidate. Moreover, the media's response to the gaffe has been particularly vicious, and is already provoking some to come to Perry's defense.

What a frigging crock, the butt head has screwed up at every debate and is in the single digits.

At least he isn’t accusing the Cain campaign of slipping him a roofie.

I am of the opinion that the reason the lame stream media is pushing this meme so hard is that they are trying to keep the bottom tier of GOP candidate in play. If those canidates see Perry “fall” then they will hope to pickup some of Perry’s voters and then possibly surge to victory or perhaps a brokered VP slot.

What needs to happen is the bottom 3 need to drop out now, and if Perry voters are going to leave him, do so quickly and go to their next favorite candidate quickly.

“Hey, I’m only human. Everyone seeking to run the largest and most complex organization in the world has memory lapses from time to time on national television during debate. Come on. I just forgot ONE OF THREE multi-million dollar agency that I want to eliminate. So what. I bet you housewives forget to get milk at the supermarket too.”

Actually, Ron Paul's suspect number one - he's got all the good drugs.

Good for Perry! I’m all for anyone breaking out of the Liberal elite straight jacket!

I cannot stand that every candidate and campaign is ridiculed and castigated if it does not follow the elite’s strict guidelines. Fooey! This is America. Why must we follow the Liberal’s script... because then we get a candidate like Obama.

I’m not sure I would have survived that moment. Not if God answered my prayer with a “yes.”

Perry must be cutting into some of Romney’s support, and the establishment knows he is going nowhere. This is how they eat their own.

I’ll take two Perry brain freezes over one of Obama’s stutter blunders.

Go Cain!

Perry is my governor and a good guy (most of the time). But he is not ready to be President, he knows Texas issues and Texas politics, but he does not know national issues (well) or national politics. I consider (and he should too) his bid this year as a learning experience. He’ll be much better prepared next time.

He seems to do that a lot. The debates aren't just useful to GOP voters - they're also one of the few MSM-covered events in which conservatives can present their case for limited government and fiscal sanity to the rest of America. A conservative candidate who comes across as a blithering idiot does a dis-service not only to himself but to the conservative principles he should be championing.

Now, more than ever, the GOP needs a new Ronald Reagan.

Amazing how people keep posting Business Insider articles here despite the fact that its founder is a hard-core Democrat and has given lots of cash to Obama.

If BI is banned from FR, I did not get the memo.

All I know is People at FR are intelligent enough to shift through an articlea and detect any BS. AND THEY DO.

Perry’s gaffe was the best thing that could have happened to him?

And the best thing that ever happened to Captain Smith was hitting the iceberg.

What choice does he have? He can’t deny it, he can’t dismiss it.

I have no idea if he could come back from this, or if he could have come back from his prior debate performances. That is for the electorate to decide.

But I do agree with this article on one point. Perry has NOTHING left to lose. If he’s been trying to “play it safe”, there’s no point anymore. He might as well just go out and have some fun. If it turns out that everybody loves the free-spirited, fun-loving, say what you wish version of Perry, he might come back. If not, at least he gets to be free.

From what I’ve seen, I’d prefer the wacky, free-to-be-me Perry a lot more than the stiff, I’m scared of my shadow Perry.

As to this being an absurd idea — well, for two weeks we have heard that getting (falsely) accused of sexual harrassment was the best thing that could happen to a candidate. So I guess anything is possible.

I feel really sorry for Perry.

But I also have to marvel at how, literally, he has gotten worse in each debate. I breathed a sigh of relief when he said he wouldn’t do any more debates. Too bad he didn’t bow out of this one.

It really is incredible, though. How does one get worse in each successive debate?

Please...please...Governor Perry....please do NOT participate in any more debates!
