UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.
As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."
"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

Yes. And while I do not absolve them for their inaction, at least they understandably feared for their jobs. Based on what I've read, the guy who actually saw it was shaking uncontrollably and his coworkers thought he was having a heart attack. At least that response reflects some humanity.
Good. I sure hope so. ANYBODY who knew what this monster Sandusky was - - a predatory homosexual pedophile - - and failed to go after him with everything they had should end up in a cell next to his. That includes Paterno, but I am not yet willing to throw Paterno under the bus until I know more about what he knew and when he knew it.
All I know so far is that Paterno was aware of ONE incident that he claims was reported to him in an unclear manner. Paterno passed the report along to people who were supposed to investigate. Whether Paterno did or did not follow up or gain any further information about Sandusky is not known. Gee, ain't 20/20 hindsight grand? I know the prosecutor did clear Paterno of criminal culpability, but was there moral and ethical culpability? I'm not as clever and psychic as the mob here, so I guess I'll wait and see what shakes out.
It is easy for everybody to sit at their keyboards without a clue and speculate about what Paterno did or didn't know, and what Paterno SHOULD have done based on what he did or didn't know, but as for me, I'll wait until I know more. If Paterno truly knew (and understood) what Sandusky was then he deserves to be thrown under the bus and I'll gladly put that bus in gear and run him over, back and forth.
Until then, I will give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Sorry. I know that's not the mob mentality, but there you go. One thing I am sure of - - you don't publicly point a finger at somebody and holler, "gay pedophile rapist!" unless you are 100% positive about it. The issue is: There was a serious and troubling report. What did the people who were supposed to investigate do about it? From here, it looks like they let a monster roam the campus for nine more years.
What has gone on, and is going on at Penn State is just a mirror of what is going on in much of today’s America. It is disgusting beyond any normal decent standards and will probably get worse.
I think you are right!!!! Paterno decided to kick Sandusky out of his "inner sanctum" but let him remain at the University's "outer sanctum" with emeritus status. So, Sandusky was still able to bring kids onto the campus as recently as last week.
I fired my best friend and the president of our church board. He was not doing his job and had to go.
Paterno had the opportunity to save young boys and his first choice was to save his career.
In the Grand Jury Presentment one victim (victim 4 I think) testifies that Sandusky came from a meeting where Paterno told him he would not be the next coach and Sandusky was very upset.
Sandusky retired shortly thereafter.
Also after the 98 incident Sandusky was forbidden from bringing children onto campus. An unenforceable prohibition but one that JoePa surely was aware of.
I believe this supports your thinking about what Joe knew and when.
It wasn’t a rumor. A guy witnessed an attack on a ten year old boy in the men’s shower in the locker room. He went home and told his father, who knew Paterno, and the father advised him not to go to the police, but to go to Joe Paterno.
That’s what he did and Paterno kicked the decision up to the next level. There were people in the school administration who knew all about it and helped make the decisions about how to handle it.
Spanier knew everything. It seems that the school administrators put the PR of the football team and the university about the child welfare. My guess is that they justified it by telling each other that exposing Sandusky would reflect badly on the football players and the rest of the university.
There is NO DOUBT that a whole bunch of people were involved in covering this up.
Too many knew, and too many DID NOTHING, to protest the PSU Brand, and the $$$ the football program brings in. And to admit this was happening would have hurt the image program under way to make PSU on of “The Most Gay-Friendly Campuses In America!”.
The AGENDA was far more important than protecting kids. It’s just as simple as that.
The anouncement that they are “Allowing” the 82 year old coach to retire at the END OF HIS CONTRACT is a slap in the face.
They should can his azz now! Not the end of the season.
“What has gone on, and is going on at Penn State is just a mirror of what is going on in much of todays America. It is disgusting beyond any normal decent standards and will probably get worse.”

It will.
We are a fearful, politically correct nation of cowards, particularly in the diseased world of Big Academia. This malady is especially acute when it comes to standing up to self-serving “giants” like Joe Paterno.
Yeah, unphuckingbelievable!
I have been keeping a list. Here was my last update:

People we know that knew Sandusky raped little boys.
President Spanier
AD Curley
VP Schultz
PSU Attorney Courtney
Second Mile Attorney Courtney
University Police
State College Police
Child Services
County DA Gricar
County Prosecutors
Coach McQueary
Various elementary and high school officials
Second Mile officials
Joe Paternos staff including down to the janitors
Paterno was told of the specifics. Two other PennStatePedo's were told the specifics. These other two are the ones who reduced it to “horseplay” and that is why they are being criminally charged.
It is my experience that people are usually in denial when it comes to accusations of sexual abuse against someone that they know. Child abuse is so far out of the norm for most people that they cannot even imagine someone that they know, being an abuser, unless they have seen it themselves.
The story that I heard is that someone witnessed an attack on a boy in the shower room and told Paterno, but did not make a report to the police. Paterno told school administrators what he was told, but did not go to the police. School administrators did nothing.
“...if he knew of children being abused on his watch....he needs to GO!”

...to jail.
Seems to me there was some kind of MAD (”Mutually Assured Destruction”) arrangement between Sandusky and PSU.
And to think that Mike Leach was summarily dismissed from Texas Tech for what (in my opinion) was just some much-needed discipline of a spoiled kid.
As long as they slip him out quietly and he is not on the sidelines for the games I am ok with the timing. I just hope he can survive till he has to testify in the trials.
I hear Leach is in line for the Ole Miss job.
