Last weekend's rare October snow storm produced yet another problem in the state: poor air quality from wood stoves and generators.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Thursday that air quality is expected to be unhealthy for some because of high levels of particle pollution.
The forecast is based on snow pack, light winds and increased use of wood-burning and emergency generators to provide heat. The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of utility customers.
Commissioner Daniel Esty says a brown haze is visible, particularly in valleys.
The elderly, the young and people with asthma may experience health effects such as aggravation of the heart and lung disease.
Weather conditions are expected to help improve air quality by Friday as winds dissipate pollution.
Beats hypothermia.
Agreed. One does have a choice.
Man has been living around wood-burning fires for millennia, but the liberals will try figure out a way to shut down your cozy wood-burning fireplace.
Obviously you don't know anyone with Asthma or COPD. If they are around any irritant they are greatly affected.

Back in the old days, before TV and Snicker’s bars, when one tribe (liberals) started stealing your stuff (liberty), the affected tribe would send in a punitive warrior clan into the village of the (liberal) tribe and beat the snot out of them as a warning to knock it off.

The commissioner must be a young fellow. In the days before the steel mills disappeared and catalytic converters became common, the eastern third to half of the country was under a perpetual brown haze. Earlier yet (60s & before) all the large downtown buildings in the eastern cities were black from coal soot.

I'm from California and it's not just new construction. One of the coolest things about northern California is the cozy fires on cold winter nights but that's also where the leftists greatest concentration is. If we move back, maybe we'll move back to SoCal where it doesn't get cold.
During the winter, it gets quite cold in Southern California. I lived there for 19 years (1974-89 and 1993-97). In December 1978, it snowed in La Crescenta.
Well I think your hugging the hills over there. I’ve talked to residents of Manhattan Beach that have told me they basically never have to use their heater or air conditioner.
LOL! My wife has asthma, and I have COPD. Would you rather freeze? I wouldn’t.
Got power back Thursday, 5 days without a shower.
We have a wood stove, gas stove and a gas grill so other than hot water we made out well.
Drove down town Thursday morning and the first thing I noticed was the haze, never seen it in the twelve years we've lived here.
No breeze at all so it shouldn't come as a surprise with all the smoke coming from the chimneys.
Off note, our dumb ass Governor (based on his statements) wishes he could take over the power company since he thinks they took too long to restore power.
Our legestratere is considering fining them or passing a law on how long it should take to restore power, thank your lucky stars you don't live in Connecticut.
I spent 5 days without power after Irene.
