Democrats had ruled the state Agriculture Department for a hundred years. Perry immediately ejected Hightower loyalists and Democratic operatives from the agency. He pledged to cut the departments staff by 20 percent and scale down the number of regional offices around the state.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry talked with a friend
in September 1991 while visiting a ranch outside Austin.
After Rick Perry switched from Democrat to Republican in 1989, he set out to become, in the words of his mentor Phil Gramm, more Catholic than the pope.
During the next 22 years, as he rose to the top of Austins power grid, Perry not only left his Democrat friends behind he helped destroy them politically. And Texas evolved into a redder-than-red state.
Perry and the GOP took down U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, Texas House Speaker Pete Laney , Texas Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower , Texas Comptroller John Sharp and many other Democrats...
Perry has portrayed his move as a matter of principle, while those Democrats, and others, say it was the result of political ambition. Expressing grudging admiration, Stenholm said, Rick has become a master politician.
Stenholm and Perry grew up where pump jacks, cattle and rows of cotton exist side by side on the plains of rural West Texas. Stenholm, a conservative blue dog Democrat, was already in Congress when he helped recruit a 33-year-old Perry to run for state representative in 1984.
....After graduating from Texas A&M in 1972, Perry spent six years as an Air Force pilot and then returned to Haskell County in 1977 to work the farm and ranch with his dad. He had gotten a taste for politics after joining the American Agriculture Movement, which brought the problems of family farmers and ranchers to public attention...........

“Hate to break up your little fun-fest but the question you ask must be decided by Congress. Rick Perry will champion sealing the border (and as commander in chief he WILL do it) and no amnesty.”
Again, we judge by his ACTIONS here in Texas...and they have been very weak, compared to other states like Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.
And that’s just it. Each state (and we have been doing things here in Texas to push back — inc. the Photo voter ID, drivers lic, supporting other states’ actions, $400 million and boots on the border, and other legislation but Perry can’t dictate to the legislature) has to fight the Fed’s inaction. And it always gets tied up in the courts. We need someone who knows how bad this is and that the border must be sealed for anything to happen on this.
Who is your candidate?
Perry gets his orders from Mexico on this----when amnesty bombed, Mexico told Perry to back-off.
All that matters to Mexico is getting Perry elected.
Once in the WH, Perry will do whatever Mexico tells him to do.
Seriously, are you supporting one of the candidates?
I share your concerns and I am the poster child of Perry supporters. His debate performances suck. But, with each one, he’s gotten better, bit by bit. I’ve seen Perry overcome, adapt, and adjust in previous campaigns. Over the past two weeks, he has had multiple excellent interviews. He finally has his economic plans out, and they were well received. Nov 9, we’ll see a much better performance and I am hoping it will squelch my own anxiousness about it.
As for the FR posters that are for Cain: Cain’s people that post all of that bull about Perry are the dumb and nasty for sure. They also have a very misogynist streak, just like their candidate.
Anyone can determine that Cain is a conservative imposter after reading your post here:

It sort of makes me wonder what is so “conservative” about Herman Cain? He supports crony capitalism on the magnitude of the TRILLIONS. TARP, GM, et al.
Oh my.
You won’t name a candidate in the race that you support but yet you go all over FR bashing the GOP candidates.
Are you a Democrat?
RE: “and b/c [Perry’s] rich Mexican and Islamic friends are hellbent on putting him in the WH. “
I am sure you have links to back up your smear. I am waiting, but so far only hear ::crickets::
So you REFUSE to name a candidate.
It has every bearing on everything that you post as you come on GOP candidate threads only to bash them.
Which one do you support (as I see no one has come here to tell me what you refuse to)?
Anyway, what have you done to get your congressmen to do something about protecting the border?
It is perfectly legit to ask who you support.
Your refusal to divulge a choice says it all.
You are a deeply confused person, I have not seen anything in this thread about my congressman, could you give me a link to where it was about, him/she/it.
Quite calling out posters and tell us who you support.
