The day after playing in a Minneapolis concert, Cory Smoot - also known as Flattus Maximus, the guitarist for metal band GWAR - was found dead on the band's tour bus Thursday.
GWAR frontman Dave Brockie released a statement Thursday to Brooklyn, N.Y.-based MetalSucks, an online site featuring posts on heavy metal music.
"Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans," Brockie said, adding that a full statement would be released in "the next day or so."
The band played at First Avenue on Wednesday. They were crossing into Canada on Thursday and were due to perform Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

Our Northern Neighbors most likely.
You hit those softballs pretty well...
Did he join the 27 Club?
“Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing.”
Good thing they didn’t find him *at* the border crossing. I’m sure the RCMP would have been amused.
Don’t know anything about the guy, so RIP.
Minneapolis is a lot closer to the Kanukistanian border than say... Des Moines, IA.
Same group. The lead singer is the one who used to be on Red Eye. I believe he was let go after they did a mock execution of Palin at a concert.
It’s a generational thing, I suppose. Of course I love Metallica (pre-Load), but GWAR brought something to the stage that even a sweaty James Hetfield couldn’t: presence.
Metallica always felt... fake. When I was at their concerts, it was like 4 guys on stage doing 4 different things that happened to sound good. GWAR actually look like they’re having fun on stage if not for the gallons of sweat they pour out under those costumes.
Never really got into Alice Cooper. I know he’s practically the Godfather of hard rock/metal, but I’m not familiar with his catalog.
Oh, God no! Now what the heck will I do for enjoyable music! So clean cut, so inspirational! Why,... I’m totally bereft! Oh the humanity!
Wow, I remember buying my first GWAR album. I always had respect for them because of their humor.
Actually, it was....and I offer Keith Richards as my evidence.
However, if one injects something, it bypasses ALL of the fail-safe mechanisms built into the body's anti-poison self-preservation system....
When overdosing, it's natural that you could die.
Tell that to Keith Richards.
I’m more of a UFO variety Metalist.
OKAY, YOU WIN.........
Actually most members of GWAR are fine, upstanding citizens. They own several art galleries here in Richmond, VA and are very active in the art community.
If an airliner were to crash on the US-CANUK border, which side of the border do you bury the survivors?
(best videos too - don't need to understand a word of German to enjoy them)
I know, they're not for everyone, but if you like heavy metal, you'll LOVE Rammstain
