From todays briefing:
MR. CARNEY: Well, I believe the phrase from the Bible* is, The Lord helps those who help themselves. And I think the point the President is making is that we should -- we have it within our capacity to do the things to help the American people.
The White House adds in the official transcript:
* This common phrase does not appear in the Bible.
The King James Version (published 1611) and Shakespeare (active 1592-1610) were contemporary, so it’s quite natural they should sound similar.
IMHO, the Lord helps those who can’t help themselves.
“so its quite natural they should sound similar.”
Definitely, they have a similar syntax/grammar/pronunciation thing.
Obviously, though, their content is usually quite different. It is funny when intellectual elites start quoting Shakespeare as if it is the Bible.
“They will do these things to you because they haven’t known the Father or me.” John 16:3
Al Gore’s favorite Bible verse. I think he meant 3:16 but who knows?
Well, was it in the Bible , “Early to bed and early to rise, and your girl goes out with other guys?”
Obama’s favorite scripture that he often quotes is “I am my brother’s keeper”.
While technically in the Bible, it’s not exactly Biblical. It was a phrase used by a guy who was trying to weasel out of a murder rap. Nowhere in Christian doctrine appears the idea that we are to be anybody’s “keeper”.
But I’m sure Obama can accurately quote the Koran.
What book is “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition” in?
Why would the WH be using a quote like that? Their supporters will run away screaming if someone suggests they “help themselves.”
Maybe a few words got lost between when Carney said it and it got posted to FR. If the original quote was “help themselves to other people’s money” then I can believe Carney said it.
"Lord, what fools these mortals be!" lol
My recollection is that was in the Book of Joe.
G.I. Joe, that is.
The same one that has “God only knows what I’d be without you.”
If he’s looking to spout bible verses, maybe he should first take a look at Proverbs 17:28.
I don’t understand how he thought this quote would support Obama’s agenda. What a dum bass.
Maybe it was from the Wholey Koran.
Mr. Roper: As the good book says; ‘To thine own self be true’.
Jack Tripper: That was Shakespeare’s play!
Mr. Roper: That was a good book!
Maybe he got confused with:
Smash a window , then help yourself............
Yes, seeing that the King James Version was written right after the Shakespeare era........
You mean the one he reads when he’s not blinking his eyes like a butterfly on meth?...........
Is that right in between the books of Amos and Andy?.........
