NEW YORK (AP) Cable companies said Wednesday that they will offer Internet service for $9.95 per month to homes with children that are eligible for free school lunches.
The offer will start next summer and is part of an initiative the Federal Communications Commission cobbled together to get more U.S. homes connected to broadband.
One third, or about 35 million homes, don't have broadband. That affects people's ability to educate themselves and find and apply for jobs, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.

“The offer will start next summer and is part of an initiative the Federal Communications Commission cobbled together to get more U.S. homes connected to broadband.”
Another GSE, another intrusion into free enterprise, another million votes for the Dhims.
Children who are “eligible for free school lunches” should have NO TV.
TV and and the entertainment morass is actually a distraction and burden to such kids.
and thier legitimate customers will pay for it.
Backdoor Socialism
Me too. My kids get free school lunch, cause I PAY FOR IT.

Gollies
Whats wrong with those people ???
I never used the Internet to “educate myself and find and apply for jobs”
Why do they need it ???
I used newspapers and books...
Since these are people who must be sitting at home since they dont have jobs, whats the betting they wont just watch porn, play games or gamble online ???
Plus if they do look for jobs and go to work what happens then ???
Will they then be charged the regular rates ???
The parasites get another slice of our hard earned dollars. Isn’t Socialism grand? I am planning to shrug in the near future.
How much will it cost the “non-poor” homes to give it to them? Somebody’s going to have to pay for it.
Note that this reduce-price broadband is also (significantly) reduced speed over the normally-priced plans.
My only problem with this is the means testing they put on it; instead, I’d just prefer they offer this low tier of service to ANY subscriber who is ok with the slower speeds.
they just need quicker access to porn.
I didn't read the article but they're probably offering 7.68 Mbit DSL or 1 Mbit Cable broadband? My own DSL is $14.95/month from Frontier. Yeah, $9.95 would be better yet.
“they just need quicker access to porn.”
And stupid youtube videos and Facebook.
So when do the taxpayers get the bill for the computers they need to connect to this? Heck, the “poor” already get free cell phones.
10.00 a month doesn’t cover the truck roll and the cost of the modem someone is gonna pay
Meant .768 Mbit lol
