Joe Paterno’s Fall
The Daily Beast ^ | Nov 8, 2011 | Michael Tomasky

Sandusky (left, in a 1999 photo) is charged with sexual abuse of eight boys

Could it be that on some deep and horrible psychological level, it was precisely the fact of Joe Paterno’s moral authority—and God, did he have it, not only as much as anyone in college football, but as much as any prominent person in America in any field—that enabled this revolting daisy chain of denial to exist at Penn State? Because, after all, he was a great man. A great moral man. Great moral men don’t hire depraved monsters. Great moral men don’t let things like this happen in their orbit. Great moral men take care of these things. But he didn’t. This kind of thing could have happened at any university. But it could have happened the exact way it did only at Penn State, where everyone, from that cowed janitor to the president, takes his cues from Coach.

Let us first be blunt about the facts at hand, because some media outlets resort to the kind of euphemism that appallingly softens the blow of what Jerry Sandusky is alleged to have done to “Victim 2,” as he is called in the grand-jury report Forgive my language, but here at the Beast we are permitted these very occasional lapses, so let me say it plainly, the better to ensure that we all understand just how shocking and sickening this is: On the evening of March 1, 2002, Sandusky, it is alleged, was raping a 10-year-old boy in his anus. A 10-year-old boy. In the very showers used by the Nittany Lions players.

He was a grad assistant - the smallest minnow in the food chain. He deserves credit for not buying the BS and going to the coach. In 2011, as an adult, McQ might just as well beat the crap out of the perv on the spot as well.

McQueary was a PSU quarterback and was the starter in 1997. That would make him about 27 (AN ADULT) in 2002. You should get your facts straight before shooting in the dark.

Looks like McQueary could handle himself alright. Particularly against a 58 year old man ...

None of us knows enough to condemn abyone but Sandusky and the two admins who were charged yesterday.

The head of the PA state police condemned everyone from the top down.

yes - he is a large capable guy.

And I would venture to say....most men, no matter the size, would have intervened.

And I’ll go further.

Most women would have as well.

you clearly have not read the presentment.

Please read the part where the 28 yr. old former quarterback describes the scene.
Then try to imagine yourself walking away.

I bet you can’t do it.

No, Mc Q and Paterno did not keep quiet. Both reported their knowledge to their immediate supervisors. The stories are quite clear about that. I believe it was the former head of the PA State Police who made the comments. It seems to me that any current or former state officer out running his mouth on this either has an ax to grind or is too stupid to realize he is jeopardizing the cases against Sandusky and the two admins. So, following the ex-cop’s non-logic the defendant should be a “culture”. What a crock! Three people may be responsible, ultimately: Sandusky for being a pervert and the two admins for covering up. Since a grand jury operates without time limits and without any limits on evidence discovery this particular GJ of disinterested (neutral) folks did not find sufficient evidence to indict McQ or Paterno. Those folks probably heard stuff that would make your skin crawl as well as stuff that would surprise most folks about the supposed “culture”. Was Paterno subpoened to the GJ? Was McQ? I don’t know. If they were they had to appear without counsel and had to answer every question under oath under penalty of perjury. It sounds like the GJ did a thorough and comprehensive job. The article from the Beast asks the rhetorical question about how Paterno could hire such a “monster”. That’s a fair question since PSU is a state school and makes all potential employees undergo a thorough criminal records check. In “coach world” there are also tons of unofficial, off record conversations. I believe if anything had indicated Sandusky’s true nature he would never been hired. This is horrible for the victims. I’m not minimizing that. A perv beat the system for years. Sadly, that happens.

No, Mc Q and Paterno did not keep quiet. Both reported their knowledge to their immediate supervisors.

They all kept quiet in 1998 when Sandusky was raping ten year old boys in Paterno's locker room.

They all kept quiet in 2000 when Sandusky was raping ten year old boys in Paterno's locker room.

They all kept quiet in 2002 when Sandusky was raping ten year old boys in Paterno's locker room.

NO one came forward. They all kept quiet.

“Personally, I think Paterno is selfish and power-mad. He should retire.”

The whole truth should come out, and when it does I think it will be known that Paterno is NOT squeaky-clean. Let him burn with the rest of ‘em!

He isn’t just a pedophile, he is a magnitude more disgusting homosexual boy-molestor. Like NAMBLA members he would probably be welcomed to march in the next “gay” pride parade.

The guy is not a pedophile, he is a predatory queer!””

Bingo: and what people don’t get is this deviance is part of the lifestyle. It is the ultimate obsession of male homosexuals to molest boys in filthy public restrooms.

A victim’s mother speaks ....

“I don’t even have words to talk about the betrayal that I feel,” said the mom of Victim Six. “[McQueary] was a grown man, and he saw a boy being sodomized ... He ran and called his daddy?”

Why wasn't he fired when they got him on tape admitting to molesting a boy in the shower?

Why wasn't he kicked off campus and reported to the the proper authorities when he was caught in 2002. Why didn't the staff report it to the authorities when he was caught in the showers with a boy in 2000?

They all kept quiet. Even when her son broke down at school the people at the school urged her to keep it quiet. They should be in jail too! What is going on in this town? Never mind. We now know that it was hell for little boys ...

“They told me to go home and think about what I wanted to do, and I was not happy,” she said. “They said I needed to think about how that would impact my son if I said something like that. I went home and got [my son] and we came to [Children and Youth Services] immediately.”

This dude was taking boys out of class with the mother’s permission!!!!!!!!! What kind of school is it that allows this?

“I called the school principal and the guidance counselor and said, if nothing else, he’s taking my son out of classes. He’s leaving the school with him. ... So I asked them to call him into the office and ask [my son] how he felt.

Calls by the referee are part of the game, sometimes the call goes your way sometimes it doesn’t. In theory it all evens out, you do not argue the call. Also there is what is known as a make up call. If a ref makes a bad call and knows he made a bad call, it is possible he will call one your way to make up for the earlier error. You would have to be crazy to say “hey ref I trapped that pass, I did not catch it”. It might very well be that the ref was giving you a make up call. All in all just accepting the calls made by the officials is the only way to play the game.

Then why did they put challenges into the game and automatic reviews?

Every Penn State home game brings in at least 100,000 people. There are 7 regular season home games this year. According to one article (here: http://blog.pennlive.com/life/2010/08/how_much_does_it_cost_to_go_to.html), it costs around $160 per attendee. That’s 7 x 160 x 100,000, for just game day revenue in the local area alone. Total $112 million, a year.

When can easily double that in ancillary local area revenues associated with the team. The Penn State football team is worth, by that estimate, a quarter billion dollars a year.

If not for that State College is small college town in a very rural area.

I am dumb founded that the witness did not immediately try to stop assault. I can only assume it was not a forceable assault but even then that any adult man (or woman) would walk away is inconceivable. WTF?

It has been reported that Spanier has brought in over $3 billion to PSU in his 16 years.

Front page of the local Patriot-News paper. Paterno won't, and shouldn't, still be coaching by Saturday.

He's lucky he's not looking at prison. Yet.
