Remains Of War Dead Dumped In Landfill
Washington Post ^ | 9 Nov 2011 | Craig Whitlockand Greg Jaffe

The Dover Air Force Base mortuary for years disposed of some dead troops’ body parts by burning them and dumping the ashes in a Virginia landfill, a practice that officials have since abandoned in favor of burying the remains at sea.

The Dover mortuary, which is the main point of entry for America’s war dead, sent remains to the landfill from 2003 until 2008, according to Air Force officials. The manner of disposal was typically withheld from the relatives of fallen service members. The disclosure comes in the aftermath of several federal investigations into mishandling of remains at the mortuary.

Air Force officials acknowledged the practice Wednesday in response to inquiries from The Washington Post. They said the procedure was limited to portions of body parts that were unable to be identified at first or were later recovered from the battlefield, and which family members had indicated could be disposed of by the military

Were it not for the dates in question, they wouldn't have investigated the matter.

Disgusting, makes me sick.

Those responsible should be prosecuted and sent to prison.

That is interesting that they can’t identify the remains. I think all service members have to have DNA samples on file. I know I do. I can’t believe somebody didn’t do an immediate WTF on the land fill solution.

But they could sort out remains at ground zero. They just don’t want to take the time and money to do it for our troops. Heck the citizens in those muzzie countries are more important tha n our troops.

It sounds very bad, but one needs to read the whole article to understand some context.

I see it rather as more liberal WaPo hating on the military

Crazy!!! Without getting into too much detail, a friends father was buried today in Arlington after they found some remains in Vietnam. He was a helicopter pilot it Vietnam in 1972. He was finally put to rest after an amazing story. RIP Captain.

We have very strict time requirements to get the remains to NOK which is undoubtedly a factor here. That said, this is not going to be pretty for the USAF.

Those portions of remains were cremated and then dumped. Hard to go thru a landfill for small bits of bone, I guess.
Nonetheless, Shame on them, and on Bush if he knew of it.

from 2003 until 2008

I know that DNA was taken from me as a new recruit in 1995 for identification purposes so the remains could have been identified.

Several folks need to be sent to prison. If I were the SecDef I would eviscerate the entire command.

I am sick right now with anger and want to do bodily harm to someone...

Was the 1SG and office manager at the POW/MIA office in Ha Noi, officially called Det2.

You would not what happened during the Clinton administration regarding POWs.

Notice my wording POWs.

Glad to hear your friends father made it home.
