Perry needs to sell Perry. That's about as simple as I can put it.

This is what it boils down to. Cain and Gingrich may have impressed people tonight, but after all is said and done, they make their biggest gains when Perry does or says something that is not popular.

Perry is not hurting in the polls and losing support because of Cain's 9-9-9 plan or Newt's intelligence or debate prowess, Perry is hurting because of comments he made. And he keeps on doing it. Witness his interview with CNN a few nights ago where he said illegal immigrants should be given " work visas in which they can move back and forth between their countries". Things like this can cause people to leave Perry for another candidate, or they can cause people on the fence about the candidates in general to cross Perry off their list.

Cain and Gingrich won't make big gains after tonight, but I think they are solidifying their support. Their biggest gains are still going to depend on Perry continuing to say things that are unpopular, or other candidates losing further support. Romney, no those people who support Romney have sold their souls to the devil, and many of them will support Romney come Hell or high water. Catch Romney with a dead hooker or live boy and they'll still support him.

Really fabulous dialogue tonight between Newt and Cain...refreshing hardly says enough. Finally we get to be in a room with states-men! And the humor both had amongst themselves was delicious!

I would have watched it live, but we just moved, and Mommy and the kids laid claim to the only TV that's hooked up .. LOL

I followed every post on the live thread to get a sense of what was going on, and even from that vantage point, I was very impressed. I feel that it was a stroke of genius to hold a debate between just two candidates, in this format. From what I can tell, it was the best political event of the season, and I hope there are many more.

Kudos to Cain and Gingrich for finally giving the voters some real meat to chew on, and for doing it in such a civil, and statesmanlike way.

Bravo!

It is not strange. I was excited about Perry when he first came out. Then he stumbled and frankly looked not too bright, many times. For a seasoned politician, his answers and manner were puzzling to me. His actions concerning tuition for illegals, the Texas-Mexico corridor, and the mandate for vaccinations were all big turnoffs. He is certainly better policy-wise than Romney or Obama.

The prevailing attitude here is that if you don’t like it here, you should go devleop and host your own website.

You said this forum sucks. I assume you are talking about Free Republic. Was that assumption incorrect or are you just complaining about being disagreed with?

It has to do with the difference between gross sales and net profit. When Cain took over Godfathers, it was bleeding 8 million dollars/year in net losses. After Cain turned it around, it was showing a 2 million dollar/year net profit. One of the things he did was to close about half the stores that were responsible for most of the losses. So, yes, it was the 5th largest in gross sales, and it went to the 11th largest; while going from an 8 million dollar loss to a 2 million dollar profit. (Just as a side note, he managed to close half the stores while cutting staff by only 20%. Quite remarkable, really.) He turned a bloated, dying corporation into a lean mean fighting machine.

I think that type of turnaround talent, when applied to the bloated bleeding carcass of our Federal Government and its many unnecessary departmental bureaucracies, is just what we need if we’re to have any chance of not ending up in the dust heap of history.

And how is he going to “take it to Obama” if he can’t even back out of the driveway? He’s had more than one debate opportunity to show himself to the primary voters. I have serious doubts that he can take it to anyone regardless of whether he wants to or not. It’s not my job to impress them, it’s their job to impress me. I didn’t know anymore about Cain than I did about Perry so they started out on equal footing with me. He’s got to communicate better, seriously. I’m not saying he doesn’t have good ideas or that he hasn’t done wonderful things for TX but if he can’t convince conservatives who already have similar values and ideas for restoring the republic how is he ever going to be able to do that with the general public who are a much harder sell?

Both Newt and Cain acquitted themselves very well tonight. We need one of them to take Mittens out.
