Cain says Forbes concluded Perry camp was source of harassment leak

Justin Sink

November 3, 2011

Herman Cain said Forbes Magazine - and not his campaign - was responsible for the concluding that Rick Perry's campaign leaked the story of sexual harassment allegations during Cain's tenure as the president of the National Restaurant Association.

"A reporter did this research and came up with these facts, we didn't," Cain said Thursday on Sean Hannity's radio show. "That was the reporter that wrote the report for Forbes."

But despite adamant denials from the Perry camp, Cain said he still doesn't "see any other way this could have come out."

The Forbes article, headlined "Cain Says Perry Camp Behind Sex Harassment Leak," quoted the candidate as saying that he told former staffer Curt Anderson, now a consultant for the Perry campaign, about the allegations. But Cain is not quoted specifically accusing Anderson of being the leak.

The Cain campaign quickly seized on the article Wednesday night, seemingly validating Forbes' reporting that Cain was laying blame at Perry's feet.

"‪Rick Perry needs to apologize to Herman Cain, his family, and America for this despicable story‬," Cain's chief of staff Mark Block said Wednesday on Fox News.

Anderson has denied the accusations, saying in a statement: "I have great respect for Herman and his character and I would never speak ill of him, on the record or off the record."

He also told Fox News that any reporters he had ever spoken to about the Cain allegations were free to openly attribute those comments to him. In doing so, he opened up the door for Politico, who originally reported the allegations, to confirm him as the source. Politico has not done so, effectively eliminating Anderson as the source of the story.

Block said earlier Thursday that he would "accept" the claim by Anderson that he was not behind the story.

"Until we get all the facts, I'm just going to say that we accept what Mr. Anderson has said, and we want to move on with the campaign," Block said on Fox News.

But Cain seemed unconvinced, telling Hannity "there aren't enough breadcrumbs that leads us to any other place."

"I believe a lot of people are connecting the dots for themselves," Cain said. "I don't see any other way this could have come out."

Cain also said he's "almost certain" he told Anderson about the allegations.

"I am almost certain that I did. … This is why we want to get off this merry-go-round," Cain said.

Cain clearly thought there was some there, there, else he never would have told anyone about it in 2003. But, hey, he has an R after his name so I guess it just doesn't matter as long as you are an R and he is an R..... well we've seen this crap forever on the other side and I didn't like it then and I don't like it now... heck Dick Morris said last night on Bill O'Reilly that he told Clinton voters would not hold sex with Jennifer Flowers against him so just take Hillary on 60 minutes and say she forgave you and all will be well...

Sorry, I don't care what party a man is in.... inappropriate is inappropriate...

And I say SO WHAT!!!!! In your world Perry should never hire an accomplished person to work for his campaign who worked for your hero Cain... I disagree, you know the saying: all is fair in love and politics.

Specifically what inappropriate anything has Herman Cain been proven to have committed?

Cite the specific words in my post where I say that! In fact, I'm saying quite the opposite.

Do you simply not read people's posts before responding, or are you just stupid?

I read your post, you think Perry hired Anderson because Anderson worked for Cain and because Cain is so far ahead of him in the polls. Frankly I think that analysis is pretty stupid.

And so where did I say Perry should not hire Anderson because Anderson used to work for Cain?

Oh give me a break, go back and read your posts, I don’t have time to split any more hairs with you, besides you are so desperate to prove Perry and not your hero Cain is the real bad guy here there is no talking to you.

The problem with your definition of “baseless” is that you render the word meaningless.

No not at all. One who makes an accusation based on a lie is making a baseless accusation. One who makes an accusation based on an unprovable truth is NOT making a baseless accusation. They are making an accusation that is simply unprovable.

For example if one alone witnesses a murder, accuses the murderer but can't prove his accusation, his accusation is not baseless. A baseless accusation is one that is based on a falsehood.

For another example, if a bear poops in the woods and only one person sees it, and reports it, then the bear pooping is still fact, and the person reporting it is not making a baseless claim, but only an unprovable claim.

The word "baseless" is not rendered meaningless as you claim. Is can be used when one can prove a false accusation.

It doesn't logically following that just because one tells a campaign aid about a sexual harassment accusation, that it must be true.

But, hey, he has an R after his name so I guess it just doesn't matter as long as you are an R and he is an R.....

What utter nonsense. I make no excuses just because somebody has an R next to their name. I simply disagree with what you are say.

Sorry, I don't care what party a man is in.... inappropriate is inappropriate..

Please don't post this crap to me. There is nothing that I posted that would suggest that I deserve it.

Sheesh.

Meanwhile Block is backing away from the accusation while Herman is still pushing it. Is it really that hard for these guys to stay on the same page? Seriously? This has got to be some of the worst crisis management...

It doesn't instill much confidence, does it?

Just imagine the fog of a real crisis, not one you knew was coming (as Cain admitted on Laura Ingraham's radio show) ...

And why is he so intent on blaming it on Perry? It doesn’t make sense.

It's the breadcrumbs! Don't you know your fairy tales?

the left despises black conservatives

and the rinos do not want a conservative for president.

reagan got shot.

One thing is not like the others.

Are you suggesting that Hinckley was somehow working for either the left or the rinos?

It bothers me, too.

I genuinely like Cain, for many reasons. I think he’s an honest man, and a true conservative patriot.

However, this gives me some pause about his ability to handle a crisis.

Then I say “well, he handled plenty of crises in business” so maybe he’ll do fine.

I think the real weakness is handling the media onslaught correctly.

Yep - That is Cain the “leading” GOP candidate for you. Sadly, people (many of them) still want to vote for him.

Amen. I don’t ever remember the Candidate himself/herself keep talking about the issue and so blatantly accuse others for the woes.
