Rick Perry, in person and before TV cameras giving his standard stump speech, is a highly attractive candidate. But time and time again, he has managed to damage his persona in these circular firing squads that the “debates” have become. That was almost a punch-out between Romney and Perry concerning the question of illegal immigrants, and how each of the governors had treated the situation as it came up. And the Gardisil controversy was blown WAY out of proportion.

Romney tries to be too polished, too smooth, and seems not to recognize the concerns that drive the T.E.A. party people. Perry appears to be willing to listen and incorporate these concerns in his campaign.

But it may be all for naught, as a “Herman-Cain” blows into town.

First he has to sober up.

Then actually become the fictional tea party Jesse Helms figure that he pretends to be.

Avoid giving more speeches like the one he gave last night in New Hampshire.

I have to disagree a bit. Governor Perry has managed to hurt himself as badly outside the debates as in them. I cannot see how he can overcome himself. It is, perhaps, doable. If you look at the polls in relation to the number of weeks prior to the first primary from 2007, he has followed in the footsteps of Fred Thompson.

He's damaged himself as much just speaking to the media - the birther stuff, the confederate license plates, etc., and his campaign playing games about the debate.
