Cain accuser attorney: Client sees 'no value' in revisiting issue

CNN) - Joel Bennett, the attorney for one the women who has accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment, said Friday that his client "made a complaint in good faith about a series of inappropriate behaviors and unwanted advances" from the GOP presidential candidate.

Bennett said his client sees "no value" in revisiting the issue now, but "stands by the complaint that she made."

Bennett said his client would disagree with Cain's characterization of the alleged harassment incidents.

He confirmed that the alleged harassment occurred in 1999 over a period of "at least a month or two." There was "more than one incident," he said.

I happen to KNOW Herman personally, and have known him for years....I have had lunch with him— “ALONE!!!!”

He is a GREAT man— so maybe you have a beef with others who only have Politidump for info

Thanks, eevil. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I enjoyed listening to him on WSB for years. I never heard him say anything off-color. My biggest concern with his candidacy was that something politically provocative said as a talk show host and capture in the digital archives would come back to haunt him if presented as 'normal discourse' instead of provocative back-and-forth with a liberal caller.

You have a personal relationship from which to make a judgment; I don't, and I don't believe the overwhelming number of posters do.

I'll mention this - and I hesitate to do so, because it appears that with any posters, even suggesting that there could possibly be an issue with Cain is akin to writing a 10,000-word post promoting another candidate:

Sometimes, ethics are situational. My understanding is that the incidents that were allegedly inappropriate took place during a three-year period when Cain was regularly living in an apartment rented for him in Washington, D.C. by the National Restaurant Association. My understanding is that his home was still in Atlanta and his wife lived in Atlanta. My understanding is that the staff of the NRA is involved in a significant amount of socializing as part of its role, and that the socializing involves evening activities and alcoholic drinks.

Cain, away from home and socializing in the evening, may have let down his guard in a manner that he hasn't when having lunch with you, or in other social situations with you.

The worse thing here is that Cain has been smeared and he can't control disclosure of the facts to clear his name. It's likely that terms of each settlement agreements require both the woman involved and the NRA to agree to make the terms public. If they don't there's a cloud of mysterious allegations hanging over Cain and he has no way to clear them. If the charges are made public, there will almost certainly be an argument about the facts. After twelve years, 'facts' and memories will be stale.

The trap set by Politico couldn't be more nefarious. If the women and the NRA don't speak, Cain's left with a cloud of "what did he do?" If the women come forward, they'll be nonstop coverage over differences between each woman's charges and Cain's recollection of the events.

And all of us will - justly so - be screaming about the difference in news coverage of sex-related allegations against a conservative and those against a (Larry Sinclar. *cough* *cough*) liberal.

I have no doubt that there was some form of sexual harassment. But it was settled 12 years ago and now has nothing to do with sexual harassment anymore and is just a political hit. Politico has hit him over the head with it 90 times this week. Freepers including myself have every right to be upset about it and if professional journalists can accuse Cain of anything without presenting any facts then I and anybody else can do the same and will.

Just like there are plenty of people who for political reasons would accuse you of touching little boys for calling yourself scoutmaster. It has and does happen but that doesn’t make you guilty does it?

I have no doubt this was an innocuous nuisance lawsuit. The so called victim in this case was CAIN, not the lady who misrepresented the situation and exaggerated and/or lied to get one year’s salary for termination.

If Cain had touched her, had an affair with her, fathered a love child, etc we would already know. If she had any juicy details to share, there would have been a press conference like Paula Jones or Jennifer Flowers did with Clinton.

Those poor democrats and liberal republicans are so out of luck! Hahaha!!!!

That’s why I said “some form” because there is no definition of sexual harassment. It is whatever the woman says it is. Just being the CEO as a man can be considered sexual harassment.

It is been a charge that has been abused by women and the press to the point that 70% of republicans polled think it’s a non-issue.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply...

I don’t care if the man was in a DC apartment for decades...

seriously..I have been in politics for a long time...I have managed campaigns, done talk radio, etc etc...I am always spending time with men-—ALONE...there are some you know might get into trouble...most..if they have the chance...

I grew up a tomboy...in my twenties and thirties was a dangerous flirt....I was actually kinda cute until this past year...gaining weight..ugh!

men are men...

Herman has a one track mind....HIS GOALS...that is it...he can joke and be playful...but he views everyone in a lens of who is giving and who is taking....sometimes he gives, sometimes he takes....he doesn’t waste much time in between...

I completely understand your train of thought, being away from home for a while etc etc...but until you know the guy for 7 years, you are left with your train of thought....

Honestly— I am amazed at how strong his supporters have stayed by his side, without the advantage I have of knowing him....makes me weep...I truly believe God has His hand on him....If I didn’t know him like I do...I would probably be very nervous supporting him after all this inuendo...

I have no doubt that there was some form of sexual harassment.

From what I've read, I think a lot of posters don't agree with you. What I read from Freepers constantly on every thread is that something about what we know makes it perfectly clear as Gospel fact that these were just nuisance suits without any merit.

But it was settled 12 years ago and now has nothing to do with sexual harassment anymore and is just a political hit.

I agree with you completely that this was leaked to Politico as a political hit. An insidious hit, because Cain can't likely can't present the facts without violating the settlement agreement, nor can the NRA, nor the women. This was about as dirty a political hit as political hits come.

However, I'd mildly disagree that it has nothing to do with sexual harassment anymore. If - and I said it - there were multiple instances, then whether they have any bearing on my current decision to support Cain would depend upon what kind of harassment was involved. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said about pornography that he couldn't define it, but he knew it when he saw it. There are some actions and words that are classified as "sexual harassment" to which I said "so"? There are others that, even if twelve years old, I say . . . umm . . . I don't think I'm in your camp any longer.

Politico has hit him over the head with it 90 times this week.

Yes. The people at Politico are (a) scumbuckets and (b) trying to save what little reputation they have by convincing the world they were justified in publishing a story when they didn't have one.

Freepers including myself have every right to be upset about it and if professional journalists can accuse Cain of anything without presenting any facts then I and anybody else can do the same and will.

I though we tried to hold ourselves to a higher standard than (and here I get that look as if I've tasted something disgusting) "journalists." Politico has been the slimebucket. Before these women said a word, they were being called liars and gold-diggers. I thought that as Freepers we should hold ourselves to higher standards than to state such things as facts without any basis.

Just like there are plenty of people who for political reasons would accuse you of touching little boys for calling yourself scoutmaster. It has and does happen but that doesn’t make you guilty does it?

Actually, I don't know that there are plenty of people who would level those charges against me, personally. But innocent people are accused. And guilty people often go years or a lifetime without being accused.

First of all, she and her attorney did not open this can of worms, POLITICO did.

Politico only published the information, but who provided the information to Politico? I could only be the NRA or the woman.
