Cain: “I was falsely accused” of sexual harassment at trade group (Watch FOX News VIDEO)
Hotair ^ | 10/31/2011 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 10/31/2011 9:48:36 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Herman Cain acted swiftly to put an end to speculation over the story about sexual-harassment claims during his tenure at the National Restaurant Association. After a few hours of confused response, Cain admitted that he had been accused, but falsely, of inappropriate conduct. He claimed that an investigation of those accusations showed at the time that they were “baseless,” and he seemed surprised by the news that the trade group settled the claims. “I hope it wasn’t for much,” Cain told Fox News, “because nothing happened”:

“I have never sexually harassed anyone, but yes, I was falsely accused while I was at the National Restaurant Association,” he said.

He added that he does not know that a settlement was paid out against the two complainants, and said “If more allegations come, I assure you that people will simply make them up.”

“The only other allegations will be trumped up allegations,” he said.

This is a much better response than the one offered last night in response to the Politico story. It acknowledges that Cain had to deal with accusations, and puts him on the record with a strong denial specific to them. Unless Politico reveals more about the nature of the complaints and the women involved come forward, this will likely be enough to keep Cain in the game, as it’s doubtful that voters will give much credence to the vague nature of the allegations — unless they get a lot less vague, and unless more people come forward with complaints, assuming they can credibly do so.

Fox also asked about a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about possible campaign finance irregularities. I’ll have more on that later, but that hits Cain’s staff rather than Cain himself.

It’s both alarming and sad. From everything that I have seen of Cain, he is a strong, conservative, and admirable man. We are so fortunate to have him as a candidate, and I hope that we are soon able to find who is at the bottom of these attacks.

No, Cain has now officially stated he was falsely accused. He knew it all along.

Clarence Thomas was in a he said she said situation that was pure bs.

Cain was accused, it appears the accusers settled.

Cain said he didn't do it.

According to Newsmax Cain had told a staffer this might come up.

Whether this hurts Cain's campaign or not it had better come out now rather than like GWB's DWI did.

You and I are on the same page here. We're looking at this from a political point of view and I wish more freepers would leave their emotions at the door and do the same.

I was actually disappointed in Rush's take on this. It was over the top. This is not a lynching, this is a real thing that needs to be squashed now. Not Oct.31st 2012.

Frankly with bullshit like this, who really wants to run for President anymore?

No, what should be raising eyebrows is that this was raked up by the creep who camped out next door to spy on Palin and her children. More eyebrow raising at the timing it hit the wires when Cain out polled Perry in Texas. And the big double eyebrow raise coinky-dink is that Cain is a real black man, who is a real conservative, who really speaks his mind, who is the real deal and who has a real chance of taking this thing away from the boy won-der.

There is no evidence there are more than two, so I certainly wasn’t thinking about “dozens”. That is quite a leap.

I answered this in another thread; short summary is that since Cain says he had no idea there was a settlement, there’s no way he could be bound by a gag order — he’d have to sign the settlement to be bound by it, and if he signed it, he couldn’t say he had no idea it existed.

If what you say is true, then it seems that one of the possibilities apply:

1) Cain forgot all about it.

2) Cain remembers the settlement but lied regading his not knowing about it.

RE: The Settlement.

Let’s assume that one exists...

1) Did Cain sign it?

If he did, then the following possibilities apply:

A) He really DID harrass the women

In which case, the next question becomes, what was
the NATURE of the harrassment?

B) He did not harrass the women, but decided to settle to prevent any ugly publicity.

2) If he did not, who signed it on behalf of the NRA ( National Restaurant Association)?

B) He did not harrass the women, but decided to settle to prevent any ugly publicity.

Wrong B) above. B) He did not harrass the women, but the corporation decided to "settle" because that's what the corporation's attorneys recommended because it was cheaper for the company than dragging things out and the women were A-okay with a cash settlement just to shut up and go away.

If so, did they void the conditions of the settlement by revealing this to the Politico and are they now liable for repaying, with interest, the full amounts of the settlement?

Conservatives have standards. Liberals don’t.

But I think the public is more forgiving than the media. They simply don’t care. The GOP Senator from LA was accused of consorting with a prostitute, people dismissed it and he got re-elected.

The bottom line is politics bears a close resemblance to the world’s oldest profession.

People are not expecting a saint. And unless Cain has a prostitute tucked away somewhere, like Client No. 9 did, it won’t be enough to get him disgraced.

Or, as I said, he didn’t sign it.

I would discount your “1”, because this wasn’t some random question out of the blue, where he might have forgotten in the heat of the moment. They knew there was a story about this, and any competent campaign would have at least discussed it, and if they were discussing a story about settlements, Cain would have remembered he signed a settlement.

If he DID forget about it under that circumstance, that would be a really bad thing for a person of his age to admit. For now, I choose to believe he did NOT know about the settlement, and therefore was not a party to it, and is therefore not bound by any gag order.

That wasn’t a full time job for Cain. As I mentioned once the insurance company takes over, the insured is out of the picture. That happened to a large water district board locally. They were sued by the family of a teenager who died when the canoe she was in went over a district dam during a flood.

The water board was completely out of the picture to their amazement. The board wanted to fight the lawsuit given the teacher paddling was drunk and the dam was well marked. The board was irrelevant to the process. They had no part in it or the settlement.

Other than the fact the lawsuit went away, they were told nothing else.

Would it be an oddity, or would it be the norm

Could be one or the other depending on the circumstances. But since this was classic crap being slung against a wall in hopes some will stick, I'd just as soon avoid getting my shoes dirty and smelly from stepping in the residue and focus on who was responsible for digging up this dirt and feeding it to the media....

But then again, infighting seems to be the popular sport here during election season . If only the Democrats could follow our lead...........

Hey Politico and other Obama hit media:

Barack Obama's law license was voluntarily retired. Michelle Obama's law license was voluntarily placed inactive. Why?
