Cain Holds Big Lead Over GOP Rivals in Iowa

Despite being embroiled in controversy last week, Herman Cain leads the Republican presidential field by 15 percentage points in Iowa, according to a new poll taken four days after news broke that the Atlanta businessman had been accused of sexually harassing women while head of the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990s.

Cain attracts 30 percent support from Iowa GOP caucus-goers, according to the Insider Advantage poll. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney places a distant second with 15 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich rounds out the top three with 12 percent. The remaining candidates poll in the single digits: Texas Rep. Ron Paul garners 9 percent, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann -- who won the straw poll in Ames in August -- receives 8 percent, Texas Gov. Rick Perry earns 6 percent, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman has 2 percent.

Cain leads among each age group by double digits except for voters 65 and older, who back Romney over Cain, 25 percent to 14 percent. Cain also leads among minority groups. He holds a 17-point edge over Gingrich among male voters (Romney comes in third) and a 12-point lead over Romney among females (Gingrich places third).

He’s close. I want to see more state polls.

I have him a point down in FL. He’s still behind Mitt in ECs, and behind Mitt and Perry in states.

He’s come a long, long way in a month, though. He’s very close to being in a position, where Mitt can’t win unless he can flip Cain states.

Mitt is strong and may be ahead of Cain in: ID, WY, MT, CO, NM, and AK in addition to the states that he already holds.

Mitt is competitive in ME, and IL, which are slim Cain states.

That is exactly what the Iowa fund is for. Its to fund a grass roots organization to win Iowa.

You're missing a great Ravens-Steelers game right now.

Very true. The Gnats-Pats match was another thriller.

Cain and Mitt tied in the Illinois Republican Party straw poll. We're raising Cain in our neck of the woods.

That all should change once it is a one on one race between Romney and the lone conservative left standing. Right now many stragglers are dividing the conservative vote. Romney has possibly only Huntsman dividing votes. This is why the early primaries are crucial. If Romney wins early primaries, he will be entrenched.

Good, because keeping IL out of Mitt’s hands makes Florida indispensible. He can’t win without it. There’s just not enough votes in the NE, and West coast, even with UT and NV, to take the nomination. Especially since he’s only leading in Michigan in the rust belt.

Well, he’s got to pass Perry’s inherited state lead from before. He’s very close. I keep waiting for more state polls to come out, but there’s been very little data to work with.

The last time Perry polled ahead in any state was in Louisiana, back in the 14th of October. That’s 3 weeks ago. Since then it’s been all Cain/Mitt. Even then, he was only +2.

I mean no disrespect to any FReeper Iowans, but why do the media writers, polls and talking heads continually put so much attention on the caucauses held there?

Iowa, and for that matter New Hampshire, are NOT representative of the people who vote in America. Both have few EC votes and I’d guess that most of their citizens haven’t experienced what’s called fly-over country here.

Why do Americans and the news media permit these tiny minority states to supposedly determine who our POTUS candidates should be?

I agree, there is no scenario where Perry comes back, because he hasn't changed his position on illegals.

This whole deal reminds me of when the media kept pushing Huntsman earlier in the year.. meanwhile I am thinking the whole time... um... Huntsman is proudly pro abortion... and he is never, ever, ever going to be the nominee as long as he holds that position.

you are exactly right, I have added up the numbers and Romney can’t even come close to getting the nomination, even when I start being generous and give him 10 point landslides in a lot of places I know that’s unlikely.

I think there’s a very good chance the Herminator will be the GOP nominee. If so, will the anointed one use the “inexperienced” issue against him?

True, dat.

Why do Americans and the news media permit these tiny minority states to supposedly determine who our POTUS candidates should be?

It's by design.
