Democrats had ruled the state Agriculture Department for a hundred years. Perry immediately ejected Hightower loyalists and Democratic operatives from the agency. He pledged to cut the departments staff by 20 percent and scale down the number of regional offices around the state.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry talked with a friend
in September 1991 while visiting a ranch outside Austin.
After Rick Perry switched from Democrat to Republican in 1989, he set out to become, in the words of his mentor Phil Gramm, more Catholic than the pope.
During the next 22 years, as he rose to the top of Austins power grid, Perry not only left his Democrat friends behind he helped destroy them politically. And Texas evolved into a redder-than-red state.
Perry and the GOP took down U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, Texas House Speaker Pete Laney , Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower , Texas Comptroller John Sharp and many other Democrats...
Perry has portrayed his move as a matter of principle, while those Democrats, and others, say it was the result of political ambition. Expressing grudging admiration, Stenholm said, Rick has become a master politician.
Stenholm and Perry grew up where pump jacks, cattle and rows of cotton exist side by side on the plains of rural West Texas. Stenholm, a conservative blue dog Democrat, was already in Congress when he helped recruit a 33-year-old Perry to run for state representative in 1984.
....After graduating from Texas A&M in 1972, Perry spent six years as an Air Force pilot and then returned to Haskell County in 1977 to work the farm and ranch with his dad. He had gotten a taste for politics after joining the American Agriculture Movement, which brought the problems of family farmers and ranchers to public attention...........

It sounded like they were trying to tear Perry down here, too.
But they showed he is a true hard-core conservative who switched parties for the right reasons and advanced the cause about as much as anybody has.
Thanks. The vetting process continues.
You have NO basis for that comment and I submit it is YOU, working as an opposition poster who hits every Perry thread, who is the liar and provocateur working to counter the effective dissemination of information in this GOP primary vetting process.
hocndoc, on your post #60 about Cain and his wife and their political history, you started out the post addressing it to BobL, as if you were answering his post.
But your post does not list BobL as a recipient, it only lists deport.
If you meant to ping BobL to your post with the facts about Cain and his wife, you didn’t do it.
Being a lifelong Texan, born and raised, I understand plenty.
Unlike yourself who is a joke and a hater and a thread spammer with lies and insults to offer.
Your hobby is sick, twisted, perverted and not a real representation of anything.
BobL, I meant to ping you to # 60.
(thanks txrangerette!)
Wow.
“BobL, I meant to ping you to # 60.”
I stand corrected...thanks. But don’t forget, Clinton was the first ‘black’ president, so the vote doesn’t surprise me.
Was the comment made to you, are you trying to say amnesty is not amnesty. When you remove the illegal it is amnesty and pointing that out is the vetting process. Sad thing is you people back flip daily with this BS of perry did not mean that, this is what he meant. Like his recent statement that he never said anything about secession. Man is a loon. Perry is headed to the also ran, and he will stay there thanks to your efforts.
Again, last night Gingrich and Cain supported “guest worker” programs.
Spin yourself silly. It won’t change the facts.
Ricky has been called "the human price tag." He will sell himself to anyone---and will do and be whatever is necessary to climb the political ladder. He manages to stay in the 2012 race despite sinking to the bottom of the pack----b/c he has millions and millions of special interest dollars. Ricky can get millions more by making a few calls to Mexico and to his wealthy Islamic friends----who are hellbent on seeing Ricky in the WH.
============================================
BACKSTORY Ricky has an odd unbroken string of elections---two-time AG commisioner, then Lt governor, then three-time governor. Candidate Perry makes sure he "looks" like the most conservative candidate.
Many Texans never caught onto his tricks----Perry talks "conservative" but when it comes time for the vote, he cues in his Big Money buddies to lobby against "conservative reforms." Trusting Texans never knew what him 'em---except that the "poor governor" was "betrayed" by the Republican controlled legislature.
He's doing poorly in the 2012 race b/c many many people outside Texas are onto him.
I’m for legalizing certain ones of them to work, nothing more.
There have been laws that did not work and were not enforced, etc. They were changed.
There used to be a law called prohibition that forbid alcholic beverages.
There used to be Jim Crow laws that upheld segregation in place as it was.
Don’t you, or BobL, or anybody else try to jive me that a law is so sacred it can never be changed once it is a law. What jokers you are if you think for a nanosecond you can get that by me with your whinings about “the Law”.
I am against granting amnesty and am against making people citizens.
Addressing the desire of those to work in order to keep their families from starving, which is why many of them do try to come here, is something worth doing, as long as it is done with a Border Security plan in force, and does not take jobs away from citizens who would otherwise want those jobs.
Your high horse about a law that exists being unchangeable won’t fly with anyone with a brain.
Apparently, it must seem to you that others have no brains.
Or else you wouldn’t try that nonsense.
“Al Gore was considered the conservative Democrat running in the 1988 presidential primary (pro-Life, family values, 2nd Amendment). Dukakus took the nomination and Perry washed his hands of the party and joined the GOP. Perry also voted both times for Ronald Reagan.”
This one’s already been covered, but Gore was drifting left throughout the 1980s. By the time Perry was working with him, his ACU Rating was 9. He was PATHETIC. Yes, Dukakis did win the nomination in 1988, but Perry did not change parties until 1989, so I have to assume he was also fine with Dukakis. As to Reagan, I have no idea how Perry voted as I wasn’t in the booth with him...but I do know that Perry had no problem staying with the Democrat Party as they tried to IMPEACH Reagan over Iran-Contra.
If Cain says “A” and Gingrich says “A” and Perry says “A” org.whodat says:
There’s La Raza Rick calling me heartless again.
Go stretch somewhere else.
