The Wisconsin Department of Justice has received more than 20,000 concealed carry applications since the law took effect Tuesday.
Data from the state Justice Department show that as of 4 p.m. Friday, 20,476 applications had been submitted. Of those, 879 concealed carry licenses had been approved and 793 had been printed.
Also, 117 applications were rejected. Agency spokeswoman Dana Brueck incomplete applicant data, insufficient training documentation or a missing payment are all reasons an application can be rejected.
The state has 45 days to issue a license once a valid application is received.
Brueck said the Justice Department is working to make sure the deadline will be met.
"We have pulled people from various areas within the DOJ to process these applications, and we'll be working through the weekend to do everything in our power to meet the deadlines imposed by the legislature," she said.
The Justice Department has from 30 to 35 people assigned to processing concealed carry applications at any given time, Brueck said.
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen was the first applicant in Wisconsin to receive a permit. On Friday, he issued a statement on the high volume of applications: "I am pleased that tens of thousands of applications have streamed into the Department, and many law-abiding Wisconsin residents already have received licenses."
State officials have said they anticipate that as many as 200,000 applications could be submitted in the first few months.
To receive a concealed carry permit in Wisconsin, applicants must be at least 21, pass a background check and undergo training. Wisconsin becomes the 49th state to allow people to carry concealed weapons; Illinois is the only state without a concealed carry law.
I might be in for a wait!
What are the fees to the state?
People yearning to be free.
$50, of which $13 is to pay for the background check - I don't know what their other costs are for staff, materials, postage, etc. So, $37 (or $50 - $13)) * 20,000 = $740,000.
Not a bad haul for the week.
Yep. Permit #1. What a friggin' jerk. Now he wants to increase the training hours to 8, instead of four. This is outside of the law, but the DOJ feels they can do want they want. Walker needs to put the hammer down on that viper pit of Doyle statists. At least Walker will sign the Castle Doctrine bill. My app went out on day 1. We are in for a long wait.
I wonde rhow the beat up whitey thing will work out at the state fair next year?
Hopefully with some thugs at room temperature.
Boy, if all the states became “shall issue” for concealed firearms, think of all the revenue they would generate.
Regardless, the idea that you need a permit to carry still irks me when the 2nd Amendment says I can do so without one.
Yes, I am guessing it will not be so much fun for thugs if decent people are armed.
CA outta try this. The budget’s a mess.
/delusional thought
Not at the expence of my privacy, and moneys...the 2nd gives me the right to carry concealed, or not...my choice. I don’t yearn; I am free.
Semper Fi, Mac! And an early Happy Birthday to you!
I agree completely with that sentiment, but when you walk into a gun shop, and walk out a few minutes later with your gun(s), it sort of makes you feel a little better about it.

I can buy a pistol in Alaska in a few minutes and carry it concealed right out of the store, without any permit. I feel even better about that.
I would feel that way also. TX is not that free, yet.
