Alec Baldwin's Twitter war with Dean Skelos backfires! Rant may help GOP, charge critics

Actor Alec Baldwin has launched a war of tweets with Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos

Baldwin's bombastic twitter attacks on Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos has given the Republicans a perfect foil to use to solicit campaign funds--a liberal Hollywood elite actor who wants to raise taxes.

"Don't think we haven't thought of that," a Senate GOP source said when asked if Baldwin will be the focus of a fund-raising effort.

Even Democrats were scratching their heads over why Baldwin took a one-day story and kept it going.

"What Alec Baldwin is doing is making Dean Skelos a man of the people and taking the Republican negatives away," said veteran Democratic operative Hank Sheinkopf.

It's a message perfectly tailored for the GOP base, Sheinkopf said.

"You always want to be attacked by someone rich and powerful so you can look like you're standing up for the little guy and that's what Baldwin's making happen," he said.

The spitting match started Tuesday when Skelos invoked Baldwin's name on a radio show when discussing his continued opposition to imposing a millionaires tax.

"We can't be influenced by the Alec Baldwins of the world that are just buying a $17 million condo in Greenwich Village," Skelos said.

Baldwin shot back in the Daily News, questioning Skelos' financial acumen.

Yesterday morning, the "30 Rock" star who plays a conservative Republican on the critically-acclaimed show, went nuclear on Skelos with a barrage of twitter messages.

One Democratic source called the spat a tempest that will quickly blow over and be forgotten.

"For our purposes, the millionaires tax is pretty popular, so I can't see it hurting," the source said.

But with Senate Democrats deep in debt, the Republicans will take any opportunity to further bury them money-wise.

Veteran GOP consultant Ed Rollins said it is not far-fetched to believe that Baldwin's comments could generate national money.

A former consultant to presidential wannabe Michele Bachmann, Rollins said one of the most effective fund-raising days the campaign had was right after Whoopi Goldberg publicly attacked the Minnesota congresswoman.

The Senate GOP could follow a similar plan--even if Skelos is a state senator barely known outside his district.

"Baldwin's a national figure," Rollins said. "They can get a Conservative list, send out a mail piece or Internet mail saying, help us fight the Hollywood liberals.'"

"The more outrageous Baldwin is, the better it is (for Republicans) from the point of view of raising money."

I have never even heard of Dean Skelos. Seriously, first time I’ve heard his name.

Baldwin is one of those celebrity screwballs that I give a pass to, because he is so talented at what he does. No, he doesn't write his own stuff, but his timing and presentation make him one of the funniest men in Hollywood. Anyone who embraces a political cause because Alec Baldwin supported it probably wasn't intelligent enough to figure out what people like you and me were saying in the first place. If his mouth is actually helping conservatives, so much the better.

I agree with you. Arek is a very funny guy. He's just an airhead when it comes to politics. Come to think of it, maybe that's why he's so good at comedy.

He comes across as a very believable self-obsessed imbecile, probably because he's usually just being himself. Coincidently, liberals (who are alergic to ever actually listening to anything coming out of a conservative's mouth) like to believe these are defining traits for conservatives. That's why the first word they use to describe a conservative, from Reagan to Bush and from Clarence Thomas to Hermain Cain is some variation of stupid. A minority of perceptive conservatives actually think Bill Clinton or Barak Obama are dumb. Nancy Pelosi or Joe Biden on the other hand...

I have it the other way around. Pelosi knew what she was doing and evil..but not in an idiotic way. Obama, is NOT smart and unable to talk coherently without his teleprompter. I still have not seen his college transcripts..

On another note,I just had a conversation with a USC alumni here in Hollywood. His sister used to be a classmate of OJ Simpson, and from what he told us, OJ could not even write a term paper coherently and had so many spelling mistakes he had 20 tutors QUIT by the time he went to the NFL.

Nothing new. Democrats even tried to persuade people Ike was a dummy, despite the fact of his success as Supreme Allied Commander and that he was President of Columbia University. It’s the first item in their playbook of dealing with Republican candidates.

Not I HUGE Palin fan here (I like her, I just prefer about 50 other conservatives for president before her), but it cracks me up when I discuss her with liberals here in NYC. Most of them have clearly seen more of Tina Fey impersonating the woman than the woman herself. All of them think Palin actually said “I can see Russia from my house,” and most of them aren't aware that “You betcha” is something people say in Minnesota, not Alaska. Few of my liberal friends have ever really watched Fox news, but they hate it with a passion, know that it is full of lies and ignorant people. None of them will watch more than a couple of minutes of next year's Republican convention, but they will cast their votes convinced that they are among the smartest and most informed members of the electorate.

He deserved an Oscar for this performance. I don’t mind him as an actor, and yes he is terribly funny; he’s just such a DICK in real life.
