Ohio Voters Look Set To Dump Republicans' Anti-Union Law The balloting will be closely watched in a state that could be pivotal in the 2012 presidential election.
By Paul West November 5, 2011 Reporting from Hanoverton, Ohio An aggressive Republican drive to weaken the labor rights of government workers appears to have crested, at least in Ohio, where voters are expected to throw out a far-reaching anti-union law this week.
The referendum over collective bargaining for public employees, potentially the most important contest in off-year elections around the nation, is being closely watched for clues about shifting voter trends in a state expected to play its usual outsized role in next year's presidential contest.
Barely seven months ago, newly elected Gov. John Kasich joined other Republican governors, including Wisconsin's Scott Walker, in defying angry street demonstrations to push through a measure designed to curb the power of public-employee unions.

I hope they don’t vot it down. That would only serve to bolster and embolden Team Obama thru next November.
This is, after all, the LAT, so taken with a grain of salt.
From what I see, it will be about 60/40 to retain Kashich's program.
Go you Buckeyes.
I asked this on another thread, but why “must” cops be unionized?
I have my doubts...but I hope you’re right.
Honestly, they should have passed the provisions in this bill in parts instead of one gigantic bill.
Ohio has a long history of taxpayers voting down bonds to build new schools for overpaid teachers.
During hard times taxpayers have an even greater incentive to vote down overpaid teachers!
Bwahahahahaha!
Was a poll done on this issue to show which way the voters are leaning? I don’t see any specific poll mentioned in the article to back up the title of the article.
I suspect Senate Bill 5 will be repealed, unfortunately. I’m confident that several parts of the law will be passed as separate bills; had the components of SB5 been passed singly in the first place, there would never had been a referendum drive to have it repealed.
If it fails, breaking it into pieces is what will happen, in addition to some layoffs.
As Ohio goes, so goes Obama
the la times wonders why in a few years they will
have to stop publishing their paper.
I *think* the cops became unionize originally as a sort of cooperative, for protection against suits to individual cops, and to be able to deal with the brass collectively rather than individually on things like promotions. I’d rather see them, and teachers, and others on the public payroll, in an actual trade association or trade cooperative, rather than union.
There has to be something more effective than unions that would offer the protections they need without the thuggery. Then again, the biggest teachers union is misnamed the “National Education Association.”
I don’t personally believe in unions for public employees, but understand there’s a lot of politics involved in those jobs, as to who gets what promotion. I suppose the members see it as protection if they are personally not favored by the power-brokers.
From your lips (keyboard) to God’s ears. Ohio people, support your Governor, John Kasich. Support a right to work state.
Support Governor Kasich!
The LAT reporter went to a local union hall and took a poll, isn’t that good enough for you?
“Ohio has a long history of taxpayers voting down bonds to build new schools for overpaid teachers.”
It should happen here in Fairfax County. I can’t remember a single election when a school bond referendum wasn’t on the ballot. And they ALWAYS win. ALWAYS. This year will be no different.
Boy I hope you’re right. A win here will really pour gasoline on the fire that the same union thugs will light off next month to recall Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin, and will be translated as proof that the Tea Party is dead and progressives are back in control.
No, it's going down.
Plenty of polling. None show us any better than a 15 point loss.
This is Issue 2 on our ballot and it will likely be defeated. There have been radio and tv ads running non-stop for weeks telling people to vote NO. All of the ads make people believe that they will not have police or firemen available when they have an emergency. The pro-issue 2 backers have done nothing to combat this. People are simply not properly informed about the issue.
