An explosive sex abuse scandal and possible cover-up rocked Happy Valley after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno's heir apparent, was charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over a 15-year period. Among the allegations was that a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the Nittany Lions' practice center in 2002.
Sandusky retired in 1999 but continued to use the school's facilities for his work with The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk kids. The state grand jury investigation also resulted in perjury charges against Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. The two administrators were accused of failing to alert police as required by state law of their investigation of the allegations.
"This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys," state Attorney General Linda Kelly said Saturday in a statement.
Paterno, who last week became the winningest coach in Division I football, wasn't charged, and the grand jury report didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.

JoePa reaches a coaching milestone, and finally the justice system acts on something that should have been addressed many years ago. I guess Happy Valley ain’t so happy for some children. :( Disgusting.
Actually he reported it to Curley, NOT Shultz. Careful with your facts.
Seems it was NEVER reported to the police. No police report, no problem, business as usual.
“Though Schultz oversaw the Penn State University Police Department as a part of his position, he never reported the incident to police, “

Nope. I grew up in the South but the game of the year was always Alabama-PSU. We all loved PSU before and during the JP era. He should have retired a few years ago but that would have been the only thing negative I would have said about PSU till yesterday.
“Why Paterno was even involved is beyond me - hes a football coach, not an LEO”
Paterno was “involved” because boys where being raped in his football showers. Why is that difficult? Paterno had a responsibility as the manager of the program to gather the all the facts. When they were not (i.e. victim not id’d, perp still on campus, etc.) he had a responsibility to escalate the matter. He did not do that and because of that a child rapist was on the loose for another 9 years.
BTW, it is alleged Joepa and Sandusky were still in contact on a daily basis. This after at least 2 investigated assaults on a child by Sandusky. That seems weird. Sorry if that is reactionary.
I know there are some overzealous football fans out there, but that is a real stretch. I suspect even Pitt fans could put aside their rivalry and be horrified by the crime and cover-up in this case.
I have always rooted for PSU over PITT!
I have always rooted for PSU except when they played a SEC team.
LOL... Glad to hear that is not your football allegiance that is causing you to criticize the coaching staff's complicity in allowing a child predator to remain free (as seemed to be alleged by someone else). ;)
No. He took it to the AD. The head of the police was NEVER informed, at least to the best of our knowledge.
What did Paterno do after the 1998 investigation?
They aren’t “Paterno’s showers” and it’s patently idiotic to even suggest anything of the sort. He’s not the warlord of a small part of the town. He’s a football coach. He has no obligation to gather all the facts or anything of the sort. He did what he was supposed to do. Paterno contacted Curley immediately and then shortly thereafter contacted Schultz, who oversaw the University police. If that isn’t escalation, I don’t know what the hell is.
By the way, alleging that Paterno and Sandusky had daily contact is meaningless. Whether you’re pulling that out of your ass or not is irrelevant since it has no bearing on anything.
You think JoePa doesn’t have supreme control over everything that goes on there?
Hell with their mediocre performance over the last 10 years, I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept his job specifically because he had these pinheads over a barrel. (poor choice of words perhaps).
I want to know who looked out for that kid? I would like to know how JoePa or anyone from PSU didn’t see to it that Second Mile was busted up, and destroyed. Instead Sandusky is hanging around in 2002 despite past issues.
It doesn’t matter what we say here go check twitter trends JoePa is finished. The bigger question is how much does PSU end up paying out in civil suits? Lawyers are probably arranging hotels in Happy Valley as we speak.
The grand jury report (pages 8-10 in particular) point out that Schultz was notified by both the graduate assistant and Paterno about the 2002 rape. It is also noted that Schultz “oversaw the police as part of his position.” That’s about as clear as can be.
As for the 1998 investigation, I have no idea what, if any, details Paterno knew. What they knew was that the investigation (wrongly) resulted in no criminal charges but “administrative” actions were taken (the unenforceable ban on bringing children to campus) as well as the unceremonious end to his coaching career. You are again holding Paterno to an impossible standard.
Paterno didn’t contact Schultz. But I do see that you modify your ‘words’ as you get caught misrepresenting the facts.
There are plenty of guilty parties at Penn State but Paterno isn’t one of them. The guy is an 80 year old football coach and people are upset that he didn’t transform into some combination of Wyatt Earp and Sherlock Holmes to singlehandedly identify and put a stop to a problem he didn’t know about.
I urge you to re-read your first sentence and think about it.
Just for the record it was not reported to ANY police agency.
” Schultz said there was never any discussion between himself and Curley about turning the 2002 incident over to any police agency.”

If he had knowledge of a predator attacking a child, or reason to believe it MAY have happened, he should notify the police immediately and directly. Notifying Curley, Shultz, Moe or Harpo is just an administrative procedure and could be the second or third calls he made.
Weeks passed while this red tape process went on.
Whatever. Looking the other way after this dude if found banging a ten year old in your locker room is ok with you? Never mind looking the other way after the 1998 event while he was in his employment. Never mind all the 'comments' circulating about this guy and his behavior around young boys.
