Moments before making his Republican presidential candidacy official in Charleston last July, Texas Gov. Rick Perry turned to me and said, "This is gonna be a fun ride!"
Maybe not.
In the ensuing 110 days, Perry has gone from explosive front-runner to second-tier candidate well down in the single digits with Michele Bachmann and beneath fellow Texan Ron Paul, of all people.
He raised more money than Mitt Romney last quarter. But now, with only 64 days left before the opening contest in Iowa's caucuses, what's the nation's longest-serving governor need to do to catch up?
That was the principal question this weekend in Perry's Sunday show debut. Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace wanted to know Perry's most important lesson so far. Perry's reply:
"Well, the thing that I've learned is that you pace yourself. It's not a sprint. It's a marathon and we got in late, and we worked awfully hard for those first eight-plus weeks to go raise the money and we had a $17 plus million for 40-day fundraising push."
Then, Wallace gave the veteran undefeated pol a golden opportunity to predict victory, asking him how confident he was that he could claw his way from a 7% Iowa poll standing to the upper 20s or 30% level it'll take to capture Iowa on that chilled night in early January.
But the former Democrat wasn't biting. "Well, I'm confident that we're going to be out there competing. I mean, obviously, we've got a war chest that allows us to get that message out there. We got a great team put together across the country. We've got not just people in -- on the ground but we've got great volunteers.

Drop out and endorse Herman Cain !
bingo.....another RIGHT answer!!!
My thought exactly.
Send in his relief pitcher-—wife Anita!
You need to re-post this to smoothsailing
Rick Perry, in person and before TV cameras giving his standard stump speech, is a highly attractive candidate. But time and time again, he has managed to damage his persona in these circular firing squads that the “debates” have become. That was almost a punch-out between Romney and Perry concerning the question of illegal immigrants, and how each of the governors had treated the situation as it came up. And the Gardisil controversy was blown WAY out of proportion.
Romney tries to be too polished, too smooth, and seems not to recognize the concerns that drive the T.E.A. party people. Perry appears to be willing to listen and incorporate these concerns in his campaign.
But it may be all for naught, as a “Herman-Cain” blows into town.
First he has to sober up.
Then actually become the fictional tea party Jesse Helms figure that he pretends to be.
Avoid giving more speeches like the one he gave last night in New Hampshire.
Maybe him and Herm can go try to pick up some chicks...loosen him up a little bit...
Then I guess they can both go on the down-low...
I have to disagree a bit. Governor Perry has managed to hurt himself as badly outside the debates as in them. I cannot see how he can overcome himself. It is, perhaps, doable. If you look at the polls in relation to the number of weeks prior to the first primary from 2007, he has followed in the footsteps of Fred Thompson.
Well, there’s always barber college.
Santorum will be gone after Iowa, maybe his two supporters will switch to Cain.
